That Elizabethan Bodice Generator brings back so many memories. I used it, (or an earlier version of it) circa 1999 to make my very first renfaire bodice. I had zero sewing training and still managed to make a decent enough "pair of bodies" that some of the staff thought I was an employee. Sure, there are better resources for beginners now, but back then it was a miraculous find and helped me get started down the path of historical costuming and then, later on, cosplay. =)
ah no I definitely dont think it's bad by any means and I definitely appreciate that it was around when there was such a lack of resources 20 years ago! I would just worry that it might put a beginner off of corset and stay making and that would be sad when there are a lot of comprehensive and more instructional patterns available now!
Love the addition of the pointed ears, it all looks so cute! The green binding tape around the edges was such a great addition, I really like the subtle color change. I totally get the burn out when doing a project of that size. Hopefully that spark ignites again, definitely don't force it.
aw haha thank youu I want to be an elf all the time 😊 I've been working on it at a much slower pace and that seems to be helping 😅 i think once I'm done with the embroidery machine I'll feel better about it, I'm just so tired of staring at the embroidery machine and how loud it is rip

I am always torn for the ren faire with being a lady knight or some kind of ethereal queen figure and the burning desire to make a stay like this into a faux armor look like your previous video to combine the two is very strong right now.

@@moth.faerie Oh, nice! I'm making mine for semi-daily wear, as a replacement for a bra, and am trying mostly to figure out the bone placement and the length on my own body. Or whether to have bones at all, and just do cording instead. I hope yours turn out how you like them!
First of all, cottage goth is the best thing I've ever heard of. These stays are just like, aesthetically my jam. I thought the pattern generator was really neat and I'm looking forward to seeing more corset/stays pattern overviews!! Second, getting burnt out on Frau is totally fair! That's one hell of a project and as much as I'm looking forward to seeing her done, it wouldn't be fun to watch if you're not enjoying what you're doing!! Take all the time you need! Can't wait to see what else you have coming!

I felt like during grad school I lost some of the love I had for sewing and costuming because it was so pressure and I felt really burnt out, but obviously the goal of graduation really kept me going. I definitely dont want to feel burnt out again because now there's no benchmark goal in sight for the end (and I wouldnt' want there to be, I'm hoping I can keep doing youtube for a while!) but that means I'm trying super hard not to burn myself out! I really appreciate you and everyone else who has been so encouraging about letting myself take a little more time with projects and doing them at a pace that is hopefully sustainable for me!

yes!! i got them recently and they made me feel so cute I had to wear them for a reveal 😊 i have the worst of both worlds with the cats - one black and one white means I never have clothes that will blend into their fur 😅
I’m actually in the middle of using this pattern to make a pair of ren faire stays! I just finished my first cardboard mockup and it turned out pretty well, if a tad large.

Please hear me out... I do not understand a word of what you are saying when it comes to sewing, but i get exposed to sewing anyway. To me it does not look like anything is square on the paper and it looks like you are just cutting the paper like the boy people call Edward Scissor hands. A whole bunch of paper flying through the air like his tree leaves and womans hair. I am in complete awe over your mock ups turning into such amazing creations. I cannot get get enough. All that and a beautiful young lady, with a song bird voice. I do learn things like fabrics and habadashery, how to use it and why or why not. One of these days I will buckle down and create my own pattern and make an amazing corset of my own. I know this is an older video but I hope you get this message. Thank you for the inspiration you fill my creative mind with. I adore your spirit. Definitely glad you are doing projects that keep your joy going while you work on Frau. This should be fun--not something that bogs you down! When you finish Frau I will be happy to ooh and ah, but for now I'm happy to see the other projects too!

My inner goth is flailing over the velvet stays, so lovely! Also just wanted to say I genuinely enjoy all your videos, so however works best for you to release projects I am happy with. I am enjoying the current mix of big project and smaller ones, there's the instant gratification of seeing the finished garment straight away in the smaller projects, plus there's also the anticipation in the background for the big one!

Right!! I’m usually more lax with those 1/8” increments on something loose like a chemise but with tight fitting clothes it makes such a difference. How is the leather working going?? I want to get back to it hopefully soon! Tool rolls sound like a great idea
@@moth.faerie Those 1/8"'s are everything. Sneaky little measurements... The leather work is going good. I'm at the flailing about stage. Apparently I enjoy splashing about in the shallow end of the pool? It's one of those things where it's both easier than it looks and harder. But the tool rolls are my starting point. Because I found all of these vintage tools on the ebay (the Singer is a 99K from 1915, so spot the trend). And now I want them to look spectacular while they are kept safe for another 100 years of use... My theory is that tool rolls are the chance to show off what you've learned. And an excuse to practice one's saddle stich. And a way to physically limit how many more tools I can buy. Because I've bought enough... I'm doing one role for the carving tools - including the knife and stylus. The back of the design is a chance to practice some Sheridan Style flowers and Acanthus leaves. With a great big Sunflower incorporated into the design in honour of Ukraine. The second one is basically a three-fold-up, up-sized version of a Hussif for the awls, and edgers, and round knife and the other nice toys. I've got God Kids to indoctrinate, I mean, invite, into leatherwork. It's amazing how far a good tool roll will get you into the conversation... Hope you Kids are doing well down there.
I remember sitting in on a panel, years and years ago, about how to make corsets, which was mostly about materials, but this vid was so fun and helped me understand how the pieces worked together. Thanks
I loved the video, very good review. I'm personally battling regency stays (laughing moon pattern and before a few self drafted versions) and I can't get them to sit right so if you are planning on making stays for your regency outfit that would be perfect timing. If not I'm still going to happily watch the construction of the gown itself. And watching tailoring is always like listening to poetry
Oh these are so beautiful!! I really have to learn how to make stays and corsets! For living history and modern use. But I can barely handle a sewing machine and I'm not sure if I'm up for hand stitching that :D So probably will have to wait until I have time to learn how to use a sewing machine better. As excited I am to see the finished "Frau", I totally understand that you need a break from it. Take it and focus on things that bring you more joy :)

I found you yesterday and now have watched all your Alice and Frau videos lol. In addition to being an amazing costumer, you're such a great filmmaker. I love these!! I made very similiar pair of stays out of blue velvet I salvages from an old shirt over the holidays! I love the way velvet looks! I modified the butterrisk B4669 pattern. I'm addictd to making stays/laced bodices!
oh this is so pretty!! (i know i say this like every video but the colours and fabrics are very beautiful). i'd like to make a pair of stays too someday, but not sure if i'm brave enough to try the generator. we'll see in the summer when i have time... and getting burnt out on Frau,, i can imagine, because it's so much work. just take your time and do whatever seems the best idea to you, the "small" projects are also great to watch!
haha i still appreciate it even if it's repetitive! I would definitely start with a pattern that is a little more comprehensive than the pattern generator, if you're willing to purchase a pattern the butterick one I mentioned and used in the renfaire corset video and redthreaded's stays patterns are pretty good!
I really liked seeing your thought process as you adjusted the pattern! Maybe if you combine the stays with a dark green/lacy skirt, it might look a bit more cottagecore and a bit less oktoberfest? Anyway, I love the result!

you should definitely give it a try! the butterick pattern I mentioned also makes a fairly similar shape, though it's a little shorter than these. that's a fairly quick pattern alteration to make tho!
You're so clear with the pattern drafting! I'm kind of just getting started on my whole journey and my overeager self wants to jump straight into self-drafting a corset. Mayyybe I should learn how to alter an existing pattern first? Nah, you make it look like so much fun so I guess I'm going for it! XD

@@moth.faerie I actually do have a question (more related to my attempt at Red Threaded's 1750-1770's Georgian Stays though)! I realized that I need to increase the waist by about 4" since my waist is in a different size but I am having troubles visualizing how to go about it. I originally was pivoting at the bust to add space at some of the seams but I think that changes the hip measurement (which fits me as is)? Do you have any techniques or advice for this pattern alteration?
@@SewlockHolmes hm i'm not sure i 100% understand what you're saying but hopefully i can help anyways! depending on where you need the extra width you can add to all the seams evenly or just split it between a couple seams where you need more space, but either way - figure out what seams you're changing and divid your 4" (2" for half the pattern) between those seams. then measure that directly out from the waist, and blend your bust and hip lines up into that mark

Ah I'm glad I've helped you find inspiration! I have a masters in costume production from CMU School of Drama, but my undergrad degree was actually neuroscience! The costume production degree is a three year program so we had three years of costume history, plus most of my sewing classes had quite a bit of historical context so even though my schooling wasn't actually in historical costuming I got a really good background from various different professors. I also took design classes which were optional for my focus but I've always been interested in design! Tbh it was STRESSFUL and previously coming from the medical/pharmacy field it felt kind of silly that everyone treated show deadlines as so life or death when we really weren't doing anything so dire or urgent that we should have been sacrificing our sleep and general well-being for it, but that was the really pervasive attitude. However, despite all of that, it was a massive fast track in learning all about costume production, design, and history. I don't doubt that I would have learned most of the skills I got from grad school along the way of a costuming career, but it would have taken decades rather than three years. This is what I want my every day clothes I want to make my wardrobe to be Goth the only thing is I have hot flashes so most of the clothes will be in thin fabric plus I have a belly that looks like I am having a baby but it is my weak belly muscles

And my ribs stick out like a ( A ) shape and it is hard to get my bust number, and waist number, I have to take my under bust as my waist because my belly is 50 or 60 on different days

Hey amazing lady! Your channel is amazing and I'm learning so much about sewing from it! I have a question on sewing this. When you sew your lining together, do you sew it a bit smaller than the outside fabric of the stays so that it doesn't bubble? If so, how much smaller do you usually sew it?
Thanks! Yes I sew the lining slightly smaller but like just barely - so like if you have your stitch lines marked on both the lining and outer fabric, I sew slightly to the outside of the line of the outer fabric and slightly to the inside of the line of the lining
For something like this where I’m working in the ease for the whole piece at once I do a little more, when I’m doing the easing on one panel at a time for a multi paneled garment I’ll do what I explained in the other comment

I was a little confused when you were talking about that second step in flatlining (18:53). Are you tacking the seam allowance down while it's folded over so you can stitch the seams by hand?
Not to stitch the seams by hand but yes to tacking the seam allowance down! I try to grab on both sides of the stitching line so I can make sure there’s enough extra fabric at the stitching line

I love watching these videos- its helping me make my first corset! Also, I’m assuming this isn’t stretch velvet. I wonder if you can use stretch and if that would like cause more issues or if would help prevent the need to cut the velvet pieces to be larger than the coutil? You could just stretch it?
i'm glad it's helping! i would avoid using stretch velvet if possible, but i think if you were to use it anyways you should pretend it's regular velvet and still roll pin it otherwise it may stretch unevenly

I feel like you hit half way between CottageGoth and HobbitGoth and I *Adore that* I think it's the HobbitGoth that's giving the octoberfest vibes, mainly because hobbits are all about layering and food and drink and making merry. But it's really lovely. Seriously. Also! I love that you're wearing the chemise you made, it's so pretty and works perfectly for this. Is the lace scratchy? I'm always terrified of scratchy lace, which is why I've avoided many a lace thing so far.
ooooh hobbitgoth, that's a good one!! the really big lace is a little scratchy but thats kind of my own fault for how i digitized it 😅 but it's not scratchy enough that i notice it when i'm wearing it! just when i'm putting it on
