Let your sewing machine do the work for you and lose those gathering stitches! This is my favorite way to set in a sleeve: in the round, using the feed dogs to do the ease for me. Cuz ease in sewing is awesome.
COOL STUFF USED IN THIS VIDEO:
Clear 6 inch ruler: amzn.to/3qQSN9N
Long pins: amzn.to/30rLMB6
Magnetic pincushion: amzn.to/3cdAzXs
Pink cutting mat: amzn.to/3kDFTrH
Stork clippers: amzn.to/3kDJsxQ
Pro seam ripper (simliar): amzn.to/3osH3Ht
Fabric is an outdoor paradise of birds from Madame Joann’s ‪@joannstores‬
Pattern is (vintage) Butterick 4363-and it’s a good one!

When Marcy says not to put your finger under the presser foot, she's not kidding. Years ago, I usd to think that it would be crazy that a sewing machine could sew through a finger. Then, in a moment of inattention, my machine did just that, puncturing my finger and my fingernail. Ouch! All is well with said finger now, but just don't. It is much worse than slamming your finger in the car door!

Wow, learned so many things today! For one, that I don't remember ever hearing or seeing the arm sleeve called "armsyes" before. (P.s. Google doesn't think that's a word, either!) If I had, I certainly would have tried to pronounce it "arms, YES!" because I'm silly like that. 🥸 I think I've avoided sewing sleeves in the past for that whole gathering stitches thing, but now that you've shown me how much easier it can be, I've run out of excuses! Now I just need a tutorial about doing the crotch seam on a pair of pants... Maybe you could film yourself making some matching holiday pajama pants for yourself and Rob? I'm sure that would be so easy peasy for you, maybe even as a video short or something? ☺️ Lots of love to you both from the Philly suburbs! 🫂

@Jen_S_Hassler1258 2 года назад
@@handmadeharriells just watched this again now and it came up after your newest shirring top video. I don't remember if I saw your reply or not, BUT yes, I was definitely thinking a crotch seam without a zipper, as in a pair of PJ pants or "joggers" (formerly known simply as "sweatpants.") 🤦‍♀️ I can never seam 😆 to get those right, even following the directions (though i do have significant trouble following written directions which is probably why I have such a hard time with it!) I've tried all sorts of "hacks" to make it easier, but that always ends up an even bigger mess. I would have loved to have made myself some new shorts for this 🥵 summer, but I never found the courage to try. Maybe I'll just turn some more old jeans into skirts instead. 😉

Another rescue question around the Armscye - at those pucker points we will rip out… how far forward and back do you recommend? I can’t tell if I ripped too much or not enough because I had to re-do two of them over twice. Thanks Marcy!
@handmadeharriells
@handmadeharriells 2 года назад
I usually take about 2 stitches out before and after the pucker. Since you’re going over those sections on the second line of stitching (on the actual seam line of 5/8ths) it should be easier to ease the excess in at those points. But, if your sleeve cap has a lot of excess ease built in it’ll be a bit trickier! 💗
