Finally, a tutorial that makes perfect sense. I'd like to add an inside pocket for a men's tailored waistcoat. Is there a way to skip the edge stitching? ❤
@UniversityOfFashion
@UniversityOfFashion 11 месяцев назад
Yes, you don’t have to edgestitch around the pocket slit, but you will need to give it a very hard press so it stays in place. I am glad the tutorial makes perfect sense. Check out other lessons and more at UniversityofFashion.com!

We received a comment this AM which has since been removed. It basically commented: ": I would prefer not to see the seam allowances after the bottom pocket bag is sewn to the top pocket bag." Our response to this comment is : Most often a lining would hide the inner construction of a welt pocket. You could also choose to sew a Hong Kong binding around the raw edges of the pocket seam allowance."

The welts are CUT 6 1/2" long (NOT marked 6 1/2"). Then the welt pocket stitching marks are made 1/2" in on both sides. These marking match up with the 5 1/2" marking on the body. Hopefully that helps clear up your confusion.

If the marking on main fabric was 5 1/2" and on the welt 6 1/2" how can they line up even you said go in 1/2" on each so that makes the welt now 6 and the bottom at 5 1/2 I'm confused
@Freiburgerpdx
@Freiburgerpdx 6 лет назад
You mark 1/2" in an both ends of each welt. Those marks line up with the 5 1/12" markings for the body. Basically, when lining up the welt pieces they need to hang over 1/2" on each end of where the slit will be cut in the body.

holy hell, I can't get the fabric to not pucker a little at the corners when i turn the welt into the wrong side. I have done it 3 times. It keeps happening.
@UniversityOfFashion
@UniversityOfFashion 3 года назад
The key to getting nice corners is to be sure to snip into the corners correctly and make sure that your stitches end at the same place on both the top and the bottom of the welt. You can also try pressing the V section flat, that helps.

you say to fold the the welt in half then mark them a quarter. then when you were sewing them it was confusing because it looks even and then it wasn't no longer folded in half
@UniversityOfFashion
@UniversityOfFashion 7 лет назад
Hi, Gitana, The 1/4” that is instructed to be marked is for the seam allowance on the width side of the welt opening The 1/2” is seam allowance is on the ends of the welts. Team UoF

A confusing item in the video are the two pocket bags pieces. In the beginning it says to cut a 5.5" "top" pocket back piece and a 4.5" "bottom" pocket bag piece. Later in the video when the pocket is assembled, it just says to sew the "pocket bag" to the pocket facing and then to the top welt edge. Then to sew the "lower pocket bag" to the lower welt. The naming of the pieces is different and although it seems like the "bottom" pocket piece would be the same as the "lower" pocket piece, it isn't. The 4.5" "bottom" piece gets sewn to the facing and the 5.5" "top" pocket piece gets sewn to the lower welt.
@francescapurvin7903
@francescapurvin7903 6 лет назад
You are correct! The 4.5" "bottom" piece gets sewn to the facing and the 5.5" "top" pocket piece gets sewn to the lower welt. Sorry for the confusion.

It’s not clear if the folded edges or the raw edges abut in the center.
@sarahc409
@sarahc409 6 лет назад
folded goes towards center
@Freiburgerpdx
@Freiburgerpdx 6 лет назад
no, the raw edges go toward the center (meet along the center line) when stitching them down. It looked to me in the video that it was the folded edges together and did it that way and then had to rip it all out and redo it because it was wrong.

The fold of the welt is on the opening or lip of the welt.

When I did a Ladies Tailoring certification course at FIT 7 years ago we learned this to be welt pockets. My professor was an old Italian guy who came from a line of tailors. He never mentioned this to be by any other name.

Now that I know how to do it this technique they use has pros and cons. That top stitch idea is terrible, that spoils the cleaness of pocket. The bag should be professionally finished so as not to show raw edges
@UniversityOfFashion
@UniversityOfFashion 6 лет назад
The edges of the pocket bag could either be overlocked or clean-finished depending on your choice of finish.
