to answer the first part, given OP's wording, it seems they have liked this ship since they were young, up until now that they're 33. to my knowledge, many fans of the pairings i mentioned above are also adults. secondly, i believe it's not new info that shadow is cryogenically frozen for that timeframe, making him mentally a teenager. for example, aang from avatar is not 112, he is 12, but frozen for a hundred years. does this clarify it?

I'm not necessarily a huge follower of this ship, per say. Regardless, I do full heartedly believe that Shadow has a soft spot for Amy. She reminds him of Maria. Maria was full of life and love, just like Amy is. Shadow would do anything to protect that. Even do something as stupid as attending a boy band concert with her. If it would make her happy, he'd do it.
