Thank you for this. I am new to quilting so was looking for an easy way to do this. Helped heaps. It's playing with my head tho the math behind the adding 1 3/4"? After cutting myself with the rotary, I totally respect the glove!!
At first the math can be hard to grasp, but there are just a few to memorize. It has to do with the angles used. Funny, I wish now I had listened better back in 10th grade geometry! Sometimes drawing it out on paper as if it were fabric sometimes helps. But you can trust us, we tested it ten ways to Sunday - It works every time:)
question.... ok, if your version of “finished size” for the purposes of the video remain with seam allowance, and I am in need of 2.5 inch triangle squares with seam allowance included, that means I need 6.75 inch squares? Is that correct?
I'm confused by your instructions regarding the formula. You use the word "finished" half-square triangle, then point to the eight unfinished units to the right! I was taught that the finished state of pieced unit is AFTER its been sewn into the quilt...in other words, no unfinished (not sewn) seam allowances remain. Please clarify how you're using the term "finished." Thank you!
Good question. That is confusing. She says in the video "like these are" and points to the blocks on the table. Since she is pointing to the squares after they have been cut and before they are further sewed into the quilt, we are talking about seam allowances remaining. In the pattern I am using, the "finished half square triangle" size is given, so check your pattern carefully. Hope this helps.
Help! I have had a layer cake for years, and finally added white fabric to make 1/2 sq triangles. Now I have 152 6" squares. I would have a few more, but they need fixing. How many across and how many down to make a large quilt. I don't think I will end up with KS, but If I add a border or maybe 2 borders, I might enlarge it enough for my KS bed.
Susan - I'm answering from home - not as Fons & Porter - King is usually about 95 x 108. That being said, you are on your way to King size. By my calculations you may need 208 squares if the blocks finish at 6". If you haven't subtracted seam allowances you will need more. In a 13 x 16 block layout you could then add either a 6 inch single border or divide it up for a 2 and 4 inch set of borders. I hope this helps get you to the finish line:) Happy Quilting!
Sorry I didn't catch this until today. That is one way to "mark" the diagonal. Some quilters may use this method and it's completely acceptable. Others want a more defined line or like me, they don't have perfect light and/or young eyes and would rather have a line to follow. Happy Quilting:)
Great technique. I have to say though that it is completely unnecessary to purchase a branded gadget to make these. We are quilters. We have plenty of rulers and every one of them has 1/4" markings.
I just finished this method and was trying to have a finished(seam allowances included) 3 1/2" block, mine came out to 4". I believe you might only be able to use this method if you are trying to reach a whole number(in my case I wanted 3 1/2) Was this the case for you as well? Normally when making HST you would trim to size but I don't think that is the case in this method, I could be wrong but I don't think so....I was wrong, this method needs to be squared up too and as Nadine states they always have to be trimmed so you're right that you have to square them up, part of the process of this particular block
