This week we're looking at arpeggios and chord construction. Specifically Seventh Chords. When you start out learning chord tones, it's common for teachers to limit exercises to a few common patterns such as the Major and Minor Triads then the Major 7, Minor 7, Dominant 7 and Minor 7 Flat 5 chords.
However, this only scratches the surface of chord tones. A more rounded, fundamental study of chord construction principles will enable you to understand any chord presented in a chord chart and provide a better foundation for studying music in general.
The first lesson on triads and tertian harmony can be found here: • Triad Arpeggios For Ba...
The Chord Tone Essentials course is a huge deep dive into every area of chord construction, arpeggios and chord tone use in bass lines, fills and solos. Enroll here at Talkingbass: www.talkingbass.net/chord-ton...

Great lesson as usual Mark and I learnt these years ago but wish I had the internet back then and your YT channel as I would have learnt it quicker. I think your lessons, teaching, the way you explain things makes you one of, if not the best out there. Obviously there's a lot of very grateful bass players on here, which reflects your teaching abilities. Cheers

Ps, I met a young guy recently, bass player who was talking about wanting to work, gig on cruise ships. I advised him to look up your cruise vlog. I watched those at the time and they were a great series. I looked at 1 again yesterday and that was 2017. Scary how fast time goes.

@@mrbungle7586 Definitely. The weirdest thing is when I think back to my first ever cruise gig in 2001. That seems like yesterday. Then again, I left high school in 1990 and even that seems like yesterday (got some funny footage of me playing from back then when I was a Billy Sheehan clone). Now I know what my parents are talking about when they talk about the '50s!

I was just practicing Cowboys From Hell out of one of those "every bass player should know these lines" books, and realized that it is a serious finger workout of a song. It really stresses 16th notes and string skipping, as well as bass chords! It'd be a hell of video to do, Mark.

Thanks Mark. Once again, very well explained. When I first scrolled/scanned through the lesson, i though OMG this is too complicated for me.Once I started watching and you explained it so clearly, it really wasn't that complicated. Of course, I already knew my arpeggios from one of your prior course, so that helped.

Thank you for this wealth of information. I am wondering if I still following these pattern without wondering of the octave does it still ok? Ex: Cmaj7#5 = C E G# B, then D#...?

I think Mark is a great teacher and he gives great lessons but he goes extremely fast. I understand what he is saying but I cannot follow at that speed. Still, his classes are probably some of the best on internet, you just have to slow it down and pause and review/rewind all the time.

@@talkingbasslessons There are a lot of brilliant bass players on You Tube - but in my view none of them explain things so clearly as Mark. If you focus and follow what he's saying your playing will improve beyond recognition. A lot of things 'suck' in this world - 'Talking Bass' isn't one of them.

Why? This is awesome! You need some fundamental information. So I'd suggest that you take your time and learn it slowly. Continue to watch Davie504, if you think you can't do that.
