Let's make the Perfect Oven Mitt!--- not too tight, not too long, not too loose, not too stiff, not too complicated. Download my free pattern and we'll walk through all the steps together! *NOTE: my pattern piece recommends an additional layer of QUILT BATTING (so you have 4 layers total). This is in addition to what is shown in this video. You may chose to add this or not. It will make the project slightly more bulky to sew. But the added layer is nice for ample heat protection on your oven mitt.
SUPPLIES NEEDED for 1 OVEN MITT:
• 1 Fat Quarter (or 1/4 yard) of fabric for the outer layer
• 1 FQ (or 1/4 yard) of fabric for the lining layer
• 1 FQ (or 1/4 yard) of Quilt Batting* (see not above) (cotton or other batting)
• 1 FQ (or 1/4 yard) of "Quilted Ironing Board Cover" fabric (or other similar fabric)
• Small amount of ".5 inch wide, extra wide double fold bias tape" -- you can purchase in pre-made packets at the fabric store, or make your own! (see video link below)

Thank you for the cute pattern. I have seen several patterns online and they all seem to have the same problem...the thumb is too short, which makes it difficult to grip a hot pan securely, because you can't bend your thumb. I apologize if this is a silly question but, how can your pattern be adjusted so folks with long fingers get a proper fit in the thumb area?

Oh good! I'm you like the pattern. You can definitely adjust longer for different needs! I would draw the line of the thumb area out about a 1/2 inch or longer on the paper after you print it. This might take a little trial and error, trying it a few times to get it where you'd like for yourself. But I think that's a fun adventure :) Something to keep in mind is that the "finished" thumb will be longer than how it looks on the pattern piece, since you're sewing into the fabric with your seam allowance. Hopefully that makes sense! Have fun sewing! - Dana

Could you sew the bias tape on the fabric before it is finished?

Yes, you can definitely do that....there are multiple ways to sew attach the bias tape. I thought this would be the easiest method, with the most polished finish. But another way is to sew one of the "side seams" of the oven mitt first , then sew the bias tape to the entire bottom of the two pieces, then sew the rest of the oven mitt together, sewing the other "side seam". The only negative to that is that the side seam is a bit exposed at the opening of the oven mitt. That's why I prefer sewing the bias tape at the end...so it nicely binds the seams inside. Hopefully that makes sense! But just experiment and you'll find which method you like best.

The blog post and this video really need to say that you need extra wide double fold bias tape… I just bought regular double fold bias tape and what you have is definitely the wider version.

@@ashleywalker2611 Oh good! Sorry about that! I just added that detail into the video and tutorial. Also, when you print the pattern (if you printed before tonight at 11pm, go back and grab the updated version), I added a note on there that you can add an additional layer of quilt batting in your oven mitt, in the "quilt sandwich". This is optional, and will make it slightly more bulky to sew...but you might like that ample heat protection. Either way is fine, just wanted to add that tid bit in there! :)

Yes. You can prewash fabric. Sorry I forget to mention that at times in my videos! If you're going to do that, I would pre-wash/dry ALL the layers you plan to use, so they all "preshrink" :)

If this is for a man’s use should I make it bigger all the way around? Would I just add like 1.5 inches around the border? How thick batting do you use? And what fabric is the outer and lining made of? Thank you for your wonderful videos and help.

I had my husband try these out and they worked for him too! But if you're worried about that, yes, you can add an extra 1/2 inch all the way around on the pattern. It might take a little trial and error, like it did for me trying out all those versions :)

Oh Dana 🤣 Q. I see a lot of sewists trim around the curves of a project with regular scissors 🤔I was just wondering why nobody suggests pinking sheers 🤔 is it or, does it just depend on the thickness, type of fabric, personal preference ??? 🤷🏻‍♀️just curious because or, what is the purpose pinking sheers?

Hi! That's a great question...yes, you can definitely use pinking shears. And you're right, that is the concept---to trim around with scissors that cut in a zigzag pattern so the fabric edges are less likely to fray over time. So yes, in theory, it's all yes. hahah. But in reality, I hate using them. There. I said it! They're hard to cut with, hard to cut through all those layers. And I don't find that my fabric edges fray very much anyway (even when I make clothing, like shorts, skirts, etc). But you should give them a try and see how you like them!
