How refreshing to see a sewist so stylish, well groomed and coiffed😀 most sewists on RU-vid look like tired housewives, unfortunately. Thank you for caring. You’re inspiring

This is the absolute BEST video 📹 I've seen for hemming jeans. Ive watched countless videos on this and yours is the method I will now try. I tried another that failed and I broke my very first needle. I am so greatful you shared this with the world. I am 5'2" and have an inseam of about 28" so I always have to hem my 👖. I started sewing in hopes that one day I could hem and save $$$. Now I might be able to do that bc of YOU [and the very kind woman that gave me a wonderful machine. ] I am truly greatful for the sewing community and how much everyone is willing to share their love and education. What a treat!

I really appreciated you telling us what tension to set for the top stitch thread and the tool to deal with sewing over the thick seam. I also appreciated how much care you took with your appearance. I have been using Phaff sewing machines for 25 years and I love to work with their servers too.

Thank you Margaret for the excellent video. I do alterations and have used the method you have shown here many times, I have also done the "Hollywood hem" which maintains the original hem which is more work. I have found that using the method you have shown here works great. I use a hammer to pound the thick seams into place BEFORE hemming as it helps to flatten the thick seam so it is easier to stitch over. I also use some fine sandpaper on the edge fold of the hem after is stitched to give it a "weathered worn distressed" look that some clients like. I have found this better than trying to maintain the original hem unless someone specifically asks for the original hem. Maintaining the original hem adds more bulk to the hem area causing it to often curl up and out after laundering.

Wow, I thought I knew how to hem jeans, having done many over the years, but this video has just changed forever how I do them! Never realised I could/should use thicker thread for the top stitching. I've always colour matched but used my usual weight thread, hemmed in one take and then noticed it didn't look quite right, now I know why. Next pair will get proper top stitching on 2nd time round, and as overlong denim shorts are next in line, it will show more, so am very happy to have found this video in time! Nor did I realise I should adjust tension for thicker thread, though logical now it's been pointed out. Only downside, I now have to trek to shop to get yet more cotton, same colour but thicker...Thanks for this very thorough video :)

@SewingMachineWarehouse
@SewingMachineWarehouse 8 лет назад
I have been asked many times, 'why do I sew the hem twice when I could do it in one go?' The reason I do it this way, is to avoid putting the thicker thread through my bobbin. I would have to adjust my bobbin tension for this one purpose and then put it back to normal for regular sewing. This is not advisable and causes too much stress. Doing it with matching thread for the first pass allows you to do it from the inside and if you sew it crookedly, it can't be seen. When you turn it right side out, and use your topstitching thread, you can be more accurate because the hem has been stitched already and this row is for effect only. This step can omitted if you so desire, but the topstitching is done to give it a professional finish. Thank you for the comments. Happy Sewing! - Margaret.

Thank you, I used to hem jeans & never knew a Clearance Foot existed, must look out for one. Before I started to machine, I would give a few gentle taps with a light hammer on a wooden board to the heavy seem to soften the fold & like you Walk the needle for few stitches. I like the idea of stitching twice. Top stitching lovely.

I like the idea of double sewing however I've never done that, im going to give it a try! Just an FYY for you and other folks out there, I do put the wrong side under the presser foot and position where I want the stiching to be near the turned up edge. I then place a piece of painters tape over my plate right next to what will be the bottom of the hem. I remove the jeans turning them rightside out. I then place the jeans back under the presser foot, wrong side down, and hem with jean thread. Dark thread in bobhin. I following the painter's tape guide i put down. Because it " longer" then the markings on my plate I find it easier to follow a strait line! Also I have found at the local fabric store "blue jean" thread. I dont recall what manufacture carried it. Just one more hint and I'll leave. If I dont have heavy jean thread or the right color, I have treaded two spools of regular thread to match the previous stitch color, sometimes mixing and matching. Works great! Have a gread day everyone

I want to add that I love that you cut off the original hem. Although this is scary, it is very helpful when hemming a lot off of a wide leg jean or boot cut as you then dont need to adjust for the change in the size difference which is a pain. This is so much simpler.
