A little over a year into my current campaign, and we're more excited to play each and every session. It does feel D&D-like in many ways but it's also definitely simpler to navigate in terms of character mechanics. The thing that sets it apart for me is the atmosphere of the world and the theme of the Demon Lord Cometh.
SotDL is a fantastic system! More people should try it as it has a lot of great elements from other TTRPGs and excellent mechanics. Boons and Banes are less swingy, and therefore better than Advantage/Disadvantage, character creation is simple but has depth because of professions and "interesting things", it's easy to teach and learn and you can play with just the Corebook or add as many supplements as you like ( it is well supported on Drive-thru RPG). Highly Recommend. 😈
The lore is INCREDIBLY edgy at times, but the mechanics? The core of the game? *Chef's kiss* Schwalb also does an amazing job of constantly reminding the reader: you can use this (lore/mechanic/etc.), or toss it in the bin and make up your own "x" thing.
SotDL is such a fun game, i so love my goblin chef that takes a bite of every living thing he kills and killed 100 diseased rats! The Initiative system is also a cool part of the game!
@@ThatPrettyBMF Players doing an action or move go first, then NPC's doing an action or move, then Players doing an action and move , then NPC's doing an action and move! The players can choose the order of themselves on their part of the round.
Love the character creation and path system of this game💯🔥. The magic is also just amazing and flavourful and will mess up your whole day (or the enemies) while not undermining the martials who are also absolute beasts! Very limited number bloat as well💭.
This is working for my Discord game , a group notorious for shelving campaigns and resetting with new systems. EZ mechanics for Theater of Mind style play.
Great game book and world setting. I misread the initial rules and ran a 63 session campaign that took a year and a half to reach it's conclusion. I slowed down progression so the players could absorb the setting and really soak up the apocalyptic feel of the end of the world. By the time it was over I think my players had PTSD. Thank you Schwalb!
Love this game. I love coming across videos promoting it. My group and I switched from 5e about three years ago and haven't looked back! Keep your eyes peeled for Rob's "Shadow of the Weird Wizard," a more, ah, family friendly version of the game.
SotDL has been my go to since I discovered it. I found 5e to be very unsatisfying and underwhelming and SotDL definitely wasn’t either of those for me. My only gripe is the somewhat limit accessories in print.
Sounds like an interesting system. I’m not sure about the levelling up after each session as most group’s notoriously waste a lot time. It feels like a good system to match with Darkest Dungeon
