Shadow was always a great father/brother figure. Just ask Mari- oh wait.

This is exactly why we need more Cream in the games, for interactions like this! Could you imagine if Shadow, or Rouge, or the Chaotix, or whoever was forced to be overly nice to and protective over a sweet little girl (kinda like how Blaze was)? That is just ripe with great moments! She's such a nice foil to everyone!

Shadow seems like the type of guy where if anyone said anything mean to Cream, he would hunt them down

It’s woefully unfortunate, criminal even, that there is zero on-screen interaction with Shadow and Cream. I feel that there is a LOT of potential for character development for both characters simply because their beliefs, ideals, morals and passions are all diametrically opposed from each other. Not to say that Cream and Shadow will be natural enemies (as sonic already fills that role), but rather that opposites attract. Cream is a character whose heart is pure light. Shadow, by his very nature, is pure darkness. Cream sees the goodness in everyone, including Dr. Eggman. Shadow notices every character’s personality flaws has severe trust issues and refuses to let anyone in, even his ride or die, Rouge. I think Cream’s personality resonates with Maria’s. I’d love to see Shadow play a “big brother” role for Cream and watch over her, protect her, steer her away from curiosities that might get her into harm, etc. In turn, Cream’s purity and light will heal Shadow’s wounds and insecurities.

Rouge: You can't just tell! Of bloody course you can't tell a child how to end someone... You have to show how to, you dimwit! Some ultimate form you are... Edit: forgot /s. Just in case.

I love the relationship those two have. It's nice to see a pairing that's not romantic.

I had a dream recently about Shadow and Cream where there was some situation going down but whenever Shadow met up with Cream he would quiz her on math like he's been tutoring her for a while and wasn't going to let some new cataclysmic event stop him from helping Cream with her math and also threw in some sort of math joke about Sonic being too slow.
