Sewn wig caps and wefts: Wefting alpaca and synthetic fibers for wig making

When I made my first BJD wig, I made the foolish mistake of thinking I could attach the loose fibers to the wig cap with just a single row of machine stitches. Now that I've had a little more experience, I know I need to make wefts first for sewn wigs! Today I'm sharing how I make my soft wig caps, as well as the method I use for turning both synthetic fibers and natural fibers like alpaca locks into wefts for making wigs.
My husband ordered a bunch more raw alpaca locks for me for my birthday, so I'll be making a lot of wigs this year! Should I make videos about preparing the locks too? Cleaning, combing, and sharing what products I use on the locks before making them into wigs? Let me know what you think!

It's really cool how you have made several videos on different techniques people can do to make wigs and wig caps! It sure helps out beginners figure out what's right for them

That's what I'm aiming for, so I'm glad you're enjoying it! A lot of the methods for wig creation are similar, but there are many ways to put them all together so I want to do what I can to show as many as possible.

I love all your videos, could this method work for brushed yarn fibers. I'm making some yarns wigs and don't know if I wanna make a glue wig.

Brushed yarn is very similar to alpaca fiber, so it should work fine!

Once the alpaca weft is sewn and the stabilizer removed, do you cut the excess hair that's been folded over before sewing the weft to a wig cap? Dolls are small scale and I worry not doing so would bulk the wig up. Would cutting the excess compromise the integrity of the weft? Since it's a natural fiber that has a cuticle, if I'm not mistaken, wouldn't the folded excess hair be running opposite to how the rest of the weft's hair is going? Would leaving the excess on and then brushing the wig (the hair shafts going in opposite directions) cause tangling? Please forgive me asking so many questions. I've not used natural fiber before for wig-making so I'm pretty in the dark when it comes to this.
@LomisPlayground
@LomisPlayground 5 лет назад
I don't cut it because my dolls are larger, so I can get by with just adding fewer wefts and it doesn't change things. Despite the fiber's cuticle, it's best to leave it longer so that it's more resistant to having hair pulled from the weft. You get some pulled out no matter what you do, but this does help reduce it. I've gotten to work with some human hair wefts before and they're made this way as well. It doesn't seem to cause a whole lot of problems to have the strands laying in different directions, but that could be because they don't get handled a whole lot, being for dolls. :)

Oooh that's been a minute! I think it was this one: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ZpOqoQDYXXA.html - the more layers of glue you add, the harder it is.

hi, i'm french, your work is beautifull. May i ask you what sort of fabric do you use to stich the natural fibers with? thank you in advance for your answer. Caroline

I use water soluble stabilizer... it melts in water and leaves just the hair and thread :) Then it can be sewn to the stretch lace wig caps.
@sabanonder7241
@sabanonder7241 7 лет назад
very beautiful , thank you very much:)) What is the material you plant on your hair? Is it paper or not?
@LomisPlayground
@LomisPlayground 7 лет назад
It's water soluble stabilizer. You can get it most places that sell fabric, it's designed to give fabrics more strength so they can be used in things like embroidery machines without stretching or tearing. :)

What yarn is used for making weft
@LomisPlayground
@LomisPlayground 5 лет назад
I don't typically work with yarn, but just about any kind of wool or acrylic yarn can be brushed out to make wefts.

Hi there. Why did you use a different method for the orange hair? Isn't the brown hair also synthetic?
@LomisPlayground
@LomisPlayground Год назад
No, the brown is natural fiber from an alpaca :) So it has a "grain" to the hair and lays differently than synthetics do.
@feliciaboston6365
@feliciaboston6365 Год назад
@@LomisPlayground ohhh. So you don't recommend the orange hair weft method on human hair?
@LomisPlayground
@LomisPlayground Год назад
@@feliciaboston6365 No, it makes it more prone to tangling because the cuticle (or "grain direction" of the hair) would be running in opposing directions!
@feliciaboston6365
@feliciaboston6365 Год назад
@@LomisPlayground awww ok thank you though. I don't like the first method much because it shortens the length of the hair

@LomisPlayground

I haven't, but I do have some human hair waiting for me to get to it! It should be the same principle as the alpaca fiber, though.

@ode2reading
@ode2reading 6 лет назад
So, why not just buy synthetic weave hair that already has a weft? Just asking.
@LomisPlayground
@LomisPlayground 6 лет назад
Some types of synthetic hair don't come in all colors, or don't have the same texture or feel of saran or nylon hair, which typically do not come in wefts. The orange hair I used in this video is actually leftover fiber from wefts that were far too long to use for a doll, but when you have a foot of fiber cut free, it'd be a huge waste to just throw it out. Knowing how to use the leftovers to make new wefts saves money and saves the synthetic trimmings from going to the landfill, too :)
