A tip for you guys about the Shirring: when you close the side seam on whatever garment you are making (bodice, sleeve), sew the elastic tread in a spiral way all lines at once, start at one line on top or bottom, then when you finish the circle of the first line, instead of stopping, removing the garment, pulling out, cut the thread, putting back in, starting all over, and repeat, you just make a move from one line to another without cutting the tread, just continuing sewing, making a ''sliding''(? lol) to the next line non stopping, and then make a spiral. Get it? This way you don't have to cut the tread everytime or stop sewing everytime and turn the piece :) oh and at the end, when ironing, the ''slide'' will be no noticible, since the fabric shrinks and you will be using a thread that is the same color of the fabric. (i hope it makes sense what i say, i don't write english that well, and writing things it is harder to visualize than showing in a video, but i tried to describe the best i could)
@silverwater211
@silverwater211 Год назад
Question: When doing the spirals, how the "sliding" is made? Going diagonally or along the side seam with angles, or lifting the foot and going to the next line? Me too, English is not my language.
@alisonmaschmeier8850
@alisonmaschmeier8850 5 месяцев назад
So basically when you reach the end of a row of shirring, you would keep the needle in the fabric, lift presser foot, pivot fabric, put presser foot and sew to the next line, pivot again and make your next row. I don't like doing this because it will also pull up on the fabric due to using elastic thread to get to each row. I don't recommend this.

this is how I do my shirring too!! so much faster, and you don't lose tension on the bobbin this way

I love watching your videos and am so impressed by them. Therefore I'm so happy that I can finally give you a hint. When you're using your seam ripper to open a button hole, put a pin in the other end of the buttonhole (before you rip). That will stop you tearing any further than you mean to. :)
@darihernandezstudio
@darihernandezstudio 2 года назад
Great tip!! I use a buttonhole cutter to open the buttonhole but this tip is excellent. I know many people use their seam ripper instead.

That turned out really nicely! And you are very good at showing how you do! May I suggest that you put a little bit of interfacing behind the fabric befor you make the buttonhole? Alternatively a bit of scrap fabric. It will make it all neater and less risk of fraying in the wash. Another suggestion if one is a bit nervous about shirring is to just make another casing for an elastic instead.

I love that you can customize this. I have stayed away from the milkmaid patterns because of my bust size. I am on the larger size but saw that you tried it on and checked to see where the shirring should begin under the bust. Brilliant! ❤️❤️❤️❤️

This is a great tutorial and the first one I could truly grasp. Have been wanting to make a dress like this for years and now I can! I have a suggestion and a few questions. Suggestion: Use interfacing or another piece of fabric at buttonhole for stability. Questions: 1. Why only 1 buttonhole for the tie? 2. Why don't you press your seams open? 3. What is the advantage to using CM instead of IN? I myself hate CM LOL. My questions are out of pure curiosity, no rudeness intended. I just love to understand how people think when it comes to sewing projects so I can improve on my skills.

If you have a pretty fabric like this that you want to conserve/if you don’t have much fabric to work with one thing you can do is make pocket facings with the pretty fabric instead of the entire pocket. I do this all the time and it means you can use whatever scrap fabric you want for the main pocket pieces
