I return to Crew Green in Wales, via Halfway House in England, and cross over Melverley Bridge back into England. I discover a stunning wattle and daub church, and a ruined castle. Stay tuned right at the end for a special bonus feature!

Very interesting, I have had to for the first time report footpaths being blocked by farmers in the last couple of months. Sad 😞

Thank you Cara. Yes, sadly, it does seem to be becoming increasingly common, judging by several newspaper articles online. Like you, this is the first time that I have had to report (multiple) blockages, since I started my wanderings on my channel back in Feb 2021. Thank you for watching and commenting, and thank you for your excellent videos too 🙂 Cheers Paul 👍

Hello Paul - greetings from Poland Another superb video with wonderful photography, beautiful still photographs and a terrific commentary. Blocked footpath by putting a building across it. Is that legal? I think the local authorities must take responsibility for ensuring sfae passage along their footpaths, A fantastic bridge at Crew Green, crossing back into England. What a fabulous church at Melverely. It looks a barn! And what fascinating information about the Darwin family too. The walk through that wheat field was unbelieable with those ginormous cracks in the ground caused by drought. The villages of Pentre and Shawradine looked lovely with their red sandstone churches. Alderton Hall looked very grand as were the castle ruins. The information about Montford Bridge was fascinating and the windmill absolutley mindblowing.. All in all, what a wonderful entertaining walk. Thanks so much for taking me along.

Thank you Michael! Glad you enjoyed it! Yes, I did like this walk, footpath issues aside. No, it most certainly isn't legal to block a footpath, especially with a building! However, Powys only have one footpath officer to cover 1,000s kms of paths, and, I don't think anyone has successfully been prosecuted. Powys, in particular, seems to be a very troublesome area with regards to footpaths according to Ramblers UK and other bodies. Such a shame. The other issue is most of those paths that I highlighted are trans-national paths in that they lie across two countries, so I guess neither country is responsible, nor accountable? That church at Melverley blew me away! What isn't conveyed in pictures and sound is the atmosphere and smell of what it was like inside. A true church gem! Sadly, I couldn't find Darwin's parents headstone(s) - neither in person nor online, but many of the headstones have become badly worn making reading the names very difficult. There will be more Darwin related things in coming videos because Charles Darwin was born and raised in Shrewsbury. I am really looking forward to showing my viewers Shrewsbury, because it is a gem of a town. Thanks again, and thank you for your continuing support - it means a lot to me. Kind Regards, Paul

Thank you Louise! Glad you enjoyed it. Yes, I couldn't quite believe my eyes at first! It wasn't until I checked the map that confirmed what I had seen. Online, I found a photo of the windmill taken just a few years ago, showing it without any sails, so it looks like it is a relatively recent restoration. Just thought it was so photogenic sat in those fields. Thanks again, Paul 👍🙂

Really enjoyed this walk Paul. I am definitely with you on the lack of consideration to walkers by certain councils. They real are missing a truck and putting walkers off areas. Had a similar issue Ona walk we did near Knaresbourough in York’s where the circular walk simply wasn’t able to be completed. Ended up turning back and re tracing our steps. Good to see the windmill as well. Look forward to seeing Shrewsbury. Vlog. Keep wandering. 👍🏻🚶🏻‍♂️🚶‍♀️

Oh yes! Paul. Another excellent walk, full of interesting features, especially that beautiful timber framed church. Must be quite rare, but exceptionally pretty. I agree with about footpath access. They should not be blocked or over grown. There is a law which states that a path must be walked at least once every year, or the right of way may cease. As for the brambles. The dry weather hasn’t bothered them. Growing out from the hedgerows into the lanes. I think the authorities rely on people actually walking the pathway to keep the undergrowth in check. We have one not far away which we used a lot back in the spring, but now it’s impassable. Ah well! They’ll tell us there’s no money for clearing paths. I liked that windmill at the end of the film, but I assume you couldn’t get any closer. Just one little niggle Paul. Can you use ‘miles’ and not ‘kilometers’. This is England and we’re not in the EU anymore. I was reared on miles. Haha.

Thank you Lionel & Mary! Glad you enjoyed the walk. Yes, the windmill is privately owned and surrounded by private land - it was as close as I could get, but it is the most authentic windmill that I have ever seen (better than the one at Avoncroft in Bromsgrove (athough that is well worth viewing), which was moved onto the outdoor museum site). Full credit for the owner for restoring it - think it was only completed recently. Yes, I will keep viewers updated about the paths and the relevant local authorities, but I wouldn't hold my breath for any immediate response - I'll probably be very lucky to get a reply! Thanks again, Paul.

Another wonderful walk, some beautiful scenery around this part too, shame a few footpaths seem to be lost, possibly forever unfortunately. The bonus windmill was fantastic shame you couldn’t get right up to it but it was great to see.. onto part 8 now

Thanks for sharing footage of the windmill, quite charming, it rather added to your already long day. There is a certain amount of blood sweat & tears with your Wanderings, with brambles across stiles & blocked footpaths.

Thank you faith! Yes, it was just a blink of an eye as it went past in the car - but the map confirmed it. Looks like it has only recently been restored, with the sails just added. Thanks again, take care, Paul.

Yet another very enjoyable video Paul. With regards to the bonus bit, how on earth did you manage to spot that windmill from the road. I don't know how many times I've travelled that road but I have never noticed it. I will be looking out for it the next time I'm there. When you get to Shrewsbury you will not be disappointed with the architecture. About 6 weeks ago my partner, her friend and myself decided to have a proper visit not to just basically drive through. Two places that are really worth a visit are the Castle Museum by the railway station and then the Shrewsbury Museum & Art Gallery located in the Square SY1 1LH. If you have time another place is The Quarry which is located in the big loop for the River Severn. This area is used for a number of functions throughout the year, such as the Flower Show in mid August. The Quarry Gardens were started by Percy Thrower when he became the head of the parks & gardens for Shrewsbury. I think, (I may be wrong) was the first gardener to have a TV series. If you are not familiar with the town your best bet is to park up on one of the park & ride car parks & take the bus into the town. Take care and stay safe and look forward to the next instalment.

Thank you John! I had a (very quick) look at Shrewsbury when I was changing busses - looks amazing, and like you say, a lot to explore. I will catch the train there from Gloucestershire, and I will definitely check out the Castle Museum and the Shrewsbury Museum & Art Gallery. Sounds great! I can see it extended to two videos and two trips! Yes, I think the windmill has only recently been restored, so it may well have been 'sans sails' when you last drove past. A photo on the internet shows it without sails, and I think it was only taken a year or so ago. There is nothing online about its history though. Thanks again, Paul.

That’s an interesting and beautiful church, Paul. And a windmill too - what a find! Disappointing to find blocked paths. It is a criminal offence, there’s a lot about legalities on rights of way on Gov.uk website. Unfortunately, though I’m guessing, it’s probably difficult to get action or prosecution. Last time for me was on a trail run and a padlocked five bar gate. No problem for me to climb over but that’s no option for a lot of walkers. I did come across a new build construction over a path a few years ago but the owners had done the right thing and put in a sign posted diversion.
@westcountrywanderings
@westcountrywanderings 2 года назад
Thank you Ian! I think the problem with those footpaths is that they all cross national borders (they start and end in different countries), so I don't know which national goverment and/or local authority is ultimately responsible. Maybe the landowners realise this too, and have done what they have done. I have also learnt since filming this that Powys local council in Wales has just one officer responsible for 1,000 kms of paths! They are swapped with a long list of transgressions, and blocked paths according to BBC News. The church was stunning, wasn't it? Although you couldn't see my face, if you had done, you would have seen that I was opened mouthed! Yes, the windmill was amazing, and only very recently restored by its owner - sadly no information on its history is available online as far as I can tell. Thanks so much for your comment and supporting my channel - it is greatly appreciated! Cheers, Paul.

@@westcountrywanderings That’s it, Paul. Rural crime being the problem it is, an unkept path or locked gate isn’t going to be a priority. Oh well, we have to be philosophical and pragmatic. Looking forward to Severn 8. 🙂
