@@ruben-xt8hm this may not be the exact genre but it gets you similar stuff. Ambient drum and bass. You may also find breakbeat and breakcore good if you like that technical drum stuff.

Yeah to second Asaklair, I dunno what the exact differences are between drum'n'bass, breakbeat, breakcore, etc. are - but this'd be in that realm. To me anything that's 170+ bpm and leans on the "Amen Break" drum sample I just call drum'n'bass 🤷

First of all, thank you! Also, literally half the cymbals in this video are now completely shredded to the point where they don't work at all anymore - and the ones I've replaced them with are now on their way out, too 😆 I'll check those out, I'm especially intrigued by kiddy pool, I'd love to hear what pre-machine girl sounds like. I've kinda stepped back from making these vids both cuz I'm borderline homeless and need to do other stuff to pay rent, but also because I've just been less inspired lately to make these, plus live music's been kicking back up again and I've been really busy playing my own music at shows IRL. BUT I've been starting to get inspired again to make these, so I'll definitely check those out!

No doubt, you are mega talented! Although I said I'm not a drummer, I'm almost positive that cymbals being torn to bits has got to be a sign of a technique that is not to be fucked with! haha Worst part about the side project of MG is how shortlived it was, but at least it gave life to none other than the machine itself (: Also, no shame in that, you gotta do what you must to make it & that typically entails putting yourself first. Plus, it's usually in those bleak times wherein we strike creative inspirational gold of sort. In any case, it's great you're exercising your skills at live shows again as that in itself must be therapeutic. Big love to you & thank you for sharing your gift ❤️

I cringe at some of my older vids, like my "No Love" one, where I have too big and unbroken of cymbals, and they overpower the sound (although that's more due to me over hitting them, really)...that said, playing broken cymbals will make them continue to break (duh) and gradually become too weak to use. I played a house show last weekend where I probably should've brought some unbroken cymbals, because the sweaty bodies in the room absorbed a *lot* of drum/cymbal sounds, but I had only brought cracked ones (whoops). Anyway, here I've got: Istanbul Mehmet hi hats, some sort of Bosphorus stacked on top of an unknown China cymbal, a 20" Zildjian K Hybrid Ride, and an unknown broken vintage Sabian ride stacked on top of another unknown China cymbal. The Zildjian and Bosphorus are no more, as they've disintegrated into nothingness. And about 40% of my top hi hat has broken off, but it's still hanging in there. Also, if you want to spend the money, some cymbals while brand new still sound great and are not too overpowering, because they're extra thin (that Bosphorus cymbal started like that). But, if you're a heavy hitter, those ones will break faster, so it's kinda a give-and-take / pro-vs-con thing to weigh out. But I like the sound of thinner cymbals and broken cymbals more than thick ones or unbroken ones. And you can always deaden cymbals with tape, but if you overdo that, they sound kinda like garbage cans.

Great questions, Andrew 1) I actually record with only one mic, pointed at the snare. I have a couple more mics, but not enough to mic all of the drums (and also not much experience multi-tracking by myself/without engineers) 2) the duct tape helps mute/deaden the ring of the snare drum Bonus) my cymbals are all broken and cracked, and when that happens, I experiment with stacking them on top of each other - instead of using a traditional crash cymbal, two of my cymbals here (the ones on the left and right) are stacks of broken crashes stacked atop broken China cymbals. My ride is also super cracked but not stacked on anything Edit: I guess the hi hats count as cymbals too - they are *not* cracked or broken, so they've got that fully round (O) shape

@@karlfagerstrom I don't know much about drumming so i don't know which songs are even coverable. I like goreshit be cause he uses very complex beat patterns which sound chaotic at first but a second later they make a lot of sense. I think a good example for a typical goreshit song is "benzo (with me eternal)" i don't know if its too fast to be played on drums. Another example is "looming shadow of a tree long gone". I just thought about a song which is a bit similar to this one "tochi - Ascension". Don't feel obligated to cover any of the above songs.

Did O'er the Flood about a month ago and editing angles now, but I would love to also try Benzo or Burn this moment (although they're both suuuuuper fast yikes) edit: that said, challenges get me out of bed in the morning, so it's not out of the question

I mean, I didn't break it this way on purpose, but yeah - I *do* like the sound of broken cymbals. But this cymbal started whole, and I broke it, and kept using it in its broken state.

@rearedrain9722 don't do that - if you like the sound of broken cymbals, buy some *pre-broken* - you can get them for dirt cheap or even *free.* A nice, unbroken cymbal is easily $400. So, while I do break cymbals (and keep playing them), I also get pre-broken ones through bartering. Some are so lightly broken that they function as completely unbroken cymbals and I *still* get them for free/cheap/bartering. My recent Lexycat and kfcmc covers use a ride with a crack in it you can't even tell is there (it's too resonant for me to use a lot of the time, tbh)

You clearly respect the material while still breathing new life into this track with your skills as a drummer and as a musician. I'm genuinely stoked this showed up in my recommended after sobbing over Sewerslvt music for the last few years. I've never been able to play anything myself but I've sat down and played around with drums before and it's the only instrument that like, made sense to me. Maybe one day I'll pick up a set myself. You've inspired me with this.

I play drums, trumpet, piano, guitar, and bass (obviously I'm better/more well-rounded at some instruments than others), and I can confidently say playing drums is the best out of all of those for your mind, body, and soul. Although maybe I'm biased, but still. Also almost all the coolest people I've met in various music scenes have been other drummers 🤷 tl;Dr I hope you do play at some point.
