Today we check out the differences between a sewn binding versus a glued one, and how to spot what is what!
In this video I cover smyth-sewn bindings, glued perfect bindings, concertina bindings and hybrid bindings.
--- --- ---
The first book being used is the "Adult Version" of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (perfect binding).
The second book is: Amerika by Franz Kafka, published by the Folio Society (smyth-sewn binding).
The third book is: The Martian by Andy Weir (Hybrid(?) binding).
The fourth book is: The Hero with a Thousand Faces by Joseph Campbell ("fake smyth-sewn binding").
And the last book is the limited edition of "The Colour Out of Space" by H.P. Lovecraft published by Shelter Bookworks (concertina).

This is a very useful video. I have been checking the binding for years. I avoid the glued binding like a snake. Penguins are glued and the pages come off soon, if you read often. Now even some Penguin hardbacks have glued binding.This is plain cheating. Gluing defeats the very purpose of buying hardbacks. If I find a good trade paperback with sewn sections, I bind it myself.
@nanjappa42
@nanjappa42 5 лет назад
@Livskyo We still get some paperbacks with sewn-in sections. Penguin Classics Deluxe Editions come in this format. The new editions of Oxford Shakespeare ( individual plays) come in this format, and they also have very good paper. No Fear Shakespeare editions [ Spark Publishing ] are like this. I can give other instances. One has to shop for them in physical bookshops and not online as such details are not given by online sellers like Amazon. We in India are a bit lucky since most of our native publishers resort to sewn-in sections for paperbacks, except some who want to ape the West even in their absurdities. Indian reprints of foreign editions are also usually sewn-in. Strangely, even some Indian editions of Penguins are sewn-in eg "The Roots of Vedanta" 2012. "English Literature in Context ' [ed.Paul Poplawski] by Cambridge University Press reprinted in India 2012 is also sewn-in, and this is a splendid book. So we may say sewn-in paperbacks are not common, but not entirely absent. The problem is, most publishers do not read and are not really book lovers. Rather they love money more than the beauty or worth of their books. No true book lover will touch a glued in paperback or mass market stinker if there is a viable or affordable alternative.

I dislike glued books, but there is a problem with sewn books and it's that while the signatures are sewn together the cover is only held in place by the end page. I much prefer the medieval style for durability. Here the thread goes through all the signatures and through the front and back cover.
@PontusPresents
@PontusPresents 4 года назад
Don’t we all prefer the medieval style! Alas, the modern world value quantity over quality (and automation over craftsmanship), but in all honesty, I don’t believe I could afford the amount of books I own if the binding was of that quality . . . ;-)

Thank you so much for these explanations! I'm learning to rebind Bibles, and it's so frustrating to work with one that is glued. And also disappointing to find out about the hybrids and fakes. That makes shopping for a rebindable Bible more difficult. Also, your English is very very good, so please don't take the corrective comments too badly.

I am planning on using a double fan binding to repair a book of my mother’s. There is no way to create a signature, I have to bind single leaf, so this is the option available to me. I do not criticize any type of binding, all have their place.
@-johnny-deep-
@-johnny-deep- Год назад
So, is a "hybrid binding" one in which each signature is sewn together (and so you can see the stitches if you open it to the center of a signature), but the signatures are not all sewn together, but are merely glued to the spine?
@PontusPresents

@-johnny-deep-

@@PontusPresents I'm torn about buying books like that. What is your experience with the durability of such hybrid bindings? Plus, it can be pretty difficult to tell whether the signatures are all sewn together or not without damaging the book.
@PontusPresents
@PontusPresents Год назад
Durability is still pretty good since the book usually opens up much better than a glued binding. But yes, it can be very hard to tell what kind of binding it is! But I would always take a sewn binding over a hybrid, obviously 😁

Another type of fake sewn binding is glued with threads connecting all the pages but no signatures. I just found out that's they type of binding a printer offering "sewn" binding print. I don't know what it's called but it doesn't look strong at all.

Thanks for the video! I learned a lot, being a book collector but not someone who actually takes the time to learn the differences in binding. I understand what you mean now in your vids when you talk about binding. I was always assuming the FS bindings were superiour to your average hardback, but never sure why exactly. Do you take the time to check the binding on every book you buy? Or is that only a thing for more expensive books?

I do check the binding on pretty much all the books I get as of late, unless I already know the type of binding beforehand (for example Folio Society books). But I don't have to worry too much about binding since I mainly get my books from Everyman's Library, Folio Society and HarperCollins which 95-99% of the time has a smyth-sewn binding. I'm very glad that you learned something from this video! :) And about the video not showing up in your feed... That has been a problem for RU-vid for many years. I did have some uploading problems so maybe that's why it happened. @anakinskywalker1211

Hey, i don’t know if you’ll reply to this but i had to ask for help. I just got the Darth Vader: Dark Lord of the Sith comic book hardcover. It’s a medium thick book maybe like 2.5 cm thick and i think it is smyth sewn binding with glue between the pages. My problem is that some pages lay almost completely flat and lets me see the thread between the pages while some others are glued together and don’t lay as flat. If i spread between those pages and try to make it a little flatter (not aggresively) then the glue breaks and takes paper of the page with it. Some of the pages even did this automatically when i opened the book. I suspect that i should have let the glue dry before i opened it so that the pages didn’t lay as flat. Thanks!
@PontusPresents

I think it sounds more like hybrid binding (glued and sewn), than a smyth-sewn binding. If so, then there's not really much to do other than being a bit careful when opening it!

A hybrid bindning only has threads collecting each signature, they are not linked together. However, pretty much every single book, be it glued or sewn, uses glue in some way or another. A book can be smyth-sewn and will still have some kind of adhesive.

More and more trade hardbacks use crappy glued binding. I find Scribner to be absolutely horrible about this. They go for that fake sewn binding look to fool people. In reality, they use horrible glue and their bindings unglue very fast compared to many other publishers. For example, I have some Collins trade hardbacks from the early 1980s and the glue is still going strong, whereas my Scribner trade hardbacks from 2010s are already unglued.
