Smooth minky is my go to for plushies. I'd also recommend using the ladder stitch to attach limbs and what not. XD you can also do button joints in plushies like that :) I make plushies as my main source of income XD been doing this for over ten years. So if ya ever need any tips hmu.

Tip: if you have to stuff a gap that small next time use the back of a pencil ,pen , paint brush (just from my experience it makes things easier because I’ve done that by accident before too)
@bellamena

Oooo! This is a great tip!

Some maybe obvious tips: Use pins! If you’re sewing two pieces of fabric together, pin them together. So like pin the edge of the head gusset to the edge of the side of the head, pin the edges of the foot bottom to the foot leg, if you got two arm pieces, pin them together. Just pin everything! And you can just stop to take them out as you sew. And pin limbs onto the body as you sew them into place. Pin, pin, pin! It’s no different from when you’re sewing clothing together. Always trim your seam allowances off when you’re done sewing. It’ll make for smoother seams when you flip the plush right side out and stuff. You’ll get a lot less puckering especially on any curved places. Use a stuffing stick to stuff those small limbs. Most bags of poly-fil will include one, if not you can use a chop stick to do so (or should I say “sew”) For the future: Working with faux fur. You can’t use scissors to cut it because you’ll also cut the hairs too. You have to trace your pattern pieces on the back and essentially slice through the back of the fabric using like a box cutter, and you want your blade to be nice and sharp. Once done and you’ve flipped the sewn together pieces out, you’re going to have to take a brush (cat brush works great) and brush out the seams to pull out the hairs that got trapped when sewing, and it’ll be at that point where you can’t see the thread. Working with minky: If possible cut the pieces outside. Why? Minky fluff. If it’s too cold outside, then after cutting your pieces out, shake them out side or over a trash can and watch the little snowstorm. It’ll make for easier clean up.

I recommend trimming the excess seam allowance to create a crisper edge when you you inside them out. 😊 good luck on all your projects! “Seam Allowance: The small space of fabric between the raw edge and where the seam is sewn. Common seam allowances range from ¼ inch to 5/8 inch...”
@zmythos
@zmythos Год назад
I don't know much about sewing myself but from all the costubers/historical fashion tubers I've watched, I think what would've helped the head look less narrow would've been if the top piece had some seam allowance, so less of the fabric width would be eaten up by when you attach it to the sidepieces. Making plushies by hand is probably kinda different tho so obviously take this with a grain of salt. 😅
@bellamena
@bellamena Год назад
Yes, I honestly agree!! I felt like the head/neck did end up looking too thin and I'd like to try a different pattern next time !!
@batstitchinsane3607
@batstitchinsane3607 Год назад
Another issue is the fabric had no stretch to it. Most plush fabrics have a good deal of stretch and that allows for more stuffing, to get that full rounded shape :)

That template is more advanced than what I've done. My church will do bears for children in the hospital and its just basically two peices in the shape of a bear then sewn and stuffed. then they sew buttons on for eyes. I love teddy bears and this is awesome. I like the crafters square fabric. I use them to sew dog toys. From an amateur seamstress point of view, I did notice that you didn't leave room around the template for seam allowance. That's always important with a pattern to follow. Also if you are making a curved object once sewn you can snip up to the seam some fringe on the inside in order for it to keep its shape form. You can hand sew using a ladder stitch to make the edges seamless.

Alot of times when I make a plushie I hand sew it. I've made a couple, it takes alot longer, but I like doing it more. I have a sewing machine but no place to use it lol. Anyways when it comes to the hands/arms I make one normal and one mirrored, ie facing the other way.. that way both arms dont look the same and you can cut thumbs. I've ended up making so many mistakes when I mirror the pattern and end up with two arms that look the same. I like using minky myself and yes you do end up using more stuffing then you think. Best way is to take a small portion and fluff it some before stuffing you can end up using less. Hemostats btw come in handy when dealing with small openings or a small wooden stick, I forget what it's called but the polyfill I buy comes with one for free.

It's cute. To help with stuffing small holes I use a chopstick or a rounded pen and push the stuffing in with that. Fake fur looks really good as well as minky which both hide sticking well. I'm also guessing the pattern may have expected you to use a more stretchy material to take better shape in the head.
