what side of the template is aligned with the fold? the 2 1/4" or the 2 1/2"?

When folded in half, long edge to long edge, short edge to short edge. Hope this helps!

How do you know what side of the template to put in the corner. 2 1/4 and the 2 1/2 since the measurements are different.
