So my friend and I watched the musical together and then read a Ryan Mccarten interview and he says "yeah, my character goes out with a bang" and we were so happy with his punnery
Yeah, there was an interview consisting of Jessica, Elle, and Alice and Jessica said that there was going to be a "bluesy, ballsy, type number" and I thought that was clever as well
Ireallyneedhelpnaopls No you're right I don't think they were friends in the movie. When Heather C. is telling her to forge the note, Veronica says that she has nothing against Martha, and Heather C. replys that she doesn't have anything for her either.
+Lord Death Yeah, in the movie, Veronica was childhood friends with another character but hadn't talked to her in a while (from what I understand) and then she got involved with the Heathers which made their struggling friendship even more difficult. Neither Martha or the childhood friend (who's name I've forgotten) were very fleshed out in the movie and normally combining characters is a terrible idea and gets a lot of people mad, but this was probably one of the things they did best in Heathers: The Musical and they made Martha's suicide attempt much harder to take in.
Can I just point out how dark this song is? These kids were close to unknowingly being wrapped by death's chilly hands, and now they're singing about how they can be 17 forever. Sp00ky????
@@macymoo5337 Except it is. Veronica wanted to grow up so much at the beginning. But now she realized that childhood is precious, and she and everyone else in her school almost got the last bits of it cut short. She wanted them to stay 17 forever. At least, as long as possible. Because who knows when someone is about to blow up your school because he became obsessed with a girl that loved him after she joined the popular group?
I just noticed something. When Heathers (the movie) came out it made one million dollars at the box office, its budget was two million. However, it became a cult classic and really popular. The same thing with the musical, it closed down because not many people were watching it. However, now, so many people are watching this. I find this funny because in both the musical and show characters like Kurt and Ram but mainly Heather Chandler made a massive impact once they were dead. Heather even became more popular after her suicide. I find it weird that it mirrors each other. I just felt like pointing that out idk why
Ella Check out 21 Chump Street. It was made by Lin-Manuel Miranda, the creator of Hamilton. It's only 14 minutes long but it's a great story of decievery, love, and weed.
I still like to think that after their high school experience Martha, Veronica and Heather McNamara go out shopping every Saturday, the ghost of J.D following Veronica around silently admiring her, Kurt sticking around with Heather, and Ram realizing after death he had Martha, he had someone who loved him. The three of them being a close friend group, Veronica going to her dream college, Martha becoming a successful movie director and Heather creating her own fashion line (unique clothes that stand out in a crowd instead of blending in) It's a lovely fantasy
I just saw a production of this show where they changed the ending where the school wasn't saved and everyone actually did die. This song took on a whole different meaning with that ending, because the entire cast came out and sang this song.
....Why the f would they do that?! Then again I think I asked that same question when I heard a rumour that our production of Footloose was gonna be set in space or something.
Why do I always want to cry when Heather McNamara quickly leaves Heather Duke for Veronica. It just feels like a huge step in her life and it's all done without any dialogue on her part. I also like how Heather Duke waves back to that girl without being mean to her. This song has character development and there is no dialogue whatsoever and I just can't. This is one of the best musicals ever change my mind.
I love this ending so, so much! And for those of you who don't know, it's even more beautiful (no pun intended) when Veronica extends a hand to Heather McNamara and she takes it!!!!
God, it’s the best. Some think the ending is too happy compared to the movie but I really like it and don’t think it takes away the complexity of the message at all. It’s sweet and a great way to tie up the show’s message. Also someone hug Heather McNamara please she needs it lol
I got the amazing opportunity to see it for Ryan McArtan's (JD) last performance back in June. We got 1/2 priced tickets the day of the show and got 3rd row seats, and we got to meet the entire cast. It was absolutely life changing.
And this is why I admire this musical so much. The story starts out with Veronica saying, “I believe I’m a good person.” And then as time goes on, her seemingly logical and straightforward morals are questioned. She and JD kill people who they think are “bad” people. At the same time, they admit to each other that they’re damaged. It takes Veronica until the end of the musical to realize... categories of “good” and “bad” are useless. EVERYONE is damaged. Just because JD had a sad backstory doesn’t make his actions any less justifiable. Just because Heather Mac was suicidal doesn’t justify the fact that she was a bully for a good portion of the musical. Just because Veronica was toxically roped into a relationship with a killer does not justify that she took part in murder. (I’m not trying to say that mental illness is not an excuse, but mental illness should drive someone to get help, not to cause pain. And causing pain to others or themselves, even from a mentally unstable individual, isn’t any less wrong.) Does that make them bad people? Not necessarily. It makes them damaged human beings who are capable of making horrid, hurtful decisions. And we are all the same. The point of it all is that we should not put people down or judge others because they are weird, different, or hurting. We should celebrate each other, help each other out, and encourage each other healthily instead of partaking in toxic relationships and tolerating cruelty. The goal isn’t to be “good” or “perfect”. It is just to be alive and appreciative of that life, and of the people we choose to share it with. The way the whole musical illustrates this through many different perspectives simply awes me. It’s absolutely genius.
OMG I JUST WROTE THE EXACT SAME THING ON “I am Damaged” GREAT MINDS THINK ALIKE I AGREE WITH YOU ANS I LIKE THE WAY YOU THINK THINKING THIS WAY MAKES ME WANNA CRY AT HOW GREAT THIS ENDING WAS, ESPECIALLY MORE RELEVANT NOW THAT THE INTERNET HAS BECOME A MAIN PLACE WHERE PEOPLE JUDGE AND JUSTIFY OTHERS AND FOR PEOPLE (like me) WHO TRY TO BE *PERFECTLY* GOOD AND NOT BE CAPABLE OF HORRID ACTIONS WHEN WE ALL ARE BECAUSE WE ARE HUMAN SORRY FOR CAPS THIS IS MY BIGGEST BELIEF AND IM HAPPY THAT SOMEONE AGREES
+Lunar Sagittarius I think that was the point of the line. Heathers is a dark comedy, so there r some things in the show that ur not sure if u should laugh at
jesus christ are you serious, why ruin something that was already perfect. all I wanted was for them to come on broadway because clearly they deserve the broadway spotlight. As if need another modern day teen shooter/suicide series.
I think that it shows a lot of respect for Martha when Veronica asks her if she's free and doesn't just assume that since she was gone Martha had no one.
I don't know what to say at the beginning of the playlist I was laughing my ass off and now I'm crying like I didn't even watch it but I could visualize everything
Most musicals use the songs as book ends, to make things feel like they've come full circle. The first song of Chicago is "All That Jazz", the last song is "Hot Honey Rag" where the last words are "and All That Jazz". The first song of the South Park movie is "Mountain Town" and the last song is "Mountain Town (Reprise)" The first song in Avenue Q is "It Sucks To Be Me" and the last song is "For Now" which has the same tune as It Sucks To be Me. The list goes on.
and then hAMILTON COMES AROUND AND SAYS SCREW THAT PATTERN WE'RE JUST GONNA COME A SCREAM THE TITLE OF THE SONG IN THE END AND YOU'LL CRY ANYWAYS BECAUSE YOU KNOW THAT WE KILLED EVERY CHARACTER YOU LOVE
ya know, hamilton says the word time throughout the musical... then repeats it at the end so much, it brings back literally everything you've just experienced and reminds you it's all over now... thanks lin
I'm so bummed. I introduced my teenage daughter to Heathers and a few weeks ago she told me about the musical. She played the soundtrack for me and I decided then and there that I was make it a priority to take her to a show and make a whole special night of it. Now I find out it was cancelled. I'm crying into my vintage red scrunchie as I type this. Why, God, WHY?!?!?
My high school did it every year. I played as JD (we had no guys who could sing), Heather Chandler, and Veronica before. I think a lot of local theatres also do it.
someone help me I'm crying 1. Because some of these lyrics, I needed to hear 2. Because I'm imagining JD in the afterlife, watching over Veronica with a smile on his face. He's proud of her. He loves her. He walks over to her, placing a hand gently on her shoulder. Veronica looks over to where he's standing as if she can feel he's there when truly, she knows he is. Even though it may seem like nobody is there, she happily returns the smile. She knows she can move on but she also knows JD will always be there, watching over her wearing a proud, loving sMILE THAT BREAKS MY DAMN HEART GAH HELP
But then after Veronica leaves to watch a movie with Martha, JD looks at the school from the outside. He smirks and turns to leave, quietly muttering to himself "Still wish I blew the damn school up.."
I always though that this was a perfect finale to the show. There didn't need to be some epilogue or anything else. Just Veronica admitting she misses her friend and opening up the doors to friendship and peace.
The one thing I would clarify is how... well, much MORE damaged Veronica would be after her experiences. JD made her into a murderer. The amount of psychological damage that has on a seventeen year old girl- on anyone, for that matter- is staggering. The unrealistic element to this song (and the musical) for me is how quickly she seemed to recover after causing the deaths of four people she knew and interacted with. So the happy ending very much upset me at first because, realistically, Veronica should not in the least bit be alright after all that. But then I realized that the ending song readdresses the themes of the first song very well, and that it really illustrates how Veronica grew morally as a person through everything. The “growth” was a little fast, but I mean, I guess you can’t end a musical like that with a traumatized girl and a sad finale number. (Or can you?) If there has to be closure, this song is the very best way to achieve it.
@@sophiaredwood5825 i think Veronika will be Kinda traumatized and will need a therapy but in the Moment she is juste released because it’s over With all the lies and JD.
@@sophiaredwood5825 The ending also reflects a trauma response, which is to rugsweep. Veronica could be seen as wanting to brush the past, JD, and what *she* did to the side and be a normal person again. It's a form of denial, to pretend that everything is fine and nothing wrong happened. She's acting as though her boyfriend didn't just blow himself up because she managed to beat his plans. She's acting as though he didn't just confess that the worst part of his actions came from an obsessive love of what she was for him. She's completely in denial and trying to bury things already.
I listened to candy store and thought "eh, this'll be something alright to listen to whilst I revise" it is now one hour later, I have revised nothing and I feel slightly broken inside.
What I like about this song and ending is that it's hopeful. Like Veronica says, "I can't promise no more Heathers...." etc but that there's still time to figure things out and that in the meantime they can just live their lives. It's truly beautiful :)
It’s kind of interesting the line: “Maybe then we’ll never die!!” Both Martha and Heather McNamara had sung this (Im not sure about Heather McNamara but I know Martha did) and both of them almost/ did commit suicide. I think this line shows them moving on and deciding to keep pushing and living on. I think this song tries to emphasize that even in the dark there are still a hidden happy ending. BUT THATS JUST A THEORY. A musical theory-
If I ever get around to animating this song, my vision of the ending when they all sing "Beautiful" would be Heather Chandler, Ram and Kurt coming out and singing as well, and finally J.D comes out after they finish and whispers, "beautiful".
"I can't promise no more Heathers." Out of context this almost sounds like a 90s either zombie apocalypse or clone episode. "They have taken the gym and the cafeteria. We have barred the doors but cannot hold them for long. The ground shakes, heels... heels in the hall. We cannot get out. A scrunchie lurks in the dark. We can not get out... they are coming."
I feel the need to point out that here, they say "we'll make things beautiful", while in the first song, Veronica always said "This could be beautiful", which I think represents her character development really well. she started believing that things would happen of their own, that she could be saved by her prince charming, and that if things were meant to be, then they would be. By the end of the musical, she's realised that she can't be a passive character in her own life, and that she needs to be her own hero, that if she doesn't make things happen, then they might not. by the end of the musical, Veronica is prepared to make things beautiful, instead of waiting for them to become.
I love the difference between movie JD and musical JD. In the movie when dies he doesn't care about saving Veronica and she literally lights her cigarette on the fire that blows him up. In the musical he blows himself up to save Veronica because even know he's a deeply disturbed sociopath he still cares for her.
Well, friendship sure is better than murder/suicide, aaaaand it's totally fine to get away with being partly responsible for a few killings in high school (seriously that kid from 21 Chump Street must be all like "WHAT THE HECK! goshdarn white people)
What I learned is to not try and be friends with the mean popular kids. I mean Veronica doing that just set the musical off into death and sadness. Oh, and get a therapist if your dad is weird. In fact, if you have the tendencies and impulse to start a de-construction business, get a therapist. This would've been so much easier if Veronica stuck with Martha the entire time, and JD's dad got a therapist when he was younger. And if someone helped JD's mom Yee
Jenny T20 but we wouldn’t have a musical then would we? I’m joking anyways Veronica would still get Bullied so her life would turn out shit anyways ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
ArtTart Guysssss there is a really good bootleg with the obc so Barret, Ryan, ext. Type in Heather's bootleg on RU-vid and it should pop up. Not as good as seeing it live but putting in the acting and set and stuff like that gives it SO much more depth.
I love how initially, Veronica brings up the thought to ’blow this town‘ and ’set this dump ablaze‘, but in the end, she's the one who prevents just that, almost at the cost of hat life.
omfg this is Hamilton for me all over again. at first all funny and happy then sad and my obsession started with one song then spread like a wild fire in a delighted forest.
I watched the 1989 movie with a friend and thought to myself "this would be a dope musical" then my friend texts me a couple hours after she left my place and linked me My Dead Gay Son and I was like 0_o
Cozed15 it was like a blue reprise where Kurt and ram were bragging about how Veronica sucked both their dicks. It's what made her cry in our love is gos
I know everyone is talking about how beautiful the meaning of this song is. But i want to talk about how gorgeous this song is musically. The final chord progression, martha and veronica’s harmonies, the boys in the background… ITS AMAZING Pls like this so i can come back to it 😭
Emma Kilgannon tbh I could either see that happening, or she's kind of scared of lawyers? Like she doesn't want JD to have any more control over her life than he already did idk tho 😂
plot twist- JD turned her off guys forever so she becomes a lesbian. *Just so it is clear. this Is a joke. not meant to offend anyone. I completely support the LGBTQ+ community*
I'm seventeen today! Oh man this hits extra hard “act like we're all still kids cause this could be our final chance” I'll try to make it beautiful ok guys :`)
I see people talking about a bunch of parts of this song in the comments but the part that always stuck with me for years was "If no one loves me now, someday, somebody will." it just hits bro
"I can't promise no more Heathers high school may not ever end' This is sad but true. Literally you will graduate but people will still be assholes and High school was just the tip of the iceberg. Only difference is they try to justify their actions by saying that they are grown
Heather: Hello again ,Jerk JD:Oh no...... Heather: Oh yes! Kurt and Ram :We're back, Baby! Heather:Actually, You came to us,Welcome...... Jerk! Ram: Oh yeah, We all have something to discuss with you. JD: Lemme guess, You all are mad about me killing you , right? Heather:Actually ,we all are more than "Just mad".😡 Kurt:Yeah! WHY DID YOU KILL US , YOU MURDERER! Ram:Yeah, I'm pretty sure that you're beloved Veronica is glad your gone. Kurt:Yeah dude , You left quite the impact on her.
I like how in "Seventeen" Veronica asks JD if they can be seventeen, but in the reprise she sings "we can be seventeen". She is affirming it. You can see all the developing of Veronica´s character in that. How Veronica wonders and is not sure, thinking that she will never be happy and a normal teenager, but then she realizes that she can. That everyone can. That´s one of the reasons I love musicals. They can change everything in one line.
BAHAHA!! "Yeah, remember when I kinda forged a note, pretending that I was your ex-boyfriend that missed you and wanted you back? Ah yes, the good old days."
Idea: Veronica still sees the ghosts she’s seen throughout the musical, but after the finale and the movie night, she finds the ghost of J.D waiting for her, and he’s able to be with her and help her the best he can through life, even in death.
Krista Masucci she didn't say that one was better than the other, she simply stated that it made her happy? although I do agree, I liked Heathers much more than Rent, personally.
Whoa, why are people arguing? xD Im just saying the song like builds up to an epic ending like the Rent ending song and makes me feel happy. Im not dissing either show. I like both. Newsies is my top favorite show over both though.
No arguing! Perhaps just discussing or commenting? Either way, I agree with you about the ending! I liked how it ended happily (well, as happy as it could have for a bunch of teenagers being murdered hehe)
The thing that bothers me is that in Heathers no one get arrested or anything (besides JD getting blown up but he deserved that) but in 21 Chump street Justin gets arrested for Naomi forcing him to take the money smh.
+Elizabeth Jones Okay, no, Naomi should not have "died in a ditch". She was doing her job. And yes, while she did make Justin take the money, he got the drugs for her in the first place. And when she asked him if he smoked, he literally said "no I don't, but if that's what you need I can buy some for you, I can be your supply". So they were both in the wrong. Justin wasn't innocent, he made his choices. 21 Chump Street always tears me up inside because of this. We want to side with Justin because he's just so adorable, but Naomi was doing her job and Justin was being stupid.
+Katie Haupt but he got arrested for selling drugs and the ONLY reason he "sold" them was because she had him do it. And if she didn't force him to take the money he wouldn't have got in all the trouble he did! That's not her job, that's entrapment!
I'm not gonna say Duke is a good person, cause she definitely isn't but I feel like people judge her too harshly. I feel like the reason why most people hate her is cause: 1) She doesn't have an actual personality and imitates people, 2) She is extremely attention seeking and 3) she is unempathetic. So, first reason, I feel like she doesn't have much if a personality cause she was always shut down you know. For example, in candystore she is immediately shut down when she tries to take the lead and I feel like this May have caused her to be insecure. I feel like constantly being shutdown by Heather C made her loose any of the self confidence she had. And then she goes on to see Heather C basically run the school which probably makes her think that she needs to become Heather C to be popular. Reason two, again this is linked to the above reason. With her constantly being shut down I think she tries to gain as much attention as possible to feel confident. It also doesn't help that she is constantly put down in front of other people, like McNamara for example. This only makes her more insecure and attention seeking to gain satisfaction. 3) Okay so for this one I'm not very sure but here's what i think happened. I'm gonna only focus the Shine a Light reprise cause that was the biggest example of this. So in Shine a Light when she sees McNamara getting attention for suicide I mainly think that she is jealous cause obviously McNamara got a lot more attention and kindness from Heather C than Duke which probably made her competitive about attention. Duke at this point pretty much hates McNamara cause Heather C very blatantly treated Mc much better. So at this point its just hate and jealousy in a messy mixture acting. Another point id like to add is that a lot of people glorify Heather C and I agree she is definitely a great character, but calling her better than Duke seems wrong to me. In my opinion, its because of Heather C Duke turned out the way she did. Heather C definitely knew what she was doing and I feel that a lot of people overlook this. I see tons of people bashing Duke while praising Heather C and it makes me kinda mad.
Does anyone else feel a little, too sweet ending? I love it, don't get me wrong, but especailly with the whole plot of the musical "80's highschool with guy in a trenchcoat blows up the school" it just seems too sweet? Just me?
yeah, the ending of the movie was more bittersweet than this it was kind of like "oh hey heather duke suck my ass btw martha wanna hang" and that was it but in the musical it's a little too hopeful for my liking but what can ya do
I think this is quite a good ending, because I saw this musical as teenagers having to deal with much more "grown-up" stuff like death, suicide and heartbreak so for the ending to just be them breaking out into a cheery song and dance just seems like they can finally go back to being teenagers
I agree, I feel like the only downside to this musical (and the movie tbh) leaves out the consequences. If three of the most popular kids at my school 'killed themselves' and then right after some kid blows themselves up on school premises, people would be mentally scarred. This kind of ending suits mean girls, but this is too dark to have it end in a cheesy 'everything's good again' dance number, because tbh it's not. Kids are dead and everyone is fucked up.
