This was very helpful. I use two size threads. Now, thanks to your video, I use two bobbins set at the perfect tension for each thread.

I just got a vintage arrow sewing machine for a steel and got it home and noticed someone put a different upper thread tentioner on it and the origanal was in a bag , so i put the original back on because the bobbin tention was so tight i could hardley pull the thread through , set my bobbin and its working like a dream , perfect example of someone not knowing how to set a balanced stitch , im new to sewing machines but watched my mom use singers growing up and now i buy 50s era machines restore and display them and all are in great working condition and i use them , thank you for posting this , im absorbing as much good knowledge as i can 👍👍

That's awesome! None of us are born knowing this, so I try to pass on as much info as I can. Our vintage machine cleaning course is about to launch at www.sewingdocacademy.com, it covers inside and out of all vintage machines, not just one model. These machines are the best, no modern machine will ever compare!

at 1:15 you say this applies to all drop-in cases. however earlier in the video you say drop in cases will be covered in a different tutorial, and this one is for front and side-loading cases. I assume this is just a word mix-up? Thank you so much for this video, it's great to have the information so forefront without a lot of extra banter.

I took your advise on doing the drop test every time I put in a different bobbin thread. This has solved a major head ache for me .. trying to get even pulls top/bottom on my stitches. I usually just tweak the bobbin screw to get the drop right. Then I "may" have to go a half number on the top adjustment and my stitches are perfect! Yours is the better explanation on adjusting the bobbin I've seen. Thanks a butch! Give yourself a hug for me. :o)

I CAN'T THANK YOU ENOUGH! I restored my grandma's 1967 158 series Kenmore. I have the original manual, but the pictures are hard to understand. I have a Viking with a top loading bobbin, and that was my first machine. Do you have a video on upper tension on a vintage Kenmore? From what I understand, the late 1960's and 70's models had pretty much the same assemblies. I feel like the tension is too high on the dial. My bobbin with all-purpose thread was too high and I had to turn a half to achieve the "drop test."
@SewingDocAcademy

Hi Alycia, I'm so glad this helped! I don't have videos specific to that, but I'll see what I can do! We are about to launch a ton of classes online that will address similar issues. Our website is www.sewingdocacademy.com, make sure you sign up for the newsletter so you'll know when they are available! I don't mean to try and sell you on anything, but this issue comes up a lot, and we will be addressing it!

My bobbin case as a back lash or check spring load to it. So when I try to tighten and do the drop test the bobbin pops out. I want to use the 60 Wt bobbin thread. What am I doing wrong. PS when I sew my fabric will gather up and I can pulled the thread out.

Just came across this video. Hope it’s not too late to ask a question. I have a Phaff 7570. When I bounce the bobbin case, the bobbin always slips out. The thread stays in the case, but only the bobbin slips out. Am I doing something wrong, or is the case too big? I am using the recommended size Phaff brand plastic bobbins.

@SewingDocAcademy
@SewingDocAcademy 2 года назад
Are you certain that it is threaded correctly? If it's missing a thread guide, is threaded incorrectly, or has issues at the upper tension assembly or check spring, you will have many different issues. I do have a free on-deman workshop (totally free, no strings, I promise) that walk you through how to use your Featherweight. You may want to start there to be sure you have everything setup correctly. If that doesn't help, it sounds like it may need service. Here's the link to the FREE workshop: www.learnmachineservice.com/courses/how-to-use-your-featherweight

My bobbin just drops, dosent hold at all even when I tighten it
@SewingDocAcademy
@SewingDocAcademy 3 года назад
Is it tightened all the way? If it is, that means there is either something stuck under that spring (lint, maybe rust even) preventing it from sitting correctly. You can CAREFULLY unscrew the screws (one or two, however many yours has) to clean out under and put it back together. Just make sure you take it apart over a bowl or something because the screws are tiny, and that you remember which screw goes in which hole, because it does matter.
