Notes: This song was published in the Ashwin number of 'Bharati' the year 1877-78 (1284B) along with four other songs written by Rabindranath who was merely sixteen years of age. Friends and relatives of the Thakurbari took the privilege of singing his songs and he was already popular among them as a teenage poet. Each Sunday a team lead by Jyotirindranath moved out in the name of hunting. Rabindranath in 'Jibonsmriti' has clearly elaborated about it.
... What we bothered the least in this hunting was the scarcity of dead or injured animals. We were out by early in the morning with loads of eatables that Bouthakurani used to prepare for us. ...
In fact, the team used to roam about without interest in particular. That the songs written by Rabindranath were cherished, is clear from the descriptions in various writings of Rabindranath and Jyotirindranath. In his 'Jibonsmriti' he describes -
... Somewhere at a farmhouse of a Hindu zamindar beside the Ganges once we had a picnic. ... After the feast the wind picked up and the storm started. Rajnarayan-babu stood at the ghat in a dramatic style started singing - 'Aaji unmad pabane ...', a newly composed song of Rabindranath. Gradually everybody else joined in the chorus with unmatched high spirit. The overall enthusiasm with throwing hands and body jerks had surely won over the storm. ...
It is evident from this story that Rabindranath had an immense popularity as a young poet at least among relatives and well-wishers. Similar description can be found in the 'Swadeshikata' chapter of 'Jibonsmriti' written by him.
... Not that he (Rajnarayan-babu) had a melodious voice yet the powerful display of his physical maneuvers along with the song had charged us and we all continued to sing with a very loud voice. As a commentary, at times happens to be stronger than a subject, the weakness of his voice was aptly suppressed by vicious and rhythmic movements of his hands and the head. The strong wind played havoc with his grey beard. We drove back to home late that night. ...
Description of the same incident in a similar manner explains how popular the songs of Rabindranath had become at his early age.
