Shackleton Blended Malt Scotch Whisky Review
This bottle was a lovely gift from one of our subscribers, Adrian. Thanks so much Adrian!!
The whisky is meant to be a recreation of the whisky Ernest Shackelton took on his 1907 Antartic expedition. We got a bit mixed up with our explorers and expeditions though! Oops! The whisky is a nice, light drinker but full enough flavoured and we wouldn't have guessed it was 40% abv. They do recommend you drink it over ice which we only realised after filming but we're not sure that's how we would have best enjoyed it anyway. And as Adrian says, its a really cool story!
Have you tried the Shackleton Blended Malt? Did you try it neat or with ice? How did you like it best? Did it make you want to take it on an Antarctic expedition? Or and Arctic one for that matter?! Let us know what you thought of it in the comments!
We do in person and virtual tastings. Follow the link to book on! We'd Love to see you there! callander-drinks-co.myshopify...

Love your video reviews ladies. I just want to correct you about Shackleton. He did not die on his expedition; in fact he rescued his entire crew after 2 years stranded on the ice. You are probably thinking of Scott who died before he could return from the south pole.

I was thinking that I hadn't heard that Shackleton had died on his expedition...

Thanks Robert! We did realised this after filming (we know more about Scott having been regular visitors to Dundee and the Discovery there) so I did correct us with a (misspelled!) caption underneath saying "Wrong Expedition! Oops!" as I realised while editing that we had the wrong guy! Shackleton did die on an expedition but not this one!

@@TheGrailTastings I missed this one a year ago. So now (2024) I'm sitting here, sipping my Shackleton, thinking "No he f**king didn't. What the deuce?" Glad it's been cleared up.

Great review of my favourite blend! Here’s a bit of the history… the whisky was found relatively recently (a decade or two back) under the floorboards of the “hut” that Shackleton and his team built on their first expedition to Antarctica. Their team lived there during their initial exploration and all returned safety from that expedition. Some years later, Shackleton attempted a second expedition, but never made it to the continent. Instead, their ship was frozen in ice for months and eventually crushed. Shackleton and his crew made an epic journey across the ice back to the sea in a converted lifeboat, aimed for an inhabited island (South Georgia) but missed it due to horrendous weather and landed on an uninhabited island (Elephant Island). A small crew then made another epic journey, sailing to the uninhabited side of South Georgia, crossing glacier covered mountains with no cold weather or mountain equipment, and somehow reached the whaling station on the other side of the island. A few weeks later, after several attempts, they rescued the Shackleton’s remaining crew on Elephant Island. It was remarkable that they all survived. Ironically, upon return to England, most of the crew signed up to fight in WW1 (even though they were exempt) and many didn’t survive. After several military appointments and the lecture circuit, Shackleton attempted a third journey to Antarctica but died of heart failure in early 1922 on South Georgie Island, where he was buried. There is some great reading around these expeditions and Shackleton’s life… which goes very well with Shackleton scotch!!

@@TheGrailTastings You’re most welcome. Antarctic history is amazing and the explorers that pursued it were indescribably fearless, tough, and capable. The reproduction of the scotch is a great way of promoting Shackleton and crew’s achievements. I only wish it was available in my home country, Canada. It was imported here for a short time several years ago, but is no longer available. I pick it up every time I come to Europe, most recently at the Amsterdam airport duty free when I was passing through this past summer. Had a wee dram last night after seeing your vid and writing the short history!

The etymology for "Arctic" comes from Greek arktos, meaning bear. This is probably akin to the Latin name for the two northern constellations, Ursa Major (Big Bear or Big Dipper) and Ursa Minor (Little Bear or Little Dipper). Antarctica comes from the Greek ante which mean opposite, i.e. on the opposite side of the globe from the Arctic. (Interestingly, arktos is Greek for bear and ursa is Latin for bear, so the binomial nomenclature for the brown bear being Ursa Arctos literally translates to bear bear. ) I believe the legendary nose himself, Richard Paterson, had a hand in formulating Shackleton's blend for Whyte & Mackay. One of the things I teach people in whiskey tastings is that whiskey was called the Water of Life because it brought so much more to the table than just intoxication. Our ancestors used it as a critical disinfectant and purifier, de-icer, solvent, thermometer, tool (e.g. spirit level), pain killer, medicine, tincture base, ingredient in food and drink and as a health tonic. It had so much value due not only to its many and varied uses but also to its extended shelf-life, unlike wine and beer which would spoil on extended journeys. In many instances, rum would serve similar uses depending on its availability. For Rachel, Justin Wilson used to tell this story he claimed was true. Where he lived in Louisiana, American Football was like a religion and people were very passionate about it, to say the least. He bragged to his friend that he got tickets to Sunday's game and his friend said he got two tickets as well. He asked his friend who he was bringing and his friend said he was going alone. He asked him, if he was going by himself, why would he buy two tickets. His friend told, him matter of factly, that he was going to get into a fight with the other team's fans, get thrown out and was going to use the second ticket to get back in.

Such interesting info as always! Yes I do believe Richard Paterson was the blender for this dram. I think Rachel may have to take a leaf out of Justin Wilson's book! 😂

This whisky is really bad.I had higher expectations towards it after watching a few reviews, even though they said it is not great. The history of this whisky was interesting to me so I wanted to find out how it taste. The smokiness is too intense, it makes it unbearable to drink. Im not sure if this was intentional and it is close to what the whiskey found on the ship tasted like or they just messed it up. I had to put some lemon in it and lots of ice to make it drinkable.
