The latest updates on CanineHybrid's Shadow Lugia costume project.
It has taken a total of 9 work days and perhaps as much as 70 hours or more to get to this point. As of yesterday, the foaming stage is completely finished! This is certainly the most involved fursuit project I've ever worked on, but I feel that all my hard work has already paid off it's exactly how I wanted it to look.
All that's left to do now is order all the fabric next month to cover this sucker; it will be a micro plush fur to keep the shiny effect yet has a bit of stretch to it. And its so soft! I'm so excited! I hope you are too. Enjoy the presentation!
Features: LED eyes, moving Jaw, oversized wings, six foot long tail, digitigrade padding, clawed feet, custom fit bodysuit, foam based design.
This costume is created for a legendary Pokemon cosplay group to be attending A-kon 22, Nan Desu Kan, and Animeland Wasabi. Other participants: Starmuttani as Rayquaza, Rektheartist as Groudon, and DragaLegna03 as Kyogre. Groudon is also created by CanineHybrid.

I put a layer of 1/2 inch foam over it usually, or I only carve into one side of the foam sheet (the inside), leaving the smooth edge to be on the outside. You can also smooth it out with thin sheets of foamies (closed cell foam) or even fabric. Glad you're enjoying my videos! :D

She used high density foam (green foam). She uses it in all of her cosplays on here. High density foam is also the best foam to use for cosplays because it's sturdy and doesn't mold very quickly. Hope that helped :3

It's absolutely AMAZING so far. Everything is perfect and you've kept it so well proportioned to your body to still look right for Lugia's body shape! I cannot wait to see this finished, I am truly excited to see how the attaching of the fabric goes! Also? My favourite part of this so far as to be the wings. I really want some of those for myself XD
@CanineHybrid
@CanineHybrid 14 лет назад
@TalonShredder Thanks so much! The tail is simply made with polyfil stuffing except for the foam-based tube at the base of the spine. I rolled a thick piece of foam to form a tube that fits inside the top of the tail. I attached a few cascading foam pieces as seen in the tail structure picture and glued them securely to the diveskin. I added an extra, thinner foam tube to act as a smooth transition between foam structure and the stuffing. CONT

@DarkDragonessKagome Thank you for your compliments! And no, I don't mind questions at all. The tail fabric is made from flannel and lightly stuffed with normal poly-fill stuffing. The secret lies in the foam structure: it's because it has such a strong anchor point to the base of the spine, it creates a point of reference for all the movement to flow from.

@GrayStudios Yes! The purpose of a duct tape dummy is is preserve and replicate the surface area of an object perfectly. It's like making a clone of myself so I can work on it as if I was wearing it. Very helpful to determine perfect-fit costumes; I use the same tape method around my foam structures to make fabric patterns.

@spinningpeanut Thanks so much for checking out my work! I do not have a video of me putting on masks on this channel, however you can see me suiting up in my completed Charizard costume on my old channel "Tusami". @Vixpine Heheh, well happy to help you with that! I cannot even count the number of times I've had to explain the mechanics of the moving jaw (which is why it'll be my next tutorial so I won't ever have to do it again! XD) The wings are a bit cumbersome, but totally fun to flap around in. Fits like a glove ^^

What did you stuff the tail with? The movement is absolutely lifelike and I can't imagine that being from regular pillow or plushie filling. It is too light to be pellets. Maybe it has something to do with the fabric? Ahhhhh. Could you give us some help on how you made the tail?
@CanineHybrid
@CanineHybrid 8 лет назад
+Amalie L Honestly it is completely stuffed with normal polyfil inside a flannel sleeve. The "secret" lies in the base of the tail and its length- there is a foam cylinder at the top where it is firmly attached to my body to give it some support and create a very responsive anchor point when I move around for all the movement to flow from. This doesn't work if the tail is too short either as the fabrics often constrain the movement too much, but the length/weight pulls on it more and makes it more flexible.
@amaliel2191
@amaliel2191 8 лет назад
I ended up trying precisely that and it turned out great! The tail is almost as long as I am tall, which really allows it to flow and bend. ^^ I am going to attempt making Heliolisk as soon as I am done with my Charmeleon costume for a con later this year. Thank you for your help and for being an awesome inspiration! :D

'tis absolutely amazing! I haven't been able to attend your recent broadcasts because I've been too busy. I can now see what I've been missing! And that tail... woah. How the heck did you do that? @TwistedAcrylics No worries, a common question. Duct tape is very useful for pattern making. It duplicates the surface area of your object. The purpose of my duct tape dummy body was to make a clone of myself so while I was working on the costume, I could guarantee it would fit me perfectly. It's a flawless homemade mannequin. I wore pajama sweats and my friends applied the duct tape over that. Then they carefully cut through both the duct tape and the pajamas to remove it.

@CanineHybrid
@CanineHybrid 14 лет назад
@iPitafish Thanks a bunch! That was one of my concerns too since I didn't end up sewing them into the seam like I originally planned. When the final fabric covers them I might stitch them on for extra support... but I glued the hell out of it and it surprisingly stays on very well. In fact just now I TIRED to rip them off. No luck at all, I can drag the whole bodysuit around by one of the fins. I think the glue bonded with the stiff felt and tail fabric a little too well, fused them together XD

@wildstar25 Ductape is very useful for pattern making: it duplicates the surface area of your object when you cut it off. Therefore you can transfer the pattern of the ductape into a fabric skin used to wrap around your objects perfectly. The purpose of my duct tape dummy body, for example, was to make a clone of myself so I could work on the costume as if I was wearing it. This way I make sure everything fits correctly. Hope that answers your question ^^

@CanineHybrid
@CanineHybrid 14 лет назад
@dragonsissiy Wow, thanks so much for all your wonderful comments! Yes, the vision in the Shadow Lugia costume is extremely poor. Since I wanted to keep faithful to the character's proportions, I had to sacrifice my vision/convenience of wearing the mask for the appearance/presentation aspect. I can still see through the red film of the eyes if I look far into the corners of my eyes (somewhat straining after awhile). If I want to look forward, I turn my head to the side or look out my open mouth

@shaggygriffon Thanks so much Shaggy! :D The approval of a dragon is quite a compliment. And ugggh those wings took FOREVER to carve. The eyes are made from cheap little LED headlamps (for hiking, camping, biking) from Wal-Mart.
@CanineHybrid
@CanineHybrid 14 лет назад
@Paludik Thanks so much! You're missing out on all the Ustream fun XD Somehow I got the tail to perform beautifully! It's normal poly-fill stuffing. The secret is in the foam tube structure I attached at the top: because it has such a strong anchor point to the base of the spine, it creates a point of reference for all the movement to flow from. I have not seen this duplicated/attempted yet and it's my most proud accomplishment! I'll be doing Groudon's hands next broadcast, hope to see you there
@CanineHybrid
@CanineHybrid 14 лет назад
@TalonShredder I put a bit more stuffing in the foam tube part before skillfully shoving the tail onto the foam base. The thin foam tube slid in-between the fabric and the stuffing inside of the tail (that was the most difficult part) and then I hot-glued the HELL out of it when I pushed the foam structure into the tail as much as I could. Also added an additional piece of foam that wraps from the foam base between my legs and attaches to the front for additional support. CONT

@dragonsissiy More comment, Also you did an amazing jobs on the wings and tail. Just perfect. Whenever I look at stuffed animals, drawings, costumes, etc I look for well made body structure. Maybe I'm just a perfectionist but still. XD Also what kills me is how you make the head of your costumes alive, just because you can actually talk with it! XD
@CanineHybrid
@CanineHybrid 14 лет назад
Thank you all for your kind comments! Too many to reply to them all, so I'll address the two most common questions: -I have almost no vision, I look through the mouth and rely on handlers at conventions. -The tail is made with nothing more than flannel and normal polyfill stuffing, no armature. The secret to the movement is the foam tube at the top: it provides a secure anchor point for all the movement to flow outwards from. I'll explain it in detail in later videos. Thanks for watching!

@CanineHybrid
@CanineHybrid 14 лет назад
@Vixpine And yes vision is very poor in this mask... I sacrificed it for maintaining Lugia's head proportions. This costume is focused on its presentation rather than convenience of the wearer. So I can still look through the eyes (omg everything's red) but it can be rather straining to peer that far into the corner of my eye. To see forward, I either turn my head to the side and look through the costume's eyes or I open my mouth and look down through it. It's manageable.

@PikAchu193 Pajamas that I purchased at Wal-Mart :3 Long sleeved/pants. Actually I think they were sweats. You can use any type of clothing as long as it covers your arms and legs fully, has a standard neck (no v necks or anything), and you don't mind cutting it up and ruining it for good.
@CanineHybrid
@CanineHybrid 14 лет назад
@ToboeTheWolf21 Oh! Haha, THAT's what you meant. I was only including the friends in my immediate cosplay group... simply because there are still many other Pokemon costumers attending A-kon (in addition to you guys) and it would be hard to mention them ALL. The other main reason is because I've directly worked on ALL of the additional costumes I mentioned in the list. I've probably spent the most on Kyogre, probably over 12 hours XD. I'll be sure to mention you guys in my A-kon video though ;)
@CanineHybrid

@RedSnow100 Thanks a bunch! :3 Hooray, your first fursuit. Good luck to you with that. Short fur will work fine, that's what we used for Eevee. Also my Leafeon's fur is short. If you had long fur, you'd have to shave it down on the head anyhow so this simply saves you a step. You just won't get to have long fluff anywhere (like on the cheeks).

@CanineHybrid
@CanineHybrid 14 лет назад
@kitaru0kun Yeah, I built this thing to last! The most difficult part to worry about breakage for this project, hands down, is the tail attaching to the suit. That one was insanely tough to figure out. I've made sure that sucker's not going anywhere ;p Wings are a bit fragile on the upper arm/shoulders where it's the thinnest. That's ripped a few times. Nothing a little hot glue can't fix!
@CanineHybrid
@CanineHybrid 13 лет назад

@CanineHybrid That is such a great idea! I'm gonna have to use this. Also, I might try a similar method for making mannequin heads for mask building and wig making. Obviously it will be a little different, I'll probably tape it in halves, but it seems like it would work.
@CanineHybrid
@CanineHybrid 14 лет назад
@wyv3rn1 The purpose of a duct tape dummy is is preserve and replicate the surface area of an object perfectly so it can then be converted into the perfect homemade mannequin. Leotards will stretch to fit your form, sure, but when they're not on your body it's a useless pile of cloth. Stuffing the leotard would also not work because you can easily fill it to be smaller or larger than your actual body size. The duct tape provides a absolute point in volume so you know how much to fill it.
@CanineHybrid
@CanineHybrid 14 лет назад
@KuroNoKiri I'm glad you picked up on that; I really strived for sticking with the concept design and proportions closest as I possibly could! ^^ And yes, there are uploads of the other group member's costumes!
