[Video Description: A white femme person with dark red hair stands calmly infront of a light coloured background, we can just see their head and shoulders, they say...
"I’m going to show you how to take a small blood sample for the SH:24 blood test and share some top tips that will make it even easier."
The screen goes dark and reads "warm up" in white writing. The person says...
"It’s best to do the test when your body is warm as this helps blood flow.
To warm up just before you do the test try taking a hot bath or shower, hold a warm drink for a few minutes, do some physical exercise, or run your favoured hand under warm water for a few minutes."
When the person says "hot drink", they hold up a mug in two hands.
The camera switches to show a white surface, with a blood tube, a lancet, two alcohol wipes and two plasters laid out.
The person says...
"Find a clean flat surface, and lay the test kit out."
The person picks up the blood sample tube and says...
"Keep standing up, with your hand below your waist."
The video cuts to different shots of the following instructions. The person says...
"Take out the sample tube and remove the yellow cap."
"Stand the tube in the closed packaging."
"Twist and pull the blue tip off of the lancet."
"Wash and dry your hands and clean your chosen finger with an alcohol wipe."
The person points to their 2nd and 3rd finger and says...
"You're going to take blood from one of these two fingers"
The video continues to show each of the instructions while the voice says...
"Press the top of your finger with your thumb, so that the tip of your finger turns pink."
"With your thumb still in place, press the lancet firmly against the middle of the tip of your finger and push hard."
"You will feel a tiny prick."
"Wipe away the first drop of blood with a clean tissue."
"Gently massage your finger from the knuckle to the tip and allow the drops of blood to fall into the tube."
The video cuts to a view of the full blood tube and the person says…
"It's important that you fill the tube to the 600 line. This usually takes about 16 drops."
"If you struggle to get enough blood, you can use another lancet to repeat with another finger."
The video follows the instructions again as the person says…
"Push the yellow cap firmly back onto the tube."
"Gently turn the tube upside down five times."
"Place it back into its protective packaging."
The video shows the blood sample tube in it’s protective casing, showcasing the labels that are attached and the person says…
"Your samples are already labeled with a unique code so you don't need to write anything on them."
The video shows the person putting the samples in the return envelope and the person says...
"Put your samples back into the prepaid UN3373 return envelope, along with the white lab card."
The screen goes dark and helpful tips show up in white writing. They read:
Helpful tips:
- Relax
- Warm up (have a hot shower or bath just before)
- Stay standing and keep your arm straight, with your hand below your waist.
- push the lancet firmly against your finger.
- Aim for the middle of your finger not too close to your fingernail.
- If you're nervous, ask someone to help you.
The next screen reads:
If you would like help or advice, text us or email:
07860 041 233 | sh24.info@nhs.net
Finally the screen changes to the SH:24 logo.]

Having just done this today - here's my tips/thoughts: 1. The video shows her pricking her finger at the tip in the centre but the info card that comes with the pack has in bold to prick at the SIDE of your fingertip "where the skin is softer". I did the latter and it worked fine. 2. The lancet is different to other types where it's a needle pin prick. This one actually slices a tiny cut (obviously to allow more blood to come out - but don't worry it's still come out quite slow drop by drop). 3. Follow the tips to warm up by all means but the best thing I found to get blood drops flowing quickly was to lean slightly down to the side as if you were going to pick something up with your hand (the one you've pricked) while keeping your arm straight and you can feel the blood flowing down more and droplets form much easier/quicker. 4. I found it easier to hold the tube in my hand up to the cut rather than resting it on a table and trying to squeeze drops in (still keep arm mostly straight) - the latter way was very awkward and I ended up missing the tube a few times. 5. If a drop is forming but not dropping, you can just wipe it against the inside of the tube and it will flow down the inside - much quicker than waiting for each drop to fall in. 6. Murphy's law that you'll have spending a while to get the drops in but once you're done it'll start bleeding much quicker! 😂 Good luck!! p.s. Now I can see why Theranos were trying to invent something that just worked off 1 drop of blood 🤣

I just did it: 1) use the side of your video as shown on the card, not the video 2) make sure you’re warm - it’s summer and super hot so when I pricked SO much blood came out, I honestly could’ve easily filled two tubes to 600 without trying but it’s 30 degrees out and I’m BAKING. So that’s why. The process was so fast for this reason. If you’re cold so do jumping jacks, get ur hand under hot water, get sweaty, it’ll be so much easier. 3) I’m fine with needles when the doctors do it but I REALLY struggled to do it on myself. Took about half an hour. I mentally couldn’t get myself to prick my hand. I used a ballpoint clicky pen and pressed that a few times on a different finger to get used to that sensation, that REALLY helped. Then I was holding my hand against my torso, with the lancet on the finger. I kept pressing as if clicking and unclicking the pen without going all the way. I just couldn’t go all the way and prick but doing that motion fast enough I accidentally did go all the way and the prick came out! It was just a pinch but also a shock for me- think I needed to not see it coming or I wouldn’t have done it. Then the blood flowed oh my lord SO much, if you get queasy around blood like me I just focused on filling the tube, didn’t look at my finger as much as the drops just filling the tube and focused on that goal. Before I closed the lid or anything I used tissues to clean my finger and put the plaster on immediately. Then I could relax and put it all in the envelope. I know it’s a small prick but doing it on YOURSELF is scary, I should’ve just got my flatmate to do it on me. Try to just do it mindlessly and don’t think too much about the prick or needle going into your skin. You’ve got this!!!

What also helped me to get more blood, was to shake the hand you are gonna use real vigorously. Or even throwing your hand/arm in a windmill motion for a few seconds and immediately use the lancet. It helps much better.

Love the NHS. I suggest putting down some kitchen roll as there was a surprising amount of blood for such a tiny scratch. Nothing outrageous, I just wasn't expecting it! Not recommended if you can't cope with seeing blood, obviously, though a trusted someone could do it for you. Mine came within 2 days of ordering despite covid postal delays. Simple instructions, I just felt a sharp pinch. Made sure my finger was nice and warm beforehand and had no problems filling the tube. Comes with 3 lancets in case you need to redo.

I have done this test a couple of times before and this is the first time watching the video and I’m so glad I did. I only needed one lancet and filled the pot to 600 in about a minute. Usually I use all 3 lancets and still struggle then have sore fingers for a good week or so but not this time. I’ll always do it this way from now on
@Wipez
@Wipez 2 года назад
Okay here's my advice... Firstly, the lancet is impressively unpainful. Do not be scared. It hurts a little bit. When you remove it, you won't even feel pain as you draw blood. After my first prick, drawing 2 drops of blood was hard. I thought how the hell am I going to fill this? So I pricked my second finger, and this time, I moved the lancet a little aggressively in circles while it stabbed me, to literally make a more substantial cut. It was PERFECT that time... Make a effort to squeeze around your finger to draw the blood, it helps a lot. Also, you barely need a plaster. Maybe use one for an hour. A few hours after this test, you can BARELY feel that you did the test. Do not worry about injuring your fingers for typing or work related activities the next day. Use the large part of the lancet and not the lid like me, pushing it in hard into my finger like a dumbass. I guess that wasn't in the instructions because it was meant to be obvious. Have fun, and listen to a blood related song while you do it to lighten the mood, or enhance it >;) LOL

I did it today. It doesn't hurt! It feels like pressing and clicking the ball pen against your finger, once, pretty fast. The cut is clean and neat as well. I almost didn't collect to 400ml. It was hard on the middle finger even after I bath. I think I should have done the second one on the index finger. There was no blood on ring finger. I regret lossing my first drop of blood. I did it at the side of my fingers.

I did the blood test. Pricking the fingers in the middle left me with weird discomfort in my fingers and it was a bit more stingy than I expected. The pain is not that bad though completely tolerable. I only did it about 20mins ago so I can't say much more than that. Some comments say to try it at the side of your finger so maybe try that instead but overall pretty good experience. Only used 2 fingers and the second finger was way easier, I think because I got a little hang of it.

Had to do this today and It took me an hour. I couldn’t press the thing down on my finger as I was too scared. I’m not frightened of needles and have a large range of tattoos and piercings. Okay after reading the comments and psyching myself up I did the finger prick thing, Its literally like a regular finger prick, I made myself warm before hand and stood at the sink, wiped with one included alcohol wipe on my index finger on my non dominant hand (left for me), placed it against the table and pressed the pricking tool into the very Centre of my index finger. I wiped away the first drop of blood with another of the included alcohol wipes and then squeezed my finger really hard over the sink till it was dripping and then held the blood vial and dripped into it till it was just over 600. Then I sealed it up and shook it a bit 5 times and held a tissue on my finger till it stopped bleeding (this took quite a while for me). I absolutely hate doing pricks on my self but you just have to pretend its someone elses hand and just press hard with the tool. Very scary but you've got this

Well here is a late update,I did use one of these to get drops of blood in a small sample tube,I must admit these are very easy to use and also you feel very little pain, although because I struggles to get blood out my fingers j ended up having to use two if them, the first time I used one I felt find but by the time I had finished using the second one and finished getting the blood I needed well I felt very suck and dizzy which is usual for me with the site of blood and anything to do with needles, but these things are very easy to use and hardly any pain though.

So I followed the instructions in this video and pricked the side of my finger tip like some of the other commenters here advised but this only produced a very small amount of blood. I tried again with a different finger but with two fingers I was only able to get to just below the 400 line. I was going to try a third finger but the third lancet in the pack didn't work. On top of all this, I think the blood in the tube was starting to congeal by the time I put the cap on. I'm going to post it back anyway to see if they can work with it but I'm not holding my breath. So it seems that, while this is a good idea in theory, practically speaking it is difficult to give a blood sample at home, at least with the materials currently provided.

I really do not recommend doing this by yourself (or at all, since you can get it done for free by a nurse) if you're even a little bit squeamish. I consider myself pretty okay with blood so I thought I could make it just fine. Wrong. It's not the stabbing part as much as keep staring at your bloody finger, squeezing it and waiting for the blood to drop down. It can take ages and you will probably have to prick more than one finger. I tried all possible positions, none worked for me, so since I was also about to pass out I gave up.

If you have poor circulation this is almost impossible. Stand up and lean to the side with a hot water bottle on your hand, swing your arm around a good few times then prick your finger. i looked up sending samples under UN3373 and it says the outside packaging should be a solid cardboard construction ?

@SH-sexualhealthhoursaday 2 года назад
Hello, thanks for reaching out with your comment! Our current secondary packaging (the protective casing shown the video) is hard and leak-proof, to fulfil UN3373 requirement and properly protect your samples. We then use a soft envelope for ease of postage. We hope this helps! If you have any further questions, you can reach us best at sh24.info@nhs.net or on 020 3318 7609. Thanks, SH:24.

Same, I did it sitting because I usually feel a bit queasy when doing blood tests, but thought this one was a little finger prick so would be fine. Sadly not. At the point when I was supposed to be massaging blood out, I had to lie down completely flat and concentrate on breathing so as not to faint, heard ringing in my ears, and finally vomited. By the time I felt halfway normal again, my blood had congealed and I couldn't get any to flow put into the vial. I love the idea of this quick and easy test, and I'm really sad it didn't work for me. Unless I can find a way to stop myself fainting I won't be attempting it again any time soon!

This is just not neurodivergent friendly AT ALL. I have tried using these finger prick tests on myself so many times and I just can't. I usually get dizzy and frustrated after trying for a long time, and I can never fill the whole bottle. If you are neurodivergent and/or if you suffer from mental health and/or if you have a blood/needle phobia I do NOT suggest trying this by yourself.
