How to sew a fully-lined zippered pouch - great for beginners.
Embroidery optional
Golden retriever sketch design by Ohmycs.com
"M" monogram - Elegant Damask by Designs by Juju
Materials:
Cut 2 of each:
Outer fabric - can use a variety of fabrics, including quilters cottons, outdoor fabric, twill, denim, canvas
6" x 9"
Lining fabric - lighter fabric like quilting cotton recommended
6" x 9"
zipper tabs - can use either lining fabric for contrast, or outer fabric
2" x 3"
Fusible Interfacing: I used Pellon ShapeFlex 101 (SF-101), because my outer fabric was canvas. For lighter fabrics, you can use a heavier interfacing such as fusible fleece (Pellon 987f) or
fusible thermolam (Pellon TP971f).
6" x 9"
1 nylon zipper - 9" or longer, we'll cut it down

Clara- I just wanted to let you know that people are still watching your video. It is the best I've watched for easy-to-follow instructions and visuals. The tip about lining up the zipper was perfect. Good job!

I loved the zipper tabs! My bag came out very nice! I did a sunflower embroidery on a teal background. I did stitch a little too close to the zipper - let's be honest - I stitched the zipper closed. ah well = as we sew so shall we rip...

This is an excellent tutorial with clear instructions and clear video. I appreciate the tip of making zippers 1" shorter than the size of whatever bag I may be making. Brilliant in avoiding oversized lining problems which may occur with patterns that make a separate lining "bag" to be slipped into the outer fabric of the bag. Thankyou very much for a enjoyable pattern and tutorial.

The zipper tabs make a huge difference in how the corners turn out. They look very square in comparison to some of bags I’ve made without the tabs. I’m much happier with the results. Thank you!!

Yes, they prevent the “pinched” look at the end of zippers. They also make a nice design element in coordinating fabric!

Thank you so much for this tutorial! I've made lots of zippered pouches throughout the years, but it was always without the zipper tabs- making for very inconsistent results. After watching your tutorial, I've been able to make these knowing that I will be pleased with the results! I am so happy now! Thank you!!!! :)

OMG. You just gave me a wonderful idea. I could make this bag but use fusible vinyl on the lining, embroider a dog on the front for puppy treats.
@carasorellasewing

Yes. And you can make it any size you want. Just cut your zipper 1” shorter than the top opening of your bag.

I probably watched 4-5 "high production" videos of making a zippered pouch, and I felt like they were taking measures to oversimplify or overcomplicate rather than just provide good, solid instructions. I also appreciate that you actually SHOW how the zipper foot should look while sewing. This is a great tutorial, and I'm going to go back and complete my second zippered pouch using your tutorial. That dog monogram is soooo cute! I am now definitely inspired to start using the embroidery feature of my machine.

Awww you’re too kind. I’m just a mom with a kid camera-person, so no fancy production, but my goal is to make videos that my child can follow too. She’s also my tester and asks lots of insightful questions, so if she asks about a particular part or has trouble with a technique I make sure to include an explanation and visuals. I figure if she can make whatever it is, most adults can too. 😄

This was by far the best tutorial for someone wanting to learn how to make a seamless bag! THANK YOU! :) I sewed along to your video step by step (also i added my own twist on a few things) and for my first time doing this, it didn't turn out too bad at all. I defiantly learned something and now when i make one next time I'll know how to do it in a way that is best for me!

Cute simple project. It would also look cute if you would have used red thread to topstitch the zipper. Nice tutorial.

Thanks for sharing! Made one out of denim today. Note for the future: do not make zipper stops in denim, it gets to 'wonky' ;-) But other than that, the result was fantastic. Going to use it as an envelope for a birtyday gift, to put the money in.
@carasorellasewing
@carasorellasewing 5 лет назад
Good tip. I generally make the tabs out of the lining fabric because I like the contrast, and I almost always use a quilting type cotton. You might be able to use a denim if you don’t double it up on both sides, but just the top. The part under the zipper would have a raw edge, but it wouldn’t really be exposed since its inside the bag. I wouldn’t try it with a fabric that frays a lot, though.

Thanks for this tutorial! My zippers came out great but my lining feels bulky and full/shifty, I’m using PUL and making reusable snack bags. Any suggestions?
@carasorellasewing
@carasorellasewing 3 года назад
Maybe try using a lighter interfacing on the outer fabric? Are you using 2 layers of pul or fabric outer and pul only for the lining? SF101 should be sufficient on an outer canvas or cotton if your lining has body.

Wonderful instructions! Thank you so much....I have one question.In minute 6.17 while attaching the other half of the pouch, you say that you have to line it up with the "back" of the outer fabric. Shouldn't it be the "front" of the outer fabric instead.?This got me confused but I finally figured it out and made a beautiful pouch!
@carasorellasewing
@carasorellasewing 4 года назад
I probably could have worded that better, I was speaking about the back piece of the pouch (the front has the embroidery)

@budoneof15

Why are my corners by the zipper ends not coming to a sharp point like yours?
@carasorellasewing
@carasorellasewing 5 лет назад
It’s a little hard to diagnose without seeing, but here are a couple of things to check. Have the tabs been sewn into the side seam? Mine aren’t. Assuming they aren’t, you should be able to use your fingers or chopsticks to poke those corners out. Don’t be afraid to really get your hands in there and wrestle it out. (Watch the video at 11:46 - 11:56 so you can watch me push the tabs out). The other potential issue is if you are using a really heavy interfacing, you may want to cut it a 1/4” shorter on each side before attaching it to the outer fabric to eliminate bulk at the seams and corners.

Is that a weighted ruler? What brand? Also what kind/brand of fabric cutter is that? And fabric clips brand please 😀😀😀Okay, I guess I'll ask about your sewing machine brand (hahahahahaha) 😀
@carasorellasewing
@carasorellasewing 5 лет назад
It’s a clear quilting ruler, and I’ve added on a handle. Your sewing shops should sell them, I wouldn’t worry about the brand. You will need a self healing cutting mat if you want to use the rotary cutter. The rotary cutter is a Martelli ergonomic. I love them so much more than the straight ones.
