Wrestlers in this manga are more often than not portayed as not only villains but one of the strongest and "toughest" fighters in the world. They're not all that bad, but the power they have is not to be underestimated. Which the main character learns quickly. The series is more or less about MMA but the way the character goes up against wrestlers that dont hold back is insanely fascinating. there is an OVA series you can watch of Tough in english dubb which is not easy to find online bc its titled Shootfighter Tekken instead. Its only a few episode an will lead you into wanting more.
I like to use photos of UFC and BJJ for awkward body poses. Armbars are tough to render because of the mess the legs and arms make. I used to flip the drawings around 90 or 180 degrees to make it more surreal too. Haven’t done it for ages though. I should revisit it. Fighting in comics is always just punches. Surely a character like Captain America would hit the Buckshot Lariat on someone or armbar them, it fits the psychology. Look forward to where Tough takes you drawing wise.
Really enjoy Saruwatari's art. He's got a ridiculously large body of work, but we've gotten very little of localized here. Damned, Dog Soldier and Riki-Oh are worth checking out if you like what you see in Tough. They are much more supernatural strength though ala Fist of the North Star.
Hey Daniel for a drastically different approach on drawing fight scenes, check out "Shamo" drawn by Akio Tanaka. It's like a perfect opposite way of drawing it, but it has as much impact to me.
Shamo, with all of its dumb stuff, is what showed me How much an emotional narrative can enhance a Martial Arts story. One of my favorites, its great (also Very dark/edgy). It has a beautiful Very "slow motion" feel in it that's Just amazing
I'm from Argentina, there's 0 wrestling here. But I gotta say, after hearing you talking about wrestling a couple times and after seeing the fight between Jerome and Dag in Extremity vol.1, I became pretty curious about the whole thing. Since two days ago I'm watching random matches on YT while I "wrestle" with my 2 yold boy.
@@DanielWarrenJohnson1 Same here, Shida and Thunder Rosa were my huge match of the night, two hard hitting competitors that brought the show around after that scary moment.
