The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword is a very divisive game. Some people love it, and some people love to hate it, but now that it's been several years let's take a closer look at Skyward Sword and see how it stacks up.

Well, it's like this this, the cartoony kind of particular art style will hold up now and forever, same as BOTW and wind waker HD and all they had to do was up the resolution and it looks stunning even today, but the "photorealistic" games won't hold up in ten or twenty years as graphics get better, and they'll look dogshit in comparison.
@Odinsday

Matthew Mclean I played Twilight Princess recently and even considering the graphical style they used, the game looks really fucking good (HD version). Granted, it is an enhanced port but, it still managed to age fairly well which can’t be said for most games of that time. The detail in that game is pretty fucking impressive.
@donnylurch4207

@@meeshellart8877 I remember when this game released, some critics knocked it for the low resolution and some pretty crappy textures in places, lamenting that this couldn't be on an HD console. It could definitely benefit from a remake, and the Joycons might be sophisticated enough to mimic and even improve on the motion control scheme.

What's funny to me is people always complain that Botw is lacking in the story department, but this is probably due to people criticizing Skyward Sword to hell for its heavy story focus. Breath is nearly the polar opposite of SS due to this, and the people are complaining about what they asked for. That isn't to say criticism is bad, it's a great thing when done constructively like this video, but Nintendo is likely getting really mixed messages from us and instead of just telling them the game is fucking shit we should help them improve it.
@aletanook
@aletanook 5 лет назад
I think BOTW should've just removed that story entirely, even if it was lacking, its story was still melodramatic as hell and expanding it would probably make the game horrible. It's better for not having much of a story focus but still just mediocre because of how melodramatic the story was.

Skyward Sword is one of my favourite Zelda games but is literally the definition of slow and repetitive pacing. I'd like to mention, i love how they managed to implement directly Fi in Breath of the Wild (you can hear her in the Master Sword, twice), connecting these two games with only a sound, it just makes both games so much better.

Skyward Sword was the first Zelda I played all the way through. I loved every second of it the first time I played it back in 2012. After that, I was hooked on the franchise and have played basically every 3D Zelda since, with Ocarina of Time 3D being my favorite. Skyward Sword has a very special place in my heart. I considered it my favorite for a long time. I went back and finally replayed Skyward Sword on the Hero Mode I had never even touched just last year. And wow, has my opinion changed drastically. It's not nearly as amazing as I remembered it being. It's 70 hours long and a lot of that is due to padding. Fi consistently breaks any immersion the player could have. The backtracking gets pretty tedious when doing things for a third time. And the Imprisoned doesn't change its tactics enough to warrant fighting three times. Twice, I can see. But not three times. With that being said though, I loved the game so much because it was so helpful to me when I first played it. I loved how it taught me what to look for in a Zelda puzzle, how dungeons are usually laid out, and presented that with an amazing story with A+ characters. This was the Zelda that eased me in to the franchise where others turned me off, and I really appreciate that about it. Skyward Sword is a mixed bag. It has some of my favorite areas to explore. I LOVE that roller coaster section of the desert, and the sand sea that interacts with the time stone, and the Pirate Ship that utilizes the time gimmick. On top of that, it has the best story, and the best supporting cast to boot. But unfortunately, it takes a lot out of me to sit down and play it when a lot of my time is spent rushing through Fi's dialogue, and then getting frustrated because she interrupted what I was doing. With all that being said, I still love Skyward Sword. The pros vastly outweigh the cons to me, but the cons could be so easily fixed that it leaves me flummoxed.

BotW is almost like the antithesis of Skyward Sword. SS has great music, villains, story, and characters, but suffers from excessive landholding, linearity, padding and an empty world. BotW on the other hand is jam packed full of things to do, does not hold your hand to the slightest degree, and is open world, but has a pretty bare-bones story, boring villains (mostly) music that isn't bad, but not nearly as memorable as SS.
@mrwho995
@mrwho995 5 лет назад
Yeah, as you say they're pretty much the opposite of one another. I dont agree on SS having an empty world: I love the world design below the sky even though I wish it was connected up: they feel like massive, open dungeons and have a lot more design put into them than BoTW which has tons of open space with nothing but a few korok seeds to find and a shrine in the far distance. I love both games for basically opposite reasons.
@TheJuzy
@TheJuzy 5 лет назад
I nearly 100% BotW and i can say that alot of regions in the world is totally underused, particularly the south region and south east (faron). Hebra mountains was a pretty empty place as well. And to be honest alot of things just felt like a grind in the game like hunting and killing lynels to get good weapons, just to have them break at the same pace that you collect them... And when you finally get some good weapons, the enemies in the world just gets stronger (changes to the weird white tiger skin) and the weapons you gathered are now null.

This is still my favourite Zelda game, regardless of the gripes people have with it. Its storytelling, world building, music, characters and enemies are a cut above the other games, in my humble opinion. I’ve never felt so invested in an area such as Skyloft (so I have to disagree with what you said) and I constantly find myself coming back to it, which is something I can’t say for a few other Zelda games (cough Twilight Princess)

DustyO'Rusty I dunno if I’d agree it was better than Ocarina of Time’s, but it certainly was more expansive. It was emptier too, which was a big issue, but then you could call me hypocritical because the Sky is pretty damn empty too haha. I think the Loftwing flying just felt more engaging to me than riding Epona. Both have incredible themes though.
@Odinsday
@Odinsday 6 лет назад
Jakfrost25 Don’t get me wrong, I think Skyloft is a cool place. Hell, flying around is also decently fun. But, I just don’t get a sense of epicness doing these things in Skyward. Twilight Princess just feels so much more..... grand. The world feels big and yes that can be tedious at times but I actually don’t mind it that much. I like riding Epona and slicing up bokoblins while on horse back. Although, if you don’t like traveling in long distances from place to place, you have Midna for teleportation.
@jakfrost25
@jakfrost25 5 лет назад
DustyO'Rusty That’s fair, and Twilight Princess does have the option to teleport that Skyward Sword doesn’t. I think part of it may be down to the art style as well; SS is like a swirling watercolour you’re flying through which, with the sound of the wind and your Loftwing, invested me in the world.

The story, characters and music really made Skyward Sword one of my favorite games but I do admit there is some issues with pacing of the plot. However I really enjoyed the Eldin volcano eruption because that was completely unexpected. It's frustrating true but you have a real challenge and it's so satisfying to reclaim everything and then dominate the battlefield!

I've loved most of the Zelda games, but Skyward Sword is probably the one I love most. None of the complaints mentioned in this video seem relevant. Certainly not the pacing - I love the fact that the big sky island is my home, and I can amble around on it as I please. It's like the Shire scenes in The Lord of the Rings. I've played it all the way through twice, and hope it comes out on HD soon. I do like the idea of the land locations being connected once you've played them, but my enjoyment doesn't depend on this.

Didn't even mention the stamina system... Which everyone loves in BotW, and was introduced by SS. Or how the sailcloth was the reason there's a glider. People don't give this game enough credit for what it's done for Breath. Zelda in BotW is far closer to the SS model than say, TP, though I do love my stoic serious princess. I largely think Link was given more character as well based on the model for him SS put forth. While WW and TP Link do have some expression, none of them seem quite as human as SS Link, and I think BotW took from his playbook pretty extensively. Also I don't quite agree with your "going back to the same area and it doesn't change!!!" bit because... You get a new area? Just a smaller offshoot of an existing one, but it's entirely new with an entirely new dungeon each. What you wanted was 6 unique areas, when you could clearly see on the map that you weren't going to get it. I actually thought they did a good job of hinting at you visiting those areas in future with the closed gate in faron or the cliffs in lanayru or the firey cave in eldin. I do agree with the idea that it should have been bigger, even perhaps interconnected as in TP or OoT, but I don't think you can say truthfully that there was nothing new. But I am guilty of consistently defending this game, so, call me biased.

Replaying Skyward Sword, it is interesting how many mechanics set up the ones that existed in BotW. Stamina meter was one, but small collectibles that were used for upgrading equipment is another. SS was a good game; I just think it was panned because of the controls, lack of exploration, and the fact that it didn't really bring anything new. I tend to agree, BUT story-wise this is the best Zelda game yet. Not only was it interesting to get a prequel to the entire Zelda series, but it was amazingly well written and tugged on your heartstrings heard. Zelda's and Link's relationship was adorable, and Fi saying goodbye at the end had me in tears.
@aletanook
@aletanook 5 лет назад
Zelda and Link's relationship sucked and should've been reduced to a very minor portion of the game like they did with Ilia and Marin and only have like 3 scenes of how they interact and that's it. Link shouldn't have shown affection like holding hands and stop getting a big dopey smile everytime he hears her name or is around her. But still, SS Zelda sucked, she needs to be like Marin and stop teasing link all the time like a bitch and pushing him off heights like a brat.

It's worth noting, while Skyward Sword's opening is dull, Twilight Princess is still the worst start to any Zelda game. TP teaches you how to play as Link and then immediately thrusts you into a new tutorial for Wolf Link, all without letting you out of the opening village/sewers. The game doesn't really start until after you meet Zelda.

Knucks Open world games are such a gimmick, i would rather play 10 unique dungeons than 100 of the same shrines. This is the problem with open world it makes it seem like theres alot to do but in reality you’re just doing a repeat of the same shit. open world was cool when skyrim did it, but it’s no longer a fad. alot People like linear games. and i honestly think BOTW is overrated. I still thought it was fantastic though, don’t get me wrong it did a lot of things right that most open worlds haven’t done. It was really cool being able to go literally anywhere on the entire map. That in of itself is a gaming milestone.

BotW is the only Zelda game I haven't completed. Mainly because it's on Switch, but also because it doesn't catch my interest. I'm pretty sure that I would rank the 3D Zelda games like this: 1. Majora's Mask 2. Wind Waker 3. Skyward Sword 4. Twilight Princess 5/6. OoT and BotW (can't choose which I liked less)

I just want to say that I am SO happy that you didn't mention the word "linear" in this review at all. The reality is, all of Skyward Sword's actual problems could have transferred over to BotW in spite of its open world. Thankfully, Nintendo didn't just make "Skyward Sword but open world" but addressed nearly all of its actual issues.
@aliastheabnormal
@aliastheabnormal 6 лет назад
Fun fact, a problem with Skyward Sword was the Wii itself. It was simply too underpowered. The developers wanted to create a connected overworld but the Wii couldn't handle the strain of a connected world so they separated the overworld and created the sky because the console couldn't handle the game they were making.
@Odinsday
@Odinsday 6 лет назад
aliastheabnormal Really? Damn, no wonder the game feels so disconnected. They at least got it right with BotW.
@aliastheabnormal
@aliastheabnormal 6 лет назад
DustyO'Rusty Aonuma actually admitted during development of BotW, Even if he didn't name games that the GameCube and Wii didn't have what it takes to handle the Zelda games Nintendo was making. And that it was only until the WiiU and Switch that the developers had a console that was powerful enough or in the Wii's case. Intentionally gimped by Nintendo to handle a world the size of BotW.
@Odinsday
@Odinsday 6 лет назад
aliastheabnormal I had a feeling. Skyward Sword’s world felt incomplete. It didn’t flow well together which shocked me because Nintendo is usually really good at making overworlds. Even boring ones like Hyrule field from Ocarina had some consistency. At least Skyloft is nice. Also the similar art styles kind of set me off, tho BotW is far more anime and cel shaded based. Skyward Sword feels like Twilight Princess and Wind Waker smashed together which makes the game look really pretty but I kind of still prefer the Twilight Princess art style, especially for characters like Link. Hell, the shield mechanics paved the way for the weapon durability for BotW. Still, I think Skyward Sword came out really good despite a lot of issues it has. It’s not in my top 5 but to say it’s a bad game is hilariously false.

Ghirahim is like kinda Zant from TP in a way. In the beginning of both games, you think that they are the main villains. They both have a great lust for power and might, but as soon things don't turn out the way Zant wants, he shows his true nature and the player sees that he is childish, selfish and... kinda weird too. But Ghirahim is way more mature than Zant, he is loyal to Demise no matter what (Ghirahim was also weird).

I liked it a lot better than Twilight Princess, and these are my two least favorite entries in the series. I mean, TP has the most excruciating tutorial section I've experienced in a Zelda game and it fails to make your care about anybody from Ordon, which shouldn't have been hard. The only thing TP does better than SS is the dungeons, which are the game's only good quality.

Dungeons that held your hand. Yuck! WW had better dungeon designs and allowed two players! Sort of. With the Song of Command. WW had realistic faces. Just like you this game caters to those with emotions but not an OUNCE of logic in them. There's a reason the media and entertainment is considered toxic now and it's true. The Bush era had the most choices despite the lack of streaming (which we never needed)

Fi (Fay as I pronounce her or fee mainly Fay) is actually the thing that got me interested in the master sword. Or to be honest it's middle stage the goddess white sword. She opened up several possibilities for weapons in general. Having each weapon have it's own spiritual being inside of it made me consider my sword named the sword of loyalty to possibly have a spirit in it as well AND THEY BRING THIS UP AGAIN LATER IN THE TIME LINE!!! To be exact I'm talking about breath of the wild when Link is severely injured we see the master sword give off a faint ghostly yet familiar glow.

I noticed some people asking for a HD release (I don't understand you guys) and now I'm asking myself: How would they adapt the game to the switch? 1- For the aim, would be better they try to replicate the pointer with the motion of the JoyCons? Or would it be better to use aim method used on BotW? 2- For the sword play, they should use the same method but with the refined motion controls of the JoyCon? Or they should try another Method? (And no, I doubt they would use buttons)
