I put castings on the substrate directly from the mold. Don't let them dry at all before applying. Titebond dries fast so the castings don't slide around. I made a few castings with hot glue but it took so much! I decided air dry clay was a cheaper choice. I was disappointed to see so much of the newspaper image covered up. Like you, I prefer to use the real thing in my projects when possible.
