I wanted to make this video before finishing the first episode of Shattered (the voice acted series splatoon series I have been working on) because I wanted to introduce Kade a little bit before launching straight into it.
To clear up any confusion: the more saturated animation scenes indicate the present, and the more black and white means the past. (Besides the exception of the forest scene that takes place in Kades mind which is fully colored) the colors also show how little by little, the world appeared more colorful as he slowly began discovering himself.
So, let me try to word this characters story and what takes place in this video as simple as possible without missing any important details...
The Story of Kade:
Cephalopods are made up of the creatures of the sea, some like inklings who live on the surface, while Octarians dwell underground in the dark.
All Octarians are required by the octarian government to enroll in a facility at birth. Wether it's fighting and claiming territory or helping build weapons and architecture, all help is wanted and needed to help the octarian society survive.
There were rumors of a boy octoling, the only one of his kind, dwelling among the octolings. Some say he's a failed experiment due to his strange looks, while others say he was a traitor to the Octarians.
Scientifically, many cephalopods have inherited special traits and abilities from their great ancestors such as the cuttlefish or the blue ringed octopus...but many of these supernatural powers have been lost over time as the inklings and octolings forgot them and they faded to myths and ledgends.
Some specific traits indicate what ability they have have, for example:
Octolings with glowing colored fingertips have the ability to make objects levitate at will, therefore they are highly sought after in Octarian facilities.
Another known fact is any cephalopod with yellowed eyes indicate they work for the Octarian army. Due to the evidence that all the octarians in assigned facilities under DJ octavio have this mysterious trait. Therefore, if an octarians eyes are white, they are portrayed as a traitor to their kind. (How the eyes change is still unknown.)
This is no inheritied look, and no one knows how the underground octarians have this trait.
But one male octoling named Kade, who wakes up in an Octarian facility with no memories, like all the other octarians in his facility, discovers an incredible power that changes his life.
After a few months as working as a soilder, and being labeled as "the weird looking octoling outcast", he finally makes a friend. He meets Aria, a sweet but clumsily Octoling when she accidentally falls off a building and nearly dies because she wanted to get a view of the surface from the veeeeeeeery top of the Octarian dorm tower.
Then she suddenly disappears.
When she returns half a year later, Kade realizes that she, his only friend, had left him for the inklings and the mysterys of the surface world, the world above their facility that they were forbidden to explore. He lashes out at her yelling at her for abandoning him and realizes too late that not only his words had hurt her, but a strange new ability he never knew he had, had resurfaced itself within him.
Besides his ability to make objects float (which he keeps under wraps), he finds he can make his tentacles glow to hypnotize anyone who looks at the bright light. Questioning the octarian government of why he was placed here and who he was, he realizes there may be more to this Octarian society that it appears.
He tried to escape the facility but ended up in the clutches of Comander Tar Tar and the Kamabo Co.
He scrambled through a twisted maze of tests winding through Deepsea Metro, became Agent 8, defeated Tar Tar, and saved the world.
He doesn't give himself enough credit for what he's done, often comparing his achievements to others and putting himself down.
He still looks for a friend to play his violin for, and hopes that Aria is doing ok, where ever she is.
In the end, he finds everything. Himself, his past, and his passion for music which reminds him of the times he only had his violin to comfort him and help him convince himself to keep him going.
