Thankyou for this helpful video, I make a lot of queen size quilts so basting is always a chore, one question I have it does the quilt do ok on the pool noodle once it is completely pin basted, with all the pins in it and all three layers with the pins are all rolled onto one pool noodle, is the quilt still smooth on the pool noodle or bumpy from all the pins? I hope my question makes sense I was unsure of how to word it right? Thankyou:)

You make this much easier than it actually is. It is a good idea, but as much as I measured to make sure I had the backing larger the top, the top ended up stretching. Next time I will make sure the backing is way larger. I used basting spray to put my layers together. I was not happy with it, it is hardly sticky at all. I have discovered that I need way more space than the top of an extra wide ironing board.

The top shouldn't stretch unless it's being pushed out fairly taught. Try gently smoothing and see if that helps. The problem with it stretching is I'm concerned that once quilted it will relax and not give you the results you want. What type of basting spray were you using? For the smaller project like I was working on (on my large cutting table), KK100 was fine (it's normally used for emboridery); however, for a larger quilt, I think you'd be better of with a dedicated quilt basting spray. Quilt basting sprays are stickier than embroidery type basting sprays. I like a lighter basting spray so as not to gum up my needle. =)

Here's what I've done when I've needed a longer pool noodle: Get a dowel rod the diameter of the hole in the noodle and attach them together that way.

Maybe we can use a 4th pool noodle to roll the "sandwich done" with pine just in the beginning??

Try using a hole punch for leather. They come in different sizes and work great for other projects.

I know this an older post and you may not even see this but wanted to ask a question. Love the explanation of how to do this, although it was a bit long. My question is how do you line up the centers of your layers if your back is pieced? I almost always use more than one fabric on the back and I can't figure how to line them up once they are rolled. Any ideas.
@SewInspiredbyBonnie
@SewInspiredbyBonnie 5 лет назад
That's a good question. You would measure width and length of each layer prior to rolling. Divided the difference of each layer by 2. Say the backing is 60W x 80L the batting is the same and the topper is 50W x 70L. You'd have measurements 60W - 50W = 10 divided by 2 = 5" extension for width and 80L - 70L = 10 divided by 2 = 5" extension length. So an extension of 5" both directions. So what this means is, when you layer the pool noodles, make sure your backing (and batting since they're the same width and length in this example) extends 5" from the top and each side and you will be centered while you unroll. Hope that makes sense. =)

@@SewInspiredbyBonnie Actually that does. Pretty much how I thought but always good to hear someone explain what you are thinking!! I was also working with directional pattern and had to think about what way to wrap the noodles so that both bottoms ended up on the bottom!! Thanks for the quick answer.

Why not just use cardboard from an empty box of which we all have.
@SewInspiredbyBonnie
@SewInspiredbyBonnie Месяц назад
I don’t think cardboard would roll as nicely and it would take a very long box. These are easy and pins go right into the pool noodle.

You may also want to keep the topics to one per video. Any extra tip could be a separate, shorter video. Shorter videos are easier to watch- a half hour video is a LONG time to watch, especially when the focus thought is ten minutes in. A half hour network show is less than 25 minutes because of commercials to break them up. There is no breaking it up here, so shorter is better. Good information, but clarity is most important.

You may want to write out your script first and cut it down to the most pertinent points. Film the abbreviated version and see whether it is clearer. I fast forwarded to get to the more-relevant parts.

Great idea but I refuse to encourage the plastics industry by buying those things or any other plastic I can avoid buying, but if I see one left behind at the pool I'll take it. Also, if you could make your videos shorter I would appreciate it. There are a lot of videos I want to watch and 30 minutes on one video is a long time. Thanks again for the tips.
