It's finally summer and the shad are officially in! I have never been shad fishing and I was about to get a phenomenal introduction. We are on the Columbia River in Northern Oregon with guide Dave Maroon, we head upriver for a short ways and anchor up. He gets the rods in the water and hooks on no more than 2 minutes after we anchor. He has the spot, gear, and presentation dialed in. He caught the first fish so fast, we weren't ready and weren't even sure what was happening, it all happened so fast. After the first shad was landed, we started hooking up with doubles and triples, 2-3 fish on all the time. One after another after another, we piled up the shad like it was easy.
Fishing in the summer on the Columbia river can be rough when the wind has kicked in though, as we soon found out. When you see whitecaps on the water as the morning begins, it's going to be a rough one. Although it was windy and non ideal conditions, we caught 30 shad in one hour.
We then used the shad for sturgeon bait and in the next video we will see how the sturgeon like the plentiful fresh bait.
