just an add for the viewers. (good tips for most fabric from the OP!! love it) Kite makers use either double stick tape or kids restickable washable glue sticks to hold stuff like rip-stop nylon etc.. or other fabrics that you can't pin.

Having returned to sewing after a break of 30ish years, and using a new sewing machine, I was stopped in my tracks the other day when my machine started chewing up the slippery lightweight fabric of the back of the waistcoat I'm making. Your tips are brilliant - the little bit of Selotape, new 70 needles, silk thread, tightening of the tension (to zero), and a slightly LONGER stitch have done the trick. Thank you. I'm really grateful.

Thank you so much! I’m newbie/beginner who has took on a huge ( well huge to me!) project, I was asked to alter a floor length three layer wedding gown into a high and low and to put a material extension in and turn the zipper in the back into a lace up, I agreed because of the couple trying to have a nice wedding and their budget is kind of tight with having two families of kids merging as one, my anxiety is off the charts but I’m determined to do this for them and do the best job I can and beyond, thank you so much for this video, it’s giving me the tools of knowledge that I might have a small chance of this task from the heart may turn out as I hope it will. Again THANK YOU!

@tracybutler7510
@tracybutler7510 4 года назад
Your machine will have a dial showing numbers from (in the case of my machine) negative 4 to positive 5. Each machine has its own tension quirks, but the lower the number, the lower the tension. So for a slippery fabric start with a lower number than you'd normally use.

Hi! Glad I found your link! I have a new Brother LS14 but having problems sewing fine polyester 'satin'. I keep thinking the presser 'foot' under the needle is too tight down on the fabric(?) Moreover, I cannot seem to get any variation on the thread tension as I turn it either clockwise or anti-clockwise. It certainly looks like I have followed the correct routing of the 'upper thread'. Else, on a quick learning curve here, for a guy!!!

How can I get around this issue PLEASE lol I'm scared to even begin. 😅 I love the way you gave the tip about the hole covering. BRILLIANT 😘
@colleenglea
@colleenglea Год назад
You are so welcome Dona! It should have a tension dial on the FS40, which is the big circular shape more or less above the needle. Turn the thread tension dial counterclockwise to loosen the upper thread tension. Turn the thread tension dial clockwise to tighten the upper thread tension. I would recommend doing a couple of test samples before sewing your curtains. I hope that helps!

how do you reduce the thread tension? do you just pull it a bit by the needle?

No. The sewing machine has an option for that. It depends on the model where it's located.

Use tissue or tracing paper underneath your work and a plastic foot, I hope that helps.

You didn’t sew from the beginning of the fabric like you said you’ll show us, instead you showed us the “or”and it would be nice to show where to adjust this and that?

I'm sorry I meant to say satin or silk fabrics I guess I was thinking of knit fabric when I was posting the comment. I guess it's because I have so many problems with those kinds of fabrics.
