I just have to say, out of all the tutorials I've seen, commented on, and attempted to follow, yours seems to be the most detailed visually. The instructions are clear and the visuals align with the spoken word. I always feel the need to comment these things for others who might be ADHD or autistic. We're always staring at one section of the instructions no one else seems to struggle with, but have no issues with anything else. But I found that you pointed to and explained everything that needed explaining. And you left out what seemingly didn't really need to be bothered with. Thank you.
Thank you for such a lovely comment! It is wonderful to know that people find my work useful. I strive to provide clear, informative and relaxing sewing videos, and it makes my heart swell with happiness to know I've achieved this to some degree. ❤
I never knew that listening to sewing instructions could feel so much like listening to a fairy godmother reading a fairytale. Thank you for the incredibly relaxing narration.
this is insanely amazing. the inside of this waistcoat is like staring into the face of God. I literally paused the video and yelled "NO. IT'S WITCHCRAFT" when you showed it on screen. it's so clean it doesn't feel real
A matching pencil skirt would look so fantastic with this waistcoat! Love the textures of the velvet snd the corduroy and you couldn’t have chosen a better color. Also your hair is so pretty and I’d be lying if I didn’t want to know your secret to such beautiful, voluminous curls... 😁
Thank you very much! (And the secret to the curls is Poison Apple Hair Setting Spray, a good curling iron, pins to keep everything up until it cools and sets, and brushing it out with a soft brush!)
Beautiful waistcoat. It gives one hope when sewing for intensely curvy girls. That tiny ribcage is so easy to lose when negotiating amply curves above and below. Thank you for this!
That is glorious. It looks amazing. Welt pockets are magic. All this fabric disappears suddenly inside and there is a wonderfully secret little pocket. I also adore the capelet you are wearing. Thanks so much for sharing.
They can be a bit of a fiddle, but worth the effort of putting them in! I did a couple of practices on scrap before I made the real pockets, and that helped get my brain and hands into the right mode.
I saw this pattern on etsy a few days ago while looking for hobbit-y vests. I must say, even after watching your video that I am still intimidated, so I will try a simpler design until I get the nerve. :P
Good luck with your other projects and when you're ready, good luck with the waistcoat! I highly recommend that you make at least one mockup, and feel free to ask any questions you have. 🙂
I just finished cutting and marking out all my pieces for this pattern! This video has been super helpful and I had a wonderful time watching and learning from you :)
Gorgeous waistcoat! I'm about to start making this one myself, so I wanted to ask: why didn't you use any horsehair canvas interlining? Was the corduroy is stiff enough on it's own? I'm using a stiffer jacquard fabric for my fashion fabric and would love to avoid ordering the canvas if I don't have to😅
Thank you! I was limited to materials in my stash for this project. As I didn't have any horsehair canvas (and the corduroy was relatively solid, while the velvet was very floppy) I decided to use some leftover coutil as my strength fabric, and fused it to the velvet for the facing. I am pretty happy with how it sits, although if I were to make this pattern again, I think I'd stick closer to the instructions and use canvas interlining. That being said: your waistcoat is yours! If you're ok with the idea of a softer collar (maybe the roll won't be as smooth, more of a fold) and don't want to use canvas, give it a go! If you love it, great! If you're not completely happy with it, it becomes a wearable mockup and try canvas next time. Best of luck and please let me know how you go!
If I’m making this but not planning on wearing a corset, do I just go up one size? I can’t really find any videos where it gives this specific answer! Help please :)
If you're not planning on wearing a corset under it, then I suggest you use your uncorseted measurements when picking a size. For me, a corset doesn't change my size, but changes my proportions (I.e. my waist is smaller, but my bust and shoulders are not). I'd still strongly recommend making a mock up and working out precisely what fits you. Best of luck! Feel free to contact me on Instagram if you have specific fitting questions once you're underway.
