This is an Earth friendly sewing project to make a reusable microwave popcorn bag that is as easy to make as microwave popcorn! Let me know if you make one!
It is critical that you only use cotton in making these bags. Polyester will melt in the microwave - and that is no bueno.
Materials:
100% Cotton Fabric , 100% Cotton Thread, measuring tool, pins or clips, scissors or rotary cutter and mat - and a sewing machine. The popcorn bags only take minutes to make.
Cutting dimensions: 12 inches by 22 inches (cut 2, one for exterior and one for lining.)
Popping time will vary by microwave. Do not leave your popcorn unattended in the microwave. My microwave takes 2 minutes and 38 seconds,. Just like with the commercially packaged microwave popcorn when you hear the popping slowing between pops, take it out. The popcorn will be hot so be careful when dumping it into your bowl and enjoy!
These popcorn bags make great gifts, are something you could sell at a craft fair (which is where my latest makes are going), and is a handy thing to have at home.

Love this! I will definitely be making some ;-) I do have a question: do you have to be concerned with the dye used in the fabric? Or can I assume that any 100% cotton fabric should be ok? Thank you, Christine! (new subbie ;-) ) xx
@christineeick5096
@christineeick5096 2 года назад
Welcome! The dye does not matter as far as microwaving though on most of mine I have used white on the inside. I always prewash my fabric.

Have you had your microwave popcorn bag scorch in the microwave. Should I be putting a half a glass of water in there to pop to protect the bag. My bag scorch so bad the fabric tore
@ChristineSewsALot
@ChristineSewsALot 7 месяцев назад
Oh my! That has never happened to me. I use 100% cotton fabric and 100% cotton thread. You definitely want to be safe. Not sure if your microwave is more powerful than mine, whether it is a fabric issue, or popcorn???? 🍿 I use Pop Secret and have used Orville Redenbacker as well as a generic popcorn without any issues. I do stand by the microwave the entire time the popcorn is in there and take it out immediately when the popping slows down.

I don’t always, but you could. I shake it out well. I would never put it back in the drawer if I felt like it was crumbly.

Thanks for this great video! I'm a beginner sewer. I only have fabric that are 21 inch long, not 22. Is it going to be a problem for this project?
@ChristineSewsALot

Not a problem. Maybe put a little less popcorn in and see how full it gets when you pop the popcorn

Thanks! Question though. I made one from 100% cotton everything. But when I popped it, a little of the popcorn burned inside in the middle. I figured I should use a little less popcorn, as it was still popping in full swing when the burning happened. I emptied the bag, and the triangle flaps that make the bottom were browned from burning. I threw it out. Does this mean the fabric was not truly cotton?
@ChristineSewsALot
@ChristineSewsALot 2 года назад
Oh no! It probably does mean that you could have had something that was not all cotton. Good thing you stayed with it. I have never had that happen in any I made or that I gifted.
@joannedifrancesco4555
@joannedifrancesco4555 2 года назад
Thanks for the speedy reply! I was hoping that was all it was. I was going to make a bunch for gifts, but wanted to test first. It didn’t melt, but it definitely burned.
@ChristineSewsALot
@ChristineSewsALot 2 года назад
@@joannedifrancesco4555 well give yourself an A+ for being smart enough to test a bunch before investing in making a bunch of them. I used quilting cotton from one of the well known fabric brands and I have used Gutterman’s cotton thread and Aurfil’s cotton thread. Thanks for watching!
