@@igorstein5616 he was one of the founders of punk, it wasn’t anything in particular pre Pistols, so no idea how Glen wasn’t “punk”. He just clashed with Rotten, which was punk.
I gotta say this..I am Black, American and 70 years old. This is the greatest Rock Anthem ever recorded. I mean it. And is that Tony Wilson at the top? Man, this is pure Culture Shock.
There's probably another albums worth of stuff, but it wouldn't have been as good as Never Mind. I think they could have made a decent follow-up, but 'twas not to be.
TheTestingGrounds That’s cause Malcolm Mclaren kicked out Glen Matlock and replaced him with Sid Vicious because he had a cooler image. But Mr. Promoter forgot that Glen wrote all the songs and Sid didn’t write anything. He just looked good. So that’s why they imploded and there’s no follow up album.
There are no words for how astounding this is. The Sex Pistols - pure raw rebel youth emotions .......yesss!!! Johnny, you are magnificent here, as is the rest of the band, but it's mostly Johnny who expresses the urgent emotion with all his heart, soul, and unique, powerful, magnificent VOICE! The voice of a generation! Long live The Sex Pistols!
I agree, trouble is, you saying that is the opposite of what he wants to hear. His facial expression, of resentment and disgust is genuine, heartbreaking sorrow, of young working class people, growing up, In poverty, With no hope or direction in the Seventies, which was just made even worse by Thatcher the following decade. He wants his message to be genuinely listening to, or not even this,, it's gone so far, he just wants to burn the world down because of his previous suffering.in his eyes, somebody seeing his demeanour as shocking and impressive and being captivated by the whole "performance", is irrelevant
@Patty Cifra and The Harlequin: Yes, it goes way beyond just Johnny's ability as a performer. It's his whole attitude of disgust and nihilism, and how effectively that comes across.
That malevolent stare of Johnny's at the end says so much. Utter contempt for everything passive. You can see him thinking to himself 'look at you sad people, you have no idea what is coming'. Well that's a cleaned up version at least.
Glen Matlock came up with some of the most devastating riffs in rock'n'roll. And what did he get for that? Kicked out, because McLaren didn't want a band, he wanted a publicity stunt.
Check out the Sex Pistols release “Spunk”. Matlock was pure genius

Matlock was too soft for these guys in 76. On the other hand, they over did it with the attitude, forgetting they were the greatest rock and roll band in UK at the time. They could easily have continued for several years w Matlock if they just let him be the old school rocker he was, and still is.
He said he liked the Beatles that pissed John off McClaren got Sid he fitted the image better. But agree Sid was a bit too outrageous.. after the murder, suicide John started PIL.. seems none of them liked each other.. except John & Sid.
Imagine if you told music critics in 1976 that this band would make 1 album and 46 years later in 2022, people would still be listening and talking about them. I’m guessing it will be the same in 2032, 2042, and 2052.
You can be as outrageous as you want, without a good band it's going nowhere. Cookie and Matlock were a rock solid rhythm section, it was an absolute crime getting rid of Matlock. With Vicious they became a stunt band, all style and no substance. Matlock might not have had the stage presence of Vicious but he's a bass player, they're usually in the background. They already had one of the greatest and charismatic rock frontmen of all time, they didn't need a talentless junkie sideshow.
At a distance of 40 years or so, you can see how groovy the group actually is. I was 15 when this single came out and of course we all loved it because it was huge fun, and a world away from all the dreary prog rock that older lads at school liked, adn some of the sillier stuff then in the UK charts. For us lot, who liked Tamla Motown, the Beatles, reggae and glam rock when we were young, thing shad got sooo serious in music. This stuff was a fantastic outrageous celebration of transgression. Steve Jones was an impeccable rhythm guitar player, and Matlook and Cook a genuinely great pop rhythm section. John was John of course. Never my favourite group of the era, nevertheless it cannot be denied that they blazed a trail and rocked!
Sid would stand on stage looking at his bass trying anything to figure out what the hell the purpose of those 4 strings. Always out of key. Guess he was so high that he thought he was doing his part.
Steve Cook. Why has no-one recognised that drummer? He's amazing. Always on the beat. Cook hold's it all together. Great drummer. As for Steve Jones.... I was not born then but that track "Paradise Place" shows some supreme ability. Of course John McKay is the best guitarist who grew-up in the 70s and invented the Banshee sound that everyone copies.
Paul Cook was a very rudimentary drummer. Nothing exceptional. He did his job. Steve Jones on the other hand was no Jimmy Page, but came up with some very good licks, and was very effective for the Pistols.
I have not been to a gig of the sex pistols since 1977,but looking at the video, the are historic. They will go down in history as a new genre and innovation.God save the Queen.
John Woods Lol, could have been something Rotten pulled out of his arse, or could have been true. Judging by those big eyebrows Glen had, I doubt the gave too much about hygiene related issues.
We all have our vices and weaknesses. One of my very guilty pleasures is concert video footage and has been since the late 80's. As I am typing this, I thank God that these four guys were video taped playing their music here AND decades later, someone posted this performance on a public video platform called "You Tube." Thank God Sex Pistols were videotaped with BOTH Glenn and Sid. God care for Sid's addicted tormented soul. In hundreds, if not thousands of years from now, many of these same bands and solo artist's music will STILL be played for people to deal with their miseries. Sex Pistols are one of them and are that special. For the love God, hopefully these videos too will still be available to watch.
When Johnny says at the reunion concert in 2007 that he’s a lucky bastard because he has the greatest band in the world behind him it brought tears to my eyes. Matlock, Cookie & Jonesie somehow were like JPJ, Bonzo & Jimmy Page in how they filled up the room sonically. Remarkable
Really refreshing to listen The Sex Pistols, especially if you submerge yourself into bands of that period of time, like The who, Sweet, T Rex, etc.....
I saw this the night it was broadcast! Thought it was funny at first but I bought the bollocks the week it was released. Still take it out every now `n` then and the music still sounds brilliant.
unless u was growing up then u just cant understand how the pistols bent the music industry/charts over, and gave it to them, im 56 now and still have that rip it down/destroy in my heart. anger is a energy
As a child (born in ‘68) I saw punks on TV and asked myself: ‘What are they dressed that way, and why are they so pissed off?’ That’s when I delved….. i get it now.
This is one of the greatest performances ever filmed . Filmed just at the right time for a phenomenon to be filmed . The gates of hell were opened on Quay st Manchester and out spilled this .
Oh to go back & see these guys. I was born in 72. I was too young. I'm 50 now & seriously rocking out. I love Johnny even today because he is just regular guy.. He's a grandparent like me. But he still kicks @$$ & I love that. He is utterly mesmerizing.
Never Mind the Bollocks was recorded before Sid Vicious ever joined the band, so he did not perform on it, or contribute to the album. The bassist for all their hits was Matlock.
Izzz zissss ze yem-pe-a-RRRRa-yyyy Orrr izz zisssss ze yuuuu-deeee-yyyaaaayyyyyyYYYY Orrrrr izzzz zissss the YAYArrrrrrRRRRRAAAAYYYYYYYY Oh god I love Johnny's voice and the twisted way he sings
Johnny wanted Sid in the band because he felt that the others were sort of against him because Steve, Paul and Glen were all friends before they met Johnny. Johnny got Sid into the band so he would have someone he could trust in the band. And yes, Glen did like ABBA, but surprisingly, so did Sid.
This is still pretty raw and abrasive now. For your average Northerner tuning into Granada TV in 1976- and I think this might have even been before they were signed- it was probably fucking terrifying. My favourite thing about Uncle Johny is the 1st 2 lines of lyrics he ever wrote were: I am an antichrist, I am an anarchist. Didn't even rhyme, but right from the get go: Not a single fuck given. Also: Total respect for Tony Wilson.
Greeenday, Good Charlotte, ect. are exactly what they themselves have admitted their music as being: pop-punk. If that's what they want to do, if thats who they want to be, then that's fine..as long as they have no illusions about what they really are. This band, this marauding, angry, chaotic group of outcasts and misfits: THIS was one aspect of the punk, or punk-rock movement. Punk or punk rock, it doesn't matter because both terms were often interchangeable. This is great stuff. Thanks!
Ya'know, for some reason I never really expected these guys to be any good live, but honestly, it's pretty good

I`m a bass player and I remember how little respect we got in the 80s. It was all about lead guitars. The fun thing is that if you get a guitarist to play the bass, it sounds just like a guitarist that plays the bass.
Yeah this is before they replaced Glen Matlock with Sid Vicious, so they were excellent. Any sloppiness is either intentional or from not giving a single f***.
@Jojo The Man: Great comment. Ithink the crux of what secures the Sex Pistls's place in history is that, regardless of the perception of angst and rebellion in rock'n'roll of the 1950s (Elvis) and '60s (Beatles, and especially The Who), the Sex Pistols married the amplified musical assault with Johnny's snarling rage in a way that can never be outdone.
THIS IS THE BEST VERSION FROM ANARCHY IN THE U.K. GREETINGS FROM MEXICO CITY ! DESTROYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That last close-up blows me away. There's this weird momentary look, as he gets his bearings. He looks like a a poet who belongs in the Lake District with Wordsworth. I know this sounds preposterous, but under the grime and anger, the Sex Pistols are true Romantics.
"You can hear them warming up" ... silence, and gives them a couple of seconds for them to grab the cue and start warming up, then nods approvingly at the camera when they do
to 555 down there..G.G. died here*again ATL* Clermont Lounge in 90s. Outsiders wrongfully thought there was no scene down south. Hell, it was as great as L.A. at one time (longgg agoooo)
The only real punk band. Everyone else was a poser or imitation. The Genius of the Sex Pistols was their ability to deliver a message while simultaneously mocking their own act as complete bullshit.
You really haven't a clue then. The first wave of underground punk bands inspired a 2nd & 3rd wave. All underground. Before the term Alternative came about. I was part of a 30 year scene. There were way more bands in the UK scene besides the Pistols. I still listen to their bootlegs & singles.
Ha Tony Wilson cutting from Derek and Clive to the Pistols is priceless..0.21-0.37 Start of PIL anyone? Awesome performance btw..Matlock might have washed his feet alot but he looks cool and plays brilliantly here
There are only two valid reasons to play Rock: to get laid, and/or to annoy people. Rotten took it one step farther; he played to disturb people, which made this the greatest Rock of all time. This is Rock that lives in the moment, with no thought for sales or some poxy Hall of Fame, and therefore it's timeless.
Well all you new punks out there I am now 53 years old and old enough to appreciate what this music meant to me at the time.It was the undiscovered country, it was now,and anyway they are in an ironic way the royalty of punk.Saw them live once, wish it could have been more,so all you young twats out there thinking you seen it all think again.Coldplay my arse
I always thought they were crap growing up, then at the age of 30 I rented a video of their film, on a lark, and was stunned at how talented they were. I was blown away by their performance of God Save the Queen on a barge during the Julbilee.
