The seppuku scene is all about facial language, facial conversation. It was a silent 'goodbye, my friend. It was an honor" from both their sides. Toranaga actually was sad and blinked back tears for he knew what was coming, it was a pre-planned show for the others. Such a masterpiece! The actors are amazingly magnificent.

I think Hiromatsu guessed Tironaga's plan. I feel like they know each other so well, Hiromatsu figured it out and made a play to solidify his plan. I don't think Tironaga ever planned on sacrificing Hiromatsu, but he understood what Hiromatsu was doing when he started his act. You can see the tears in his eyes. That's also why Hiromatsu told Buntaro not to give up on Tironaga even if it looks like he gave up.

Buntaro is a complex character. He is hard to like but also hard to absolutely hate. The actor portraying him is doing an amazing job. I hope this leads to other projects for him where he can continue to show his range.

Well, she's a great Onna-Musha, so she understands the way of the samurai and their responsabilties as she's a warrior at the service of Toranaga. And now will understand why his grand father insisted in her living after their lords victory, of course we'll see if her and Mariko survive the combat to enjoy the new world or if they die gloriously in the battle.

I don’t think Hiroyuki Sanada has ever been the main lead of any show or even movie, at least not here in the US. If not it’s been long due and he has absolutely killed it in Shogun. Honestly, all the actors have just been killing their roles. Especially given the fact that they have to convey so much using only expressions and body language rather than words. The understated dialogue combined with the masterful facial expressions and body language is excellent. The exchange between Toranaga and Hiromatsu was a master class in acting in both dialogue and expression. The fact that the Japanese language sounds so impactful, especially when emotion is injected into it, just brings that much more to the scene. If this show were in English it would have been such a disappointment, it definitely wouldn’t have had near the same impact. So many actors deserve awards for their performances. This show is definitely one of the best ever made, and especially in modern TV.

Its a horrible metric to choose and pick an artist based on their awards. Wow just wow. The way sanada-sama's voice broke when he talked about his fallen friend. OMG amazing acting and tension. Was balling during the tense scenes. Buntaro had the worst week ever!

Dude… Hiroyuki Sanada. Talk about being able to act!! He did an incredible job in being able to actually sell that scene at the end there. That is, of course, if I’m reading in between the lines in the sense that he was actually trying to do that. He knew his friend had to make the sacrifice in order to move up on the board for the campaign of what’s to come in the future. I can only now imagine what that scene is going to be like with Fuji when she learns of what happened.

Unrequited love is painful, but nobody owes you their feelings, and Buntaro should have accepted that Markio's heart remained unchanged after all these years. Blackthrone's presence just reinforced how unhappy she felt married to him.

If Buntaro hadn’t treated Mariko like shit, berating her due to her lineage, and just overall being a terrible person and husband to her, then maybe Mariko would have felt differently. Years of abuse hardened her heart towards him, and now she just doesn’t care, at all, about him. Perfect scene to show her complete disdain for him without needing yelling or extreme emotion. Just one simple statement conveyed all we need to know and destroyed Buntaro.

So an interesting question that was probably left intentionally ambiguous: did Nagakado attack the half brother on his own, or was it discussed with Toranaga in advance? The answer to that question has a huge impact on how to feel about Toranaga. His thank you to Nagakado at the pyre was vague enough that it can be interpreted either way.

Nagakado's death gave them 49 days right? If he had succeeded in killing Toranaga's brother (he was certainly trying to) it would've been a very different outcome. I'm not sure how Toranaga could've planned this

Yabushige would not leave Edo aboard John Blackthorne’s ship unless he was sure that Toranaga was going to surrender. Toranaga wanted Yabushige to move the ship and the weapons, but it had to appear like it was all Yabushige’s decision and not a war move by Toranaga. At the end of Shōgun episode 8, when Yabushige and Blackthorne were already aboard the Englishman’s ship, Lady Mariko arrived with a message from Toranaga. Whatever Toranaga’s battle plan is, it involves John Blackthorne and his ship.

There is a proverb in Japan that says, ``Before deceiving your enemy, first deceive your friends.'' The death of his son (so he doesn't even attend the funeral) and the seppuku of his chief vassal are all part of his ploy to say, ``I have no intention of going against Osaka.'' The chief vassal saw through the lord's plans and made the plan a success with his own death.

There were 11 sailors of the Erasmus left - including John - after the Captain-General had shot himself and one of their mates was boiled alive be Yabushige. The ship and its crew is Dutch not Skandinavian. Easy to remember because the ship is named after Erasmus of Rotterdam. a famous Dutch philosopher and pioneer of enlightenment, the very principle the constitution of the United States is based on.

I think the Daiyoin is the one who drugged Ochiba and helped her pregnant. According to Ochiba, it was a harrowing experience. However, I think it's complicated for Ochiba because that also gave her power and status. Without the Daiyoin, she being a concubine without bearing son(s) would have given her a precarious life.

This episode was really intense, just the build up of it all. Even going so far as to confuse the viewers because I fully believed that Toranaga was faking and he really had a plan, and then Toranaga just sits back and watches his best friend Hiromatsu commit sepuku and at that point I think damn maybe he really is done for because no way he just let that happen, then they show he really does have a plan. Craziness all around; sidenote Toranaga giving the church a patch of land right next to the land for the brothel had me laughing so hard, a big fat F U to the church.

I do feel like I appreciate what this show has achieved in terms of rounding out Buntaro and making him feel more human and giving greater nuance to their relationship. That being said though no amount of coldnesss on her part makes beating her, or being abusive towards her okay.

My headcanon is that Hiromatsu intentionally made Buntaro “second” him and denied Buntaro’s death to teach him a lesson. He could have picked anyone like Omi or Yabushige but he chose Buntaro because Buntaro is his son and he wanted Buntaro to understand how Mariko feels.

That’s the exact same thought that popped into my mind when I watched that scene for the first time!! I really do think he was tired of watching his son destroy himself and his family and treating Mariko poorly for the past actions of her father that he wanted him to know exactly what she felt like. But goddamn this guy went through the wringer this episode!!! I n Japan there are famous formulaic poems that describes the personalities of the three major generals. (Hototogisuー Lesser cuckoo ) Nobunaga: If it won't cry, kill it, Hototogisu. Hideyoshi: If it won't cry, let it cry. Ieyasu: If it won't sing, let's wait until it does I think the nature of Ieyasu (Toranaga) is fully depicted in the drama Shogun.

is awesome to watch the Buntaro character: a real person, a human with light and shadows. He is an asshole, but the circunstances made him. he feels alone, he cant show his emotions, he do the job that is encomended to him everytime, but the one who have to support him doesnt do it. So he resent that, he hate that, and pour that hate on the weaker. The actor is awesome.

In Japan at the time, there was a custom called ``諌死'' in which a vassal would die to warn a lord if he failed. This led Osaka to believe that Toranaga was serious about surrendering, and that he was willing to do so even if his vassals died.　Also, the ``person who cannot die'' refers to Toranaga. Historically, Toranaga was a feudal lord, but since he was an only child, he always made many sacrifices to survive the country. That's how they made peace.

虎長に降伏する氣などありません、それは廣正も語っています。大阪側を欺く為に降伏するように見せかけているのです。そうしないと全員に死の危険が。大阪側のスパイが周りにいる事を考え家臣に署名させるなど敵を欺く為、廣正は、疑われないよう降伏する事に抗議するかのように命を差し出しました。全て虎長の為。虎長もこれを理解し、切腹をとめる事はできなかった、心の中で泣いていたでしょう。虎長の野心は変わってはいない。二人だけが分かり合える悲しい場面でした。

Mariko and buntaro relationship is toxic on both ends. Hes definitely a rash person and has angre issues. He knows he was married way avobe his league and he adores her. You just have to notice the way he looks at her. That makes him unable to grant her death. He loves her in a selfish way and don't want to loose her even if that's what she wants. Sho on the other side is obsessed with dying, but it's too proud to do it in an unhonorable way. She could kill herself any moment without permission but she wants to do it honorably. She knows his husband's flaws and pushes his buttons trying to get killed by his hand. It's all a big messy tragedy.

I 100% think that was Hiromatsu's idea, and he proposed it to Toranaga before the meeting. There was something about the eye-acting when you watch it again knowing what Toranaga revealed to Mariko in their ending scene.

Although, I'm assuming from Mariko's reaction a few episodes back after he hit her, that it wasn't the first time Buntaro had used his wife as a punching bag. She obviously felt her verbal brutality was warranted.... And look how cutting her words were & how expertly she OWNED him without cowardly lifting a hand to _him._ 😊

Toranaga gave a church site next to the brothel area. This means not allowing the construction of a church from the beginning. Hiramatsu's seppuku is not begging for his life, but a plea in exchange for his life. Loyalty refers to vassals like Hiramatsu. The emotions of this episode are also felt by Japanese people. The content was quite risqué, difficult to understand, deep, and interesting.
