Actually, the word martyr is simply used as an honour of those who have died. Schools which have giant sculptures of Attaturk are also often named after 'Martyrs' or philanthropists. Those who are considered Marytrs are those who have died in the pursuit of protection of the homeland, and this is treated with the utmost respect and condolence of the entire nation. NOW, cast your mind back to how hero soldiers are remembered in the UK in recent times. Do their bodies get a calvaclade of military cars to return them to their home city and a burial of honour? Does the UK general public hear about and express loss for each dead solider? Sadly not. The word 'sehit' or Martyr in common terms is less about religion and more about the moral character traits of herotic conduct and bravery leading to the ultimate sacrifice.
