Don't understand why people think this is about sex. Its like they hear the line "could never tell you what happened when I turned 17" and ignore everything else in the song
i think of it as her being raped, or abused of some sort. "the rise of a king and the fall of a queen." the rise of her abuser's ego and self importance, and the shattering of her innocence, the fall of her self image and esteem. it goes with the rest of the song too imo, her singing about how the guy that wants to control her should fuck off. she doesnt want to deal with that shit all over again. this is just me listening to the song though, i dont know anything about marinas backstory lol
I’ve been singing this song since I was twelve but it was especially good when I was finally seventeen. By the way, this song is about her parents divorce.

I was heartbroken and bawled my eyes out as I chewed the gum he sent me along with a few other sentimental items with a hand-written letter, a few months before. Just as well as *"You didn't have to CUUUUUUUUT ME OOOOOOOFF!!!~"* from Gotye - Somebody That I Used To Know, associated with that experience as well. 😀 Still can't say I don't absolutely love these songs. We've reunited and are together again, for good this time.
her parents get divorced when she was 4 yo, and her dad moved back to greece, she was staying with her mom and raised by her family, then when she was 17 she moved to her father (I don’t know all details) and this song is about him and their relationship, how he though she was raised without good manners and probably thinking he would raised her better and is embarrassed of her, but he wasn’t with her when she was a kid and he know nothing about her family from her mother side as she sings that he don’t know shit about her family that raised her. At the end she also sing that she never felt like princess and she used to get in distress which is somethig a lot of kid from diverced parents do - get in trouble to fight for atention especially from the parent that left them

Then I found out they were written about her record company. Bit deflating. But true artists' words go beyond the everyday. That's why Marina's songs are so relatable - no matter what they are 'about', they reach the depths of our emotions and help us understand ourselves, find our way through our problems and express our hurt and joy. That's why she means so much to me anyway. I am expressing this so badly, you can tell I am not an artist : (
