3:20. That bridge used to carry slag ladles from Staveley's blast furnaces. On the far right of the picture is the Staveley Chemicals garages that maintained the tanker fleet. The garages used to be a cell room for splitting brine with electric. I used to work there (1975-1996) and the first job of the day was to take the fork trucks up for diesel
the Bolsover branch was finished by 2004 and the final coal train from Oxcroft was on the 26th January 2006, the Peterborough Re-Re Avoider railtour ran to Oxcroft and back on the 4th March 2006 and was the final train ever to be controlled by Seymour Signal Box. the line did reopen for 3 weeks in November 2007 in order for Oxcroft to sort through the remaining coal tips although even by that point Seymour Signal Box was so badly vandalised that all pointwork had to be clamped and all signalling was suspended even as far as Hall Lane junction. so the last working would of been at some point during November 2007. by 2014 much of the infrastructure at Seymour was stolen/vandalised and Network Rail lifted any remaining trackwork at Hall Lane during December 2015.
Fantastic channel, enjoying everyone of your videos. They generate emotions of nostalgia and inspire adventure. I wish that when these tracks are converted into walk and cycle ways - which is a good thing - they would try and leave behind a few more of the furnishings and keep some of the character.
Recent repairs and the drainage cover(s) suggest it’s still owned by NR, I do some contract work examining stability of the cuttings and embankments. Quite a lot of what I do is on disused lines that NR still have responsibility for..
Working my way through your videos - interesting stuff about an area of the country I've never really been to. Using Streetview to get my bearings you can see from Hall Lane the track still in situ. that's dated May 2012.
I've toyed with taking the flood light in next time i go back. It could be really long, or could be a dead end. There is a methodist church somewhere above, or was
Another excellent video especially as I only live in 5 minutes from Barrow Hill so am very familiar with it all. If you ever wish to do a video at BH (I know its not disused) let me know as I'm the Membership Secretary/PW Manager there.
the ladders on those signals (at least the 2 you've done so far at the time I'm making this comment during the vlog) were certainly in good condition. did hear you mention the track was lifted in 2012, so that wasn't that long ago, must explain why the ladders are still so sturdy! and the signal that was still lit, wow! 6 years or more, and the bulb is still working!
We couldn't believe it. I noticed when i played the video back the bulb was flickering. I can't remember if it was on the day. That pill box is love to shine a light in there
the system is literally 12 volts & a bulb can last for a very long time as well as they are all dual filment so when one fails the other takes over the flickering is due to frame rate
At 1:58, Top left side. The long brick building is the Aniline Shed. Behind is the benzole refinery (BTC). I worked there from 1990 to 1996 when it was shut down The 4 chimneys to the far left are oil-fired package boilers.
I've been in there today it doesn't go far after the tunnel it turns right into a back fill it's a pill box used for the rail way during ww2 but it's just got damaged and backfilled
@@TrekkingExploration Spinkhill has changed they've backfilled the tunnel but you can still get inside and they have chopped trees on the way there. I live in Renishaw near there🙂
The footbridge at 7:16 is part of a footpath from Barrow Hill to Staveley. There is a tunnel that goes under the works. I'm not sure if it comes out at the bottom of Mill Green or the top of Hall Lane (I think Mill Green). I'm going to put this up on Facebook on the Staveley Chemicals closed page
I've never walked the section where the pill box is - the remaining track and the signal still working could be something to do with the way that track circuiting works. It might be easier and cheaper just to leave it there than to modify the system and take it out of the circuit. They might also have decided not to do it because of the mods that might be needed to the whole area when (if) HS2 comes through.
Well I’ve put feelers out in several places, a Barrow Hill local history group and a Pill box group but nothing has really come back other than suggestions it’s a WW2 guard hut (but why there and guarding what?). Some said it originally led up the hill to the houses above and that the tunnel was blocked when the building was refurbished a few years back. But again, why was there a tunnel? It’s all very curious!
