This game was AMAZING back in the day. The reviewer is clueless. When this game was released nobody had ever heard of a dark souls game and I'm pretty sure this game came first, the voice acting was great in this game and the game was truly creepy with a great ambiance. One of the most memorable games of that era

Exactly. Comparing it to the newer games was the dumbest argument. For being one of the early Metroid-like 3D games, it is still pretty great and the new controls make the game still hold pretty well. The reviewer has no clue.

I agree that it's cool for the fans who grew up playing the game, alongside a bunch of cut content, a few quality of life changes and such, but I'm not really concerned whether a review backfires or not @christopher medina As reviewers, we're merely offering our thoughts/opinions on a game. So if the audience does/doesn't align or agree with those views, then that's completely fine. Everyone can speak their mind on our videos - in fact, we encourage it - but as soon as the conversation descends into insults, accusations, vulgarity and the like, that's where we draw the line. As we want to keep this channel as welcoming/approachable as possible. It is cool to know that there's a thriving community for Shadow Man out there though, and I really respect that - Anthony

Soul Reaver Legacy of Kain came out a little earlier than Shadowman and has similar playable elements of metroidvania.

@@TheBetaNetwork i played demo version in 1999, after that i finish pc and PlayStation version two times, after 21 years Shadowman (and Heretic 2) is one of my best favorite game

I only wanted a couple more refinements here and there, specifically moving in first-person whilst shooting 😁 But besides that, not much else. The main problem I have with Shadow Man is it's overall gameplay structure. Although, since the formula's from the original release, I obviously can't expect much in that department from the remaster. Thing is, I played the original when it first came out, but I still wasn't a big fan of it back then. I see what you mean. This game has a lot of quiet, slower moments to help break up the pace. So it definitely isn't for everyone. I remember enjoying Shadow Man when it first came out, and I was very intrigued with the setting/lore of the game, as well as the 3rd person shooting mechanics. @@TheBetaNetwork Being a fan who played it on every single console (n64, dreamcast, PC and even the dreaded ps1) I am thoroughly enjoying it, the graphics are just a little shine above the PC steam version, better shadows and lighting but thats it. they didnt replace the wonky movements of the character models but i always found it a little eerie at the time which added to the horror atmosphere. Like old school stick figure stop motion stuff. The thing that caught me offguard the most about this is how much new content, levels and surprises are in it. And they plan on adding more bosses in the updates comin up so im really psyched.

I remember playing it back then too, but it still didn't hold my interest ahah 😅 I 100% agree with all the points in your second paragraph though! I really like the foundations of this game, just think it needed more time in the oven 😊

Although I didn't experience the game during the time it was release, I really enjoyed the remaster. Pretty much guessed the review will be like that the moment the reviewer uses the word "cringe".

Yeah, alll those weird interruption short videos of some random bystander people talking some nonsense pasted onto review is extremely weird. Might be a new trend in Western video making. Yup, and besides my PC version from 1999 looked/looks like the so-called remastered 2019 version, all vibrant colours and stuff. No improvement here at all. The dude here, merely rendered a low-res with dulled colours and marked it as „1999”.

@@TheBetaNetwork The Controls are fine much better than the original and the lighting effects are gorgeous in my opinion and of course I'm kinda biased for this game because I played this while I was kid and Nightdive did a fantastic job remastering this underrated gem. The level design is great as well.

@Joseph Nash Absolutely fair enough mate! It's definitely a game that has been beloved by a dedicated fan base. The tough thing is here, that it really is a title that is driven by nostalgia. So those who haven't experienced this all those years ago, will have a much harder time getting into this title. It's good to see that there is such a dedicated fan base backing this title though! More games need that! :)

Redd Pepper's voice suits Michael perfectly (I really like how does the narrations) and a fair bit of the overall VO is solid. Although a lot of the vocal direction and inflections simply miss the mark, and it's really noticeable at times. - Anthony

@Chade Fallstar That's the entire point of this remake. The original vision for the game, minus the technical limitations they encountered along the way. It's also designed to be how people remember the game, rather than how the game actually was. When smaller studios start getting too creative with remasters, you end up with GTA: Definitive Edition.

would cost a fortune for just a niche title to do like what they did with crash/spyro. They did a pretty decent job overall, got it looking like a HD playstation 3 quality with alot of improvements and restorations

That's completely fair! This video has definitely shown us what a strong fanbase Shadow Man has, and that's great! I really couldn't get into it, but it's good to see that many love it.

When I review older games, I try and put myself into that time-frame's mindset. And I'd be subconsciously comparing/contrasting it to other titles of that era. Furthermore, I can't expect games from 1999 to have the same level of polish as something like DMC, that released 2 years later. Or Nier, which arrived more than a decade later. - Anthony

It does have its audience for sure. And like you said, the foundation is there but Shadow Man just needed more time to flesh out and refine it's ideas - Anthony

@@TheBetaNetwork For its time it just felt huge, so twisted and Hellish. The background music and sounds,the weird New Orleans type art work! I loved it and after a while i didnt even mind the clunky controls at all!

I think this game deserves a proper remake rather than a remaster though, as I believe they could turn it into something special.

@@TheBetaNetwork sorry i fast foward every one first minute in every video, and you mention (now that i see it again(, that is n64. a very bad version, the best are pc and dreamcast, and pc was release the same time that n64, On the contrary, you analyze both as if both were current, and although they could have chosen to put more current controls, that's how it was played and many fans would play it again. the control is not bad, it is just old. your video is not bad, but it does not take into account certain things when analyzing an old game

The game is old, that's true. But if you look at several releases that came out in 1999, their controls were heaps better than this. They added other modernizations like the weapon wheel in the Remaster, so why not update the controls for an even smoother experience?

Maybe I will say like that. If this game look like The evil within 2. End everything else will stay like it was plus some dlc or level with Marco Cruz will be rebuilt , this game can score 8/10. Similar feeling I have with the new FF7 , now is just different game not a remake. Remember that back in 2000 people play Syphon filter and Tomb raider, the graphic was similar.

@@ariels9161 if this game looked like evil within 2 I'd give it a 9.5/10 and yes the ff7 remake was trash it had none of the strategizing that was needed in the original and none of the sense of discovery. Ff7 looks great but the gameplay sucks in comparison

@@TheBetaNetwork The Game Feels Worse than the original i can be so close to having the joystick dead north but Michael will decide he want's to jump sideways something about the remaster feels off they've definately tweaked the movement and enemy spawns i swear i do 1 thing and 5+ enemies spawn around me the game feels annoying to play not gonna lie hope the fix a few things

I didn't notice that actually, but it's probably because my PC controller is slightly busted 😅 That would be annoying though! And that adjective applies to the rest of the game too - I just wasn't having fun with it, and I normally stray on the more positive side for review scores 😬

@@TheBetaNetwork I was into the weird games. This one, nightmare creatures, body harvest. When I would go game shopping I would specifically look for the smaller titles that were interesting to me. I had a handful of games back then that my friends had never heard of before but I don’t remember what they all are it’s been a long time. Now I’m 40 and I just ordered a Retroid pocket 2+ and I’m hoping I can figure out how to get it to work and find the rooms for my old classic games

Yeah, I really had to push myself to get through the game, not gonna lie 😅 I forgot about that Alice game - boy, was that different hahaha!
