Seymour Duncan Pegasus Sentient vs Gibson 490R 498T - Les Paul Custom Pickup Shoot Out! 

The 498T might be one of the best pickups made. That middle position was just magic. The SD are good, but I find the 498T and 490R have the IT factor I look for.

Great comparison! Personally, I liked the Gibsons more. The SD’s provide more articulation, but the Gibsons sound thicker and make the guitar sound more like a…well, Gibson 😁

That Sentient neck clean is perfection

I love the way you do an introduction to your video. I thought you were a much bigger channel the way everything is presented but I love what you do. You did a great demonstration on the pick ups I’m considering getting in a guitar.

If you enjoy high gain/distortion then 498T is just the great pickup IMO

Late to the party here but Seymour Duncan for the bridge and Gibson for the neck.

more I play with my Gibson more I realize that Gibson's pickups have the best tweak for the their guitar construction and wood specs. About Pegasus & Sentient, I have to say that these pickups are king for articulation, I haven't seen better than Pegasus in that very matter to be honest.

I have to give it to the Gibson pups overall. Cleaner and more articulate IMO!

I only heard a slight difference in certain riffs you played. Honestly the Gibson pickups sounded a bit better only because they had a better low end. Nice video.

Charlie... I'm late watching your review. Did you find the SD pick ups to be less bright than the Gibsons? To me through RU-vid the Gibsons sounded like treble was higher in the frequency response compared to the SD pickups.

I'm late here too, but I have a SD Sentiant in yhe neck and 498t bridge and its absolutely KILLER. Highly recommend to anyone looking for a bit of snarl and balance with the 498t bridge and clean, snappy but warm Sentiant neck pup, and combined 100% amazing. Period.

They SD's boast clearer string to string articulation, I'm considering upgrading a mid range baritone electric and those are the electronics the higher end model comes with. I think i see why

It’s crazy the 498 and 490 sound great in my custom but I put some in another guitar and they didn’t sound that great. Something about that pickup guitar combo just work well

Lovely LP Custom. I'm looking for great Hard Rock/Rock pickups for an SG copy.

If you want to keep the Gibson sound but enjoy the articulation of the Pegasus, put an A5 magnet in the 498T.

To my ear I think the 490R and the 498T sound way better. The Duncan's sound good too however they seem to soft for my taste.

Both sound amazing! I had Gibson 490 & 498 in Gibson SG Standard and they were superb! I'm buying a new set for my 7 string Ibanez Apex and i think Pegasus/Sentient combo will do it perfectly for my needs (metal in drop A)

Gibson has more clarity in bridge distorted tones but not as tight. I think bare knuckle pickups would be focused and clear with the string to string separation they're known for.

Gibson sounded really nice in the middle. I feel like you needed to roll the tone knob back with the SD’s for that gorgeous mid gain sound.

I have the 498T/490R in my LP Custom and I really like them.. My guitar sounds great through most amps... If I want any extra distortion I can get it via a pedal... But for most things they are great straight through

The SD's are cool but the 498T and 490R sound better. Many guitarists assume that there is something better out there than the 498T and 490R but these pickups are hard to beat. The 498T is one of the greatest pickups of all time and so is the 490R....they compliment each other perfectly.

Not a fan of the 490t and 490r set in my SG. Sound loose and not enough output for metal. I guess they’re nice up until you get heavy though. Thinking Sentient Pegasus. Thanks for the video!

I dig both sets. As much as I love the Pegasus/Sentient set I think the Gibson 490 set is great and would not change them.

Gibsons sounded thicker/better to me. They simply sound like “a Les Paul” to me…..

Love the guitar!! I like both pickups! The Gibson's have a looser and broader sound and Duncans are tighter. I tried a Duncan Custom instead of the 498t but ended up back with a Gibson... 500T and its just indredible.

I would keep the original pickups in the case if I were you. If you ever sell your guitar probably going to need them.

Nice demo! Not sure I like these SDs but I do like them better than the Gibsons... to me the 498T is just harsh / brittle, the 490 is good for the neck though. I've had the 498T in LPs, SGs and Explorers and they never stayed more than a few months.

498t and 490r is the best all around pickup set money can buy. So underrated

The Gibsons were better on the bridge. Seymours on the Neck. However, for the difference it makes... I don't think changing from Gibson pickups is worth the hassle, unless you specifically want active pickups or something very specific.

They all sound great to me but the Gibson Neck PUP. I tend to not enjoy many neck pickups, personal preference. Can't find any PUP I like better than the Seymour Duncan JB. Coil split or series parallel is all I need. Well Treble bleed too but it's not for everyone

I’m not a fan of the 490R or 498T in my SG got rid put some iron gear P90’s in instead. As for the SD I have a set in a Chapman Pro series guitar they have to be paired with the right amp settings to sound killer so it takes a little while to dial them in they definitely have grown on me.

To me gibson is a bit fuzzier and brighter than the duncan. I really like the sound of duncan bridge pickup. It’s slightly more modern and mid-focused. So tasty

I like SD pickups but I couldn't get rid of the pegasus fast enough! 498t is much better pickup it has that grainy sizzle on top. Makes it sound much more aggressive. Pegasus is just boring and too low end heavy

The Duncans sound like higher output versions of the GIbson stockers specifically.

490R and 498T win here. i prefer Gibson Dirty Fingers in bridge and Gibson Classic 57 Plus in neck, it is killer. Never get rid of that LP Custom, EVER...unless you want to give it to me lol.

I’d take the Duncan’s simply bc I’ve tried this set before and absolutely loved it but also at the same time the gibsons sound great One thing that bothers me about the les Paul is I think it looks a little strange with bean button tuner heads don’t get me wrong everythings great about it just to me any les Paul custom epiphone/Gibson I like tulip button heads for that whole “vintage” style thing there’s just something satisfying about having a vintage looking guitar but playing modern music like am I crazy for believing that or do some people agree about the tulip tuner heads to me the tulip heads sum up that vintage headstock where as the beans just don’t quite satisfy if that makes any sense 😂😂😂 basically the tulip heads capture that true Gibson headstock look

IMO Gibson pickups sound WAY better simply because they were made to match the guitar... I have a Gibson LP Studio 2010 with the same pickups and it sounds exactly like this LP Custom of the video with the 490 and 498, same textures, same bite, same roar... Gibson pickups are made for Gibsons, they make Gibsons sound like Gibsons.. I don't get why ppl spend 5k on a Gibson Custom and put generic modern pickups on them that make them sound like guitars that are half their price.

Duncan sounded better with lots of gain. More definition.

I might have to check out the Pegasus/sentient for my Edwards Les Paul for Standard tuned Thrash. I play through Solid State amps for the most part, which allows me to achieve a really tight high gain sound going straight in. With the help of a Graphic EQ, I’m able to mimic the sound of a tube amplifier being boosted by an overdrive without actually needing an overdrive in front. I’m hoping I’ll be able to achieve both the classic mid-focused honk you get from more modern music, and the mid-scooped sound of 90’s groove and Thrash.

They sound the same. They copied the 498T because it's IMHO the best Humbucker. It straddles the line between vintage and Modern............sure it leans a little more to modern.

Too much saturation on the 490's and buzz. SD more clear and articulate, reason I picked these up myself. The only pickups that put up a good fight against these SDs are dimarzio XCN and Evo

GIBSONS just kill! Throw the SDs in a cheap Walmart guitar that’s what it’s designed for. Pros play SDs, EMG, and Dimarzios for marketing. They get paid to use them, you don’t need the upgrade unless it’s a hello kitty budget guitar. IMHO.
