The original Shogun series from 1980 played a huge part in who I am. It also changed TV. I showed this to my wife and she said there are many famous Japanese actors int his not just the one or two I know. The Japanese sounded right to me too but I don’t know of they are going period accurate Japanese or not. Looking at the cast list they used a Japanese actors. Also the main lead female character is Japanese actress who lived abroad and is native English and Japanese speaker. She was in Ninja Assassin and the TV show Pachinko

The last line: 覚悟はできておりまする is theatrically “passable” Theatrically passable because it wants audiences with a passing familiarity of Japanese to notice that it ends with Warring States period まする rather than contemporary Japanese ます. Strictly speaking, though, the line is wrong: the construction ております didn’t exist during the Warring States Period, and the correct construction would have been ていまする. Furthermore, during the Warring States Period, the word 覚悟 had 5 meanings, of which currently only 2 survive in contemporary Japanese. There is only a one in five chance that someone from 戦国時代 would have understood this line if someone said it to them. However, the line sounds pretty cool for the audience with passing familiarity of Japanese, so it’s sufficient for the purposes it set out to be.

I didnt know about the dubbing on American stuff coming to Japan. I always wondered why IP Man seemed to be dubbed over even in Chinese.

You are not wrong about the white nose thing. So many Japanese and Koreans now do surgery to have bigger noses, which to me is nuts. In Japan, if someone says to you, you have a tall nose, it's seen as a compliment. We all want what we don't have it seems. We all find attractive what we don't have also

Well, to be honest, the Roman Nose had been spread throughout Western Europe before this takes place, so it doesn't surprise me that they would be seen that way.

If this adaptation is anywhere close to the novel. The whole “white savior” thing is minimal. The Japanese characters are really the focus of the story. From Toranaga, Mariko, Yabu, Omi, Ishida, Buntaro, Hiromatsu, etc. Yes, Blackthorne is the main character but the reader/watcher is journeying thru the politics, culture & intrigue of feudal Japan along with Blackthorn.

the stereotype of white people with long nose spread through asia actually not just Japan. its certainly true where I was from. Near the end at like 8:53. In my opinion being that stoic is very dramatic.

imagine stopping a video to describe in detail and making sure to replay footage of a physical feature of someone that you explain was historically used as a racial insult as if you were watching cartoons made in the US in the 1930's depicting africans while replaying and making fun of your actual features... imagine doing that.
