Deena Dau It's pretty clear he uses it as a defense mechanism though. After he was tortured in 2x12, he was all peacocked out in 2x13 but claimed he was just bored, and in the morning scene in 2x15, he magics on makeup when Alec walks into the room. It's very much a shield.

Deena Dau But that's not what Matt meant, he means when he's "peacocking" as a way to hide. This is clearly something Magnus has done many times in his life. He doesn't mean in general, but there was also something said by someone last year, I don't remember who, that the reason Magnus had so many different looks in s1 was because he was trying to appeal to Alec (basically peacocking) and that's why his wardrobe became more neutral in season 2. Obviously it's still more fashionable than everyone else, but it's scaled down because he doesn't feel like he has to anymore.

You have a point. I think Matt meant "peacocking" in compare to Magnus's standard, and not Alec's. Lol

I think that peacocking was not only the glitter and all but also the way he was all about partying, drinking and being flirty. Yes, it's part of who he really is but at the same time I also think it's a defence mechanism. In season 1 and in season 2B I feel that Magnus was concerned in not showing Alec his most vulnerable side ("ugly side" as he called it on episode 2x15) and trying to please Alec. The more the relationship develops and they trust each other, his walls start to come down and even though he still is fashionable and all that, it's a little more toned down. Also he's not so over the top when he speaks.
