I can’t thank you enough for making this video. Not only did it solve the problem, but your explanation was clear and thorough…I was even able to get the product number from your Lowe’s receipt! For anyone who’s interested, it’s 44748 for 1/8” brass rod
I bought my pool last summer and only used it for 2 months and this summer for about 2 as well and my pump stopped working and it was humming but not working so I found you're video as I was searching to try to fix my problem and I purchased the brass round and cut it to size and boom it's working great now ty so much for you're video now I can enjoy the rest of the summer. I contacted the polygroup company that makes my pool and they would not replace the pump or the rotor assembly as the warranty was for 6 months even tho I didn't use it for that long. I paid almost 600 dollars for it plus chemicals, sand and everything I needed to set it up. I won't purchase a pool from them again I will get a better pool next summer. Again ty so much for you're video without it I would be spending about 40 bucks for the rotor assembly and now everything is just peachy :) :)
Thank you so much for this video! I was going to go out and buy a $200 pump and I decided to give your fix a try but didn't think it would work because I'm not very handy when it comes to fixing things, but sure enough it worked great! My Canadian Tire sells the Hillman 1/8 inch x 36 inch brass rod (but that brand is not listed on the online site) and I just took it to their auto service desk and asked if they had wire cutters to cut it to exactly 3 5/16" (8.41 cm) and they cut me a couple pieces. I didn't take the bottom piece off of the pump because I couldn't get it off so I just unplugged the pump and worked from the top pulling that magnet out with my fingers and doing the rest of your steps. I cleaned out all the debris from the blades and I put the flattest piece of the brass rod at the bottom of the pump and the top was cut a little crooked so I did what you suggested and sanded it down a little bit on concrete to smooth the edge. The pump works better than it has in a long time! For those of you that are having trouble getting the black round stopper plug to seal the sidewall pool hole while working on the pump just put Vaseline around the edge of that plug and it sticks in place nicely. Thank you again for this awesome money saving video!
Rob, my friend - you just saved the rest of my summer! Can't thank you enough for your video. I'm pretty handy, but I gotta admit - knowing I had to deal with a pool pump was an 'Oh s**t' moment. So easy. Well done. From my whole family here in Long Island, NY.....THANK YOU!!
Its so EASY and it WORKS! I am not (but becoming) a handy housewife and this saved us $170. Our 2nd pump just broke and I was ready to buy another one because I didn't know what else to do. I watched this video earlier this afternoon spent $1.59 for the brass rod, worked on the pump for about 15-20 mins and now my pump is working as good or better than new. Thank you so much! Great advice and great video.
Robert Badilla, thank you so much! You saved me from either buying a new pump or trashing the pool! Picked up the exact brass rod at lowes and it worked perfectly!
May 15, 2022 I just finished fixing my pool pump following your instructions. The problem was the ceramic rod, just like you said. It’s working perfectly!!! Thank you so, so much. Greetings from Poteet, Texas :)
I want to thank you very very much for your video I fix my pool pump for 4 bucks instead of almost buying a new pool pump motor and I decided to watch RU-vid and see if anything was on there and I came across your video a million thank yous my friend. You just save me a hundred bucks
Our pump stopped, so my husband took the bottom off and found out the gear was getting stuck. Super simple fix and saved us $80. I hope it continues to work!
@@bobganoosh5520 went to Lowe's, they did not have it. Maybe HD I'll try but thx so much because I wasn't sure if the shaft was broken but after seeing your video I checked it and sure enough one end was smooth the other was jagged and slightly sharp. So, you Da man!
Omg, you saved us a boatload of money! We just knew it was the pump and was about to shell out almost $100! It was cheap, simple and quick! The only thing, we had to partially drain our pool because we didn't have a stopper, but that was no biggy! Thank you so much!!
I bought my Summer Waves pool last year and had no problems with the sfx1000 pump all season. I went to open my pool this year and the pump would start to turn on, but wouldn't. I took everything apart thinking it was a broken pin (mine looks to be plastic) and the pin looked totally fine! Upon a closer look though, the top end of the pin is just barely rounded on the edges. So I figured I'd take a chance and flip it and put the good side on top. It started working immediately! Thanks for the great video info and comments from everyone!
Very helpful video! A pretty good symptom that it’s this problem is that if your pump is still running, it’ll make a heck of a lot more noise than usual
2nd season of use and my pump ran for about a week then, as described, just the “hum” of the motor and no water flow. Found this excellent video but then found on disassembly that all the fins of the rotor were sheared off! And yes, the ceramic rod was broken. So, had to buy the replacement impeller and immediately made this mod before installing, using the new ceramic one for exact measurement and saving it as a backup. It ran for about a day then quit working again. The new rotor had a piece of the plastic sheath covering the strong magnet missing. Perhaps I had not aligned it properly during installation or maybe some large debris caused it. So, I removed all the sheath, careful to not damage the ends. This was not easy by the way. Smoothed everything with sandpaper, reassembled, tested as before then reinstalled. All seems to be working fine - time will tell. Thank you, Bob!
Thank you so much. $1.79 brass rod from Ace and I'm back in action. I had the broken spindle for a while. I knew it, but it kept running. Then yesterday the pump just seized up. I could hear it hum and could tell it was pulling some amperage, but the impeller was stopped. I tried to free it with my hand and it strongly flicked my fingers. Went to get the brass rod, and it's good to go! Thanks again.
Ours broke in 3 pieces after 8 HOURS of use, brand new out of the box! So it’s still happening with the same problems in 2020. Thank you so much!! Went to Lowe’s and got the exact same brass rod as well. Pump works just fine.
Awesome. Glad you fixed it. Those ceramic rods are garbage. I just had to replace my first brass rod. It lasted 3 full summers. 3 summers is definitely better than 8 hours. Lol. Just keep the extra rod for future repairs.
I’m so happy I found your video. I snapped the rod but had no idea how to fix it. So bought a new one for $180. And after a few days the new one snapped. I was about to SNAP myself and then I found you! Thank you.
@@thebearshikingoutdoorsmans3060 ohhhh great idea!!! Ive been trying all kindd of different things from insukated copper wire to gang coat hangers! Lol
Thank you so much for this, we fixed ours today! I honestly didn't have high hopes of it working (not because of your advice, but because things generally don't work out so easily/cheap for us). I was so incredibly excited to see that water filtering through again! 🙌
I know the feeling all to well. Glad you got it going again. Keep the spare rod. Because the metal rod snaps as well. Just not as easy. If for some reason it doesn't work after replacement... Your rod may be too long (shave down) or the ends might not be smooth enough. Just grind on concrete floor if needed. Happy swimming
Bob, just wanted to say thank you again. We still had the remainder of our rod from last year and a couple weeks after setting up the pool this year, it snapped again. Even easier to fix than last year as the rod was on-hand. Your video is saving us year after year!
Thank you so much! So glad I found your video. My pump only ran for about 16 hours and the ceramic rod snapped. With all this Covid business every part for the pumps have become super expensive. You're a life saver! I thought our summer swimming was over!
Hi!! My pump wouldn't even power on this morning...I checked and the ceramic rod was broken. I just got back from Lowe's from purchasing th we item you showed on your receipt. I have a question...will the broken rod prevent it from even powering on...any type of power at all? This pump is barely 6 months old and has been working fine. I pray this piece helps!!
@@tonyadean6117 hi Tonya. With a broken rod, the pump should still power on. It won't physically turn, but there should by some sort of noise/vibration. My friend's pump had debris on the rod and it completely shut the pump down. My buddy thought it was electrically damaged. After cleaning the rod/pump, it fired right up. So it could possibly be the case for yours as well. Good luck.
@Bob Ganoosh I had to clean a lottle.bit of condensation down in the bottom of the housing...did the *brick* trick of smoothing the ends of the rod....It is working now!! I may have to dry out my pump *plug* housing...i see a little bit of condensation in the reset/test areas... So the hubs is going to do that for me!! Thank you SO so soooo much!! Wish I had found your video 3 new pumps ago!! Lol
Thank you so much for making this video and checking with the pool company!! I couldn’t for the life of me figure out why in the world my pump wasn’t working when it worked just fine last summer. I replaced my ceramic rod with this brass one and it works great. Thank you again so much!
Thank you for this. My pump did this within the first 3 days. Saved my sanity. Cheers man For those whose pumps arent working, the motor is completely encase so if your pump is not working its probably a 90%+ chance its this
Old pin was snapped Put the new pin in turned it on it hummed for a few seconds no water pumped then nothing, Prior to the new pin it would at least go on. It was worth a try but this is a piece of sh*t . When you start looking for new pump parts etc after 4 months and see so many people with the same issues well like I said, POS. Thank you for the video very kind of you to help people out. Part 2: edited the next day OK next day I took it apart again. I must have done something wrong with top washer for 1 thing. Also in video I didn't realize at bottom of shaft there is a washer. I also had a shaft from a pool from several years ago. I cut it to recommended size and started over. Boom ! Pump kicked in immediately and works better than ever. HUGE SAVINGS as I was not thrilled about buying new pump at almost what the pool cost. However this does not change my thoughts as stated above re: this thing : It still is a POS when you need to replace pump parts after a few months . It's common as we see here. Fortunately I and others were very lucky to find this video !! Thanks again for this video.
So here we are during covid pandemic & if you can find a filter replacement...major price gouging going on, ugh! I came across your video and wad able to fix yhe pump! Big thank you!!!
So, I've had mine up since the end of May it recently stopped working and was just humming my ceramic rod was not broke but taking it apart and cleaning the pump out it self and taking all these parts off in this video actually just made it work again. So this video is very very helpful!!
I had this problem today opened it up and my rod had water balloons n hair stuck on it. Took all that off my rod was not broken i put it all back in and it work just fine. Thanks your video help me alot. It all took me like 10min n got it back to work.
Thank you for making this video!! Most helpful! I found the broken ceramic pin and I'm headed to Lowe's in the morning with a snapshot of your receipt w/ dimensions of the brass pin. You saved me so much time, aggravation and money. BLESS YOU !!😊
I talked to a person that works for that company and they suggest to run the pump 6 hrs a day, to NOT use a timer and specially don't run it when ppl are swimming it makes the motor overwork, if you want to avoid buying another brass rod or motor and last a long time you need to follow the instructions:) but I really LIKE this video it saves a lot of money.... Thank u sir 🙂😉
And it’s done, mine cracked into 3 pieces, little tiny piece was in a upper rubber seal. I cut it on 3 5/16” length inserted and it’s working like new again, nice and quiet, thanks again😀🤛👍
3 days i have been trying to figure our where that plug went and just come across your video thanks… but what was the little rod Called you bought for the rotor motor? Thanks.
The best video yet on this pump and pool! Awesome! I also dropped the plug into the pool! We replaced the GFCI plug bc ours got wet and stopped working. But the pump is rattling and this might be why. Thank you!
thank you. i was able to fix my pump after watching this video. the shaft and impeller had broken on mine so after buying those 2 pieces it was a quick fix.
@@sharonjohnson7152 I've actually bought 2. Both online. One was from ebay and the other was from the polygroup website.. but its getting harder to find the right impellers that don't cost half the price of the pool.
Also I commented at the end of the last summer so I didn't have to use it much at that time. Since opening the pool this year I bought the 2nd impeller and have went through probably 20 shafts. They keep wearing down after a few days so My husband ended up buying a stock of the brass and he cuts them to size and replaces it every few days when the pump quits working
Thanks for the tip! Worked great! And saved a lot of $! Did notice our rod was 3in. And needed to make a little point at the end so it will stand up and rotate! Thanks so.much!
Thank you sir! Thanks to inflation, 5 years later that $3.04 brass rod is now $6.48. Still much cheaper than replacing a pump, but pricing double in 5 years??? That's insane.
Thank you for videoing this. I have the same pump, and it just started making a racket and the water isnt pushing out. I bet you this is exactly what's wrong with mine.
Ok my question is how do you get that bottom back on with it not leaking? I’m having trouble. I have a rubber ring too that goes around the pump in the canister but I can’t figure out how to stop it from leaking
How did you get the black round rubber cover to stay to keep the water from flowing into the skimmer mine will not stay on. Thank you for this helpful video but ended up upgrading to a sand filter pump, definitely im spending less in chemicals and electricity. I still need to know how in the heck that rubber piece stays on...thanks again
Nice upgrade. If you leave the rubber cover on a flat surface sitting in the sun for an hour or 2, it really softens it up and allows it to hold better. Although not guaranteed, but better. Mine falls off occasionally as well.
Mine doesn't have a gasket, but there is 1 of 2 places where it can go. 1. Inside the locking ring for when it is sealed against the housing. Or 2. Around the base of the actual pump, where it sits against the housing to creat a seal. I hope that helps, if not, maybe someone else with a gasket can assist. Good luck.
I just got my kids a pool last month and the pump just stopped yesterday! The humming it was doing makes sense now! Thank you for the step by step video I'm going to try this tommorow.
Ours came with a rubber black circle ring for in the bottom where exactly is that suppose to be? Our filter is leaking water at the bottom seems like the ring may not be in the right spot or something.
So this might be a silly question but the black mat that came with the pool to stop the water from going to the pump so that you could take it apart I cannot get mine to stay in that hole how did you do that because I really don't want to have to drain the water below the pump?
I figured this out before watching this video but it clarified it. A week after buying the pool that little rod snapped and the manufacturer was going to honor the warranty and send a new pump but they wanted me to take a picture of the receipt and take a picture of the pump with the cord cut with scissors🤦🏾♂️ and they would deliver one in ten days
@@millermatic140 what you should do is use the pump for this summer, than at the end of the season, cash in on the warranty and get the new pump 👍. Good luck
😢 im gonna need the entire rotor as mine just stopped taking in water emptied out the skimmer and found 4 pcs broken pcs that look like they go to that propeller looking thing. On another note your video will now help me just take apart the entire thing and replace that rotor unit thanks!!
@@bobganoosh5520 thanks! now i see that they sell the entire rotor however what is actually broken is the propeller looking things is that pc alone replaceable?
@@lisettemedina4536 I see they do sell certain impeller by themselves, which shows certain rotor assemblies are capable of swapping out the broken impeller. But I don't know if that requires a special tool or if it applies to your model pool pump.
@@bobganoosh5520 I see! Ok I think my best route is to just get the entire pc and call it a day I believe Amazon has one for about 40 bucks I just hope It will fit into my SFX 1500+ unit although reviews do say it does! Wish me luck!!! 🙏
Thanks for your video you really saved us. During covid-19 it's hard to get anything and the pool is something the kids can do. We able to fix ours with a steel pin my husband found in the garage. AWESOME 👍
Awesome. Glad to hear. I would suggest checking the steel pin a few times throughout the summer just to verify it doesn't rust/corrode. Not sure how steel does in the water. Happy swimming 👍
Bob, thank you for the thorough explanation and R & I instriction. As an engineer, I can say that ferromagnetic steel would probably be a poor choice but a non-magnetic stainless alloy would probably hold up well. Understanding that Aluminum might be too weak in bending, I am wondering how the brass has held up.
Thank you, I was ging to buy another pump, we got three seasons out of the original. When the propeller is shot (no blades) does the power not work? I have zero power in the pump now that the blades are all broken.
In my experiences, I found that the pump loses power when the rotor assembly gets stuck/jammed by some sort of blockage (hair, leaves, debris). In this case, a small piece of plastic from the rotor blades could have found it's way inside. So try removing the entire assembly, cleaning and re-inserting. Then see if you have power. Ultimately, you are going to need a new rotor assembly. If it still doesn't power on, could be the GFCI cord. Hope that helps. Good luck .
Thank you for posting this! is there a washer at the bottom part of the pump where the impeller sits? I don't see one if they are I see the ceramic one at the top? Thank you again for posting this fix!
I have the sfx600. It looks the same, the shaft was fine. Mine keeps tripping the gfci. I am wondering if the impeller is not spinning correctly causing it to trip. Thanks for the video!
If the GFCI keeps tripping, I wonder if you have another electronic item on that same circuit. Like something in the garage or even front porch. Even though outlets are separate, some could be on the same circuit causing an overload then tripping the gfci. If not that, then possibly debris (hair, leaves, bugs) might get into the rotor assembly. Hope that helps.
Thank you!! Just to add on, i did not have the rubber stopper. You can make this repair without removing the pump if you dont mind getting your arm wet. Thanks again!!
@@erinblackburn278 So I checked the piece that he’s talking about in the video and mine was still intact. I bought a replacement plug from Amazon it was about $16 and now it’s good as new!!!
@@erinblackburn278 great info from Rachel about the GFCI replacement. But before replacing the electrical, verify that the rotor assembly isn't locked up by hair or a twig/leaves. If the rotor can't turn, the pump will not turn on. It does not take much to stop these pumps.
I was about to buy a pump for 180.00 but then i saw this video. Im going to try ro fix my pump this weekend ill let you know the results. Im excited for this 4 dollar fix vs 180
It doesn't go all the way in. There should be a little clearance between the rotor and base. But make sure all parts are clean. Maybe squeeze the rotor assembly with needle nose pliers, continue to twist/spin it until the magnet grabs and pulls the piece into place. That's really all I can offer. Good luck.
Hola Robert! i have the same pool , the pump turn on but it didnt make that work with the water, look that need to be more powerful to throw water up . its was that what happened to you?.
Hi Robert, I saw your video and tried it but my pump still doesntbwork. What diameter is the rod you bought, I had to get one that was a hair smaller than the ceramic rod. Tia for the help.
The rod is 1/8". If you put a new rod/shaft and its still not working, it could be that the ends of each rod are rough with burrs. Ensure that both ends are completely smooth. Also, make sure your rod/shaft is the correct length. Too short it will not pump, too long the cap will not close. Good luck.
Some mechanical type people are willing to look into why something failed, and a little investigation is all that it takes sometimes to discover what the problem is/was. This is what I did because I knew it would be at least a 100 buck to get a new pump and an 2 hour drive to get one. Glad I found this video. My first attempt to fix the pump I tried an old drill bit, but i knew it would eventually rust (not good). So I did exactly as this video suggested and pump works fine again.
Another person was having a similar issue. There was no trick for me. Just didn't get on camera because I needed both hands and had to pause the camera. Just continue spinning in or maybe try pushing it while gripping with the players.
