FYI, the lines on a 3X5 card are exactly 1/4” apart. I carry extra cards for students. Put your needle in a line, line up with edge of foot , lower foot and check the setting.

My late auntie was a tailor, as were her parents, and one thing my mom & I picked up from them is that they were very selective about what measuring tools they introduced to their workspace and each single one of them needed to be tested for consistency with the others. They had one 'benchmark' measuring tape for reference. It has not occurred to me to test my sewing machine plate. Thank you for this video. All the best!

If you have a Pfaff you can also get a 1/4 seam foot. The foot has small bar on the side that guides the fabric like similar to the way the magnetic seam guide works.

There's a needle gauge that has holes in it to set the perfect seam you need for a project from 1/8" to 1.5". One is called "Ideal needle gauge", and even has a scant 1/4", the other is by Dritz and I'm sure there is more. There's a hole in the template plastic that you can put your unthreaded needle into and then mark the edge however you prefer. Makes lining up the proper edge super simple. I lay about 6-7 layers of painters tape cut off a 1" roll. When it doesn't stick great anymore I just score the corner with a pin, remove the bottom piece of tape and it's brand new again. When I'm not using it, I stick it to my machine someplace. Never leaves a residue and is always handy. I've even used a fine marker so I know where to put the painters tape or to use without the painters tape, depending on the job. The marker comes off with rubbing alcohol. Works for me
@sugarstitchesquiltco

Great video! One thing I consider when I'm learning something is that when someone shows me the correct way - that's super great. However, I would like to see how you determine the wrong way and what you do about it. You could probably very easily (purposely) sew the seam incorrectly without anyone noticing. Then you would show us what the incorrect result looks like, the cause and how you fix it. Perfection is great but it is imperfection that I can sometimes learn best from. Thanks!

SO true!! When I first started quilting I would see that and then rely on it! Then couldn’t figure out why I had problems with my blocks!

My first video watching you. It was extremely helpful. Do you do any machine embroidery videos? I have to learn how to use my machine and no instructors nearby. I feel you are the one that could help me out.

Thank you so much for showing me this! I know how important seam allowance is (I have made a few projects where this has unfortunately been an issue😢) and mine is getting better the more I sew, but the tips you shared (some of which I knew) will help me not only improve my allowances, but be able to check them after I have completed a few! Thank you again!

Great video! Another way to get a quarter inch seam is to order the Juki 1/4” foot with the guide on it. You may want to try one

Great tip because that’s what I have and refer to in my video! But I like to sew with a scant 1/4” so the seam guide helps. Also, I made this video for anyone using any machine 😍 thanks again!
