SGB Play: Super Smash Bros. Melee - Part 1 

"I've seen John last up to 200%" The legitimate fear in Marks voice made me lose it hahah.

I love this game to death, but the cult-like following is really unnerving.

This game took me a while to get into, not because I didn't like it, but I had a PS2 growing up. It wouldn't be until elementary school where two brothers invited me over to play Melee with them and their older brother. Needless to say, I was amazed. Thankfully, I had other friends with Gamecubes and another with Melee, allowing me to play with other people. It would be this other friend who would later give me his copy of Melee and having finally unlocked all characters and stages over the summer, I'm incredibly grateful for the game. If I had more controllers, I'd play this with my friends to death.

Everyone's bitching and arguing in the comments about which Smash game is better or if Melee is overrated, and I'm just here wondering what the hell is up with the way Matt pronounced "Eliwood".

Yeah, I'm hoping for the same! The fact that the whole development team is giving feedback (as opposed to just Sakurai alone) on balancing and gameplay should help things turn out well in the end

Melee is still my second favorite Smash game, right behind Smash 4.

when i went to goodwill one time i found a gamecube for $10 and i got it and when i went home a copy of melee was in it and was like oh yesss!!!!!!! that was so lucky to get a copy for free

Nintendo should release Super Smash Bros. Melee on the Virtual Console for the Wii U. And maybe with better resolution and online as well, that would be awesome. C:

You know what, it is funny in hindsight how fortunate my case with Eternal darkness was. Like with Elliot, I got that game black label, CiB for 19.95€ mint condition (albeit still used) from my local mom 'n' pop video rental/game store. I was chatting with the casheer about how this game is on pretty high demand, so months later I come back to the store, see another copy of the game & suddenly the price has been jacked up to 49.95€. It makes me wonder if the conversation we had ended up being the cause of that. Considering that I wasn't as impressed as I thought I was gonna be (It's a good, spooky kind of game, but it didn't scare me but once with that bathtub), I'm happy to have gotten it for a price like that. If only I was that fortunate with Smash bros melee. Same thing as with Eternal darkness, only someone swooped the thing from under my nose when I was waiting for my monthly allowance. I'll never get that chance back, considering how even the 50€ copy that came later was also taken away almost instantly. **Sigh** At least I still have you, Brawl.

This is my opinion but I always felt that Mewtwo in this game felt really sluggish and not very versatile. He has okay movement, a good double jump but almost useless attacks. His C-stick, A and B button attacks are weak and really under-damaging. Again, just my opinion.

This is the one Smash game I'm missing. I need to buy it soon.

Love Melee, spent countless hours on it as well, just couldn't get the awesome feel from brawl that i got from it. (Maybe cuz they dumbed down my favorite characer fox) Either way Melee for the win! They need to make the gameplay like this again, along with the gamemodes and characters of Brawl and we got an even better game!

I've played Brawl the most, but before that I went over to my friend's house. He and his two brothers put in Melee. I had no idea what it was. Then I was unbelievably happy.

Fun Fact: The best known method to get Mewtwo is as followed: Take 2 controllers and set the match with 3 stock, no time limit, no items, Pokemon Stadium stage. Have the two characters stand in the center of the Pokeball in the center of the stage. Don't pause the game and leave them there overnight. When you return, kill the other off, and if done correctly, Mewtwo should appear and fight the winner. This method is incredibly long, but efficient.

This game was my childhood. I never got any homework done 'cause my friends and I played this all day long.

I played the hell out of this game back in elementary school. Despite being in like 1-3rd grade when i really played it (like every day) i was pretty good, being able to beat 3 level 9's and adults. Now...where did that skill go?? I still am good and can beat a lot of people at school, but most people don't play much....anyways as much time as I have put into this game, I like Brawl better because there are less clone characters and I actually like that they slowed it down a bit.

Ah, Melee. So many memories. My best character is Mewtwo. No joke, he's hard to play and they really made some dumb decisions with him, but his throws are killer, his Neutral Air is great for juggling, Shadow Ball keeps 'em guessing, and his Forward Air hits and hurts like a runaway truck. Dark Galaxy is also great if they come from above.

And just like from Super Smash Bros., every Stage 1 in any level, John kicks off the playthrough with a win.

Well, the reason people like Melee more, is that Melee is much faster paced; and a lot of characters became worse during the switch over to Brawl. (characters became weaker, slower, certain moves removed, etc). In addition, for a good 7 years, Melee is what we had. So many people were and are much more accustomed to Melee, and so the changes and slowed-down gameplay of Brawl stand out to them.

I spent 7 YEARS playing this game before Brawl came out.SEVEN YEAAARS Melee is that AWESOME

I here ya. I had this game and all the kids in the neighborhood challenged me as much as they could. They never won though, I was too skilled. But, when Brawl came out, my Smash obsession kicked into overdrive. I was unbeatable and I actively sought out challengers to test myself. Now, that I'm out of school, the obsession has died down a bit, but Smash is still my fav series (Brawl is the best) and I'm still really good at the game. Like a Pro football player retiring and becoming a coach

I think the reason is that Melee made a lot of improvements from the original game, and fixed a lot of it's problems. Because of this, Brawl didn't have as many areas that it needed to correct, so while Brawl does fix some of Melee's problems, people have a better first impression of Melee because it was a drastic improvement over the original, as opposed to Brawl being a minor improvement.

That moment you realize that this LP will be longer than the LP for the original because of the number of stages. :D

When Squirtle's coming at you with its spinning shell attack. It's for more complicated gameplay. It can also push someone away from the edge when they're trying to jump back if you do it right.

Personally, I think Brawl was the best Smash I have ever seen but Melee is awesome just because of fond memories sitting at my TV with my brother and two other friends at the age of 7. Good times.

I don't like how everybody in the comment section is getting salty because someone doesn't have the same opinion as someone else does I personally think melee is the best but I won't pass up playing brawl,64,or smash 4 with my friends, why can't we just be happy that we all like the same game. Melee is my favorite game in the series, partly due to the fact that Fox in Melee is my favorite character to use. Last year at my friend's house my 11 year old file was accidentally deleted (used since I was 4 years old). Needless to say, I was pretty pissed off the rest of the night.

Melee is the best so far of the series. Brawl improved graphically, more items, but the smash ball is overused which kills the game and the gameplay is slower. Put some of the brawl characters in melee and i guarantee its going to be a better game

This game was my first super smash bros game i played then when my wii would not let a second game cube play i got brawl and loved the series more.

Dude that's exactly the reason =) They need to combine the game-play of melee with the game-modes, characters of brawl. Here's hoping the new smash bros does that.

It was a toss-up between this, Animal Crossing, SA2 Battle, and Custom Robo for my childhood Gamecube gaming. I was happy to be a loner with that line up.

Oddly enough this is the only game I've yet to play yet out of the series. Though I am going to a gaming convention so I may be able to get it.

I really hope they do adventure mode, classic mode, and all star mode. they could each take turns doing it or just have the person who did the best and won the most matches play it.

Fun fact of the day: Sonic is the reason for the delay of brawl from October 2007 to February 2008.

I never got used to the gamecube controller when playing melee, so when brawl came around I used the wii remote and nunchuck. Everyone always wonders why I can play like that. My only response is that it just felt natural. XD

At least I hear he has a lot of Support options. So, at least Roy gets the ladies...assuming you don't immediately make him and Lilina a thing. XD

On an absolute technical level, Brawl beats Melee. It has more content, a fantastic soundtrack and a large majority of the modes in this game are Co-Op. I also find the trophy descriptions much more entertaining and interesting in Brawl than Melee, and adding that to stuff like being able to take snapshots whenever and make your own stages, you can spend a good few hours in the vault alone. But in the end, when it comes to the fighting in terms of balance and pace, Melee is the best. Hands down.

This is bringing back so many memories!

I prefer Brawl over Melee any day, but my favorite of all them is Super Smash Bros., where I honestly believe the gameplay is at the perfect speed as opposed to Melee, which was too fast, and Brawl, which was too slow. You should try Melee out, though; it still is an awesome game! :D

This was my Childhood, it was the first game I got for the Gamecube. Played it with my father all the time, no matter how great Brawl is or how good people try and make it sound nothing can top those memories.

Well, considering Mario got a final smash like everyone else added to his move-set, I think it makes up for it.

god damn, Matt doesn't know a THING about competitive smash lmao. Gannon is better than Falcon, Kirby in Melee is better than Kirby in 64, Sonic in Brawl is Top 10? makes for good laughs though.

What a coincidence I just unlocked everything in melee today.

I don't mind it too much in Blazing Sword (Fire Emblem here in North America) or Sacred Stones because there are many more Supports that don't require you to stand by for 80 turns, most of the conversations are much more interesting than in Sword of Seals, and you got a library that record all of them. Plus, in Sacred Stones, you can cheese the fuck out of the system by using the Tower of Valni, making the process a bit less tedious in the long run.

For some reason, I always seemed to choose Roy even though I knew that Marth was better. =p

While true, the loudest voices about Melee > Brawl tend to be from the Competitive side of the game. where it's Battlefield/Final destination stages only, no items advanced techniques etc. all those things that made melee's competitive scene, and most of it was gone when brawl was made. needless to say, the melee competitive players are always the loudest in saying melee is better. though I agree, for differing reasons, there is always going to be that large silent group who like brawl more.

Eternal Darkness $80? No, but the cheapest I could find it was $40 so you still got it for a decent price

I remember when I got this game when I was 7 I accidentally scratched the heck out of it and just got it again used for $15.00.

He may have felt that the controls were better, while you may have hated them. I feel that Melee and Brawl will always have a balanced ''war'' between each other. Some people like brawl, some people don't. It's all opinions, it's a storm of opinions.

I kinda want to see a tournament between them. And maybe a team match or 2.
