Fatshe leso lea halalela[The land of our ancestors is holy]
Fatshe leso lea halalela
Shadowland
The leaves have fallen
This shadowed land
This was our home
The river's dry
The ground has broken
So I must go
Now I must go
And where the journey may lead me
Let your prayers be my guide
I cannot stay here, my family
But I'll remember my pride
PridelandI have no choice
My landI will find my way
Tear-stainedLea halalela
Dry land
Take thisTake this prayer
With youWhat lies out there
Fatshe lesoLea halalela
And where the journey may lead you
Let this prayer be your guide
Though it may take you so far away
Always remember your pride
Fatshe leso lea halalela
Fatshe leso lea halalelaFatshe leso lea halalela
And where the journey may lead you
Let this prayer be your guide
Though it may take you so far away
Always remember your pride
And where the journey may lead youGiza buyabo, giza buyabo
Let this prayer be your guideI will return, I will return
Beso bo
Though it may take you so far awayGiza buyabo, I will return
Always remember your prideGiza buyabo, oh giza buyabo
Beso bo, my people, beso bo

My favorite part about this song is that an instrumental version of the main melody is part of the original movie's soundtrack. The lyrics add so much more to the song's meaning, and every time I listen to it I get chills. Disney composers are geniuses.

Most of Disney's Broadway shows do that. I noticed it first with Beauty and the Beast...the beginning of "No Matter What" was a variation on a melody that shows up in the instrumental soundtrack of the movie.

I think this song actually highlights something very poignant about the whole plot. The Lionesses, from the moment Scar took control of the Pridelands, have been through absolute hell. Forced to overhunt, abused and neglected, enduring endless cruelty and misery for years on end. Nala has grown up in it, and it has stripped away the happy care-free cub she once was. When Nala decides to leave, to find help, to the other lionesses she is their last hope, their hero, daring to go off and do what all of them wish they could. This song captures that feeling so perfectly! Almost makes me a little annoyed that Simba just kind-of "shows up" at the end and gets all the credit XD
@Sparkles-gp2bm
@Sparkles-gp2bm 5 лет назад
Donovan94 that’s how it is for most prides. Although the females hunt, the males are first to eat. The males main goal for the pride is to keep reproducing and to protect the pride from other enemies. So it kinda falls in line when Simba comes back to overthrow Scar because in reality there will always be another Lion to come and overtake the pride.

@joshuagavile4775 4 года назад
Donovan94 although I completely agree with your point on the crisis the lionesses endured under the leadership of Scar and the role Nala played in their salvation, I wish you hadn’t added that last sentence about Simba. Since he’s the protagonist of the story, we as the viewers have the responsibility of investing our hearts in him and celebrating his glory, regardless of the circumstances. Besides, it’s not like Simba didn’t undergo any challenges. Despite the false guilt & fear he was feeling, he ultimately decided to do the just thing by fulfilling his father’s will and claiming his birthright, risking his life in the process. Also, let’s not pretend Nala didn’t get her due. She became queen and mother to an heir, which is an indescribable honor, far more than one could ever dream of. There is no flaw in how the ending was written. Since Simba is the protagonist and the titular character, we can’t complain about him getting a good portion of the spotlight & praise. If someone other than him were to be sung as the hero, it would be a relative of his. His family tree moved the story.
@donovan9456
@donovan9456 4 года назад
@@joshuagavile4775 I never said the ending was flawed. I never implied the movie was "bad" for following its own narrative. I perfectly understand how this is Simba's story so it stands to reason that he is the hero. I know Simba went through a lot of heartache and change as a character. My last sentence was intended to be a joke.

something about the cadence of how they sing the word “faraway” summons a deep melancholic longing within me. i don’t even know how to describe it. it’s mourning and lonely. you can feel the lionesses imagining all the unreachable places Nala could be heading to, that she might never return from. so faraway…

For some reason, this song reminds me of refuges. When she says “shadowland, this was our home” it reflects the place called home that people lose through the world, “the rivers dry, the ground has broken” it represents people who don’t have any recourse to live and have to move to live, “I cannot stay here my family, but I will remember my pride” it represents the people who have to leave their family or their home to find more opportunities to help themselves and their families, “I will return (take you some far away, always remember your pride)” it represents the people who return always to their families but have to keep going forward on another place to help them... that is my opinion. Sorry for my bad English 😒

It's a shame that when they were filming a new scene for the special edition of The Lion King, they couldn't have put in this one. Or "Endless Night". Or "He Lives In You." Instead, they went with "The Morning Report"...nice, but nothing more than a cute throwaway. According to Jim Hill, that's because they wanted a scene that could be easily put in and taken out without having to re-animate or re-touch any already existing scenes.

This is definitely my favourite song in the musical. Saw the Sydney production a couple of months ago and I've listened to the soundtrack pretty much every day since. I absolutely loved every minute of it. Will make sure to see the musical again when the production comes down to Melbourne next year.

This musical was the very first I saw live. I saw it last summer in London during a school trip and I was so excited. The set was amazing, the costumes as well, the actors were phenomenal and this was one of the songs that hit me so hard. I wish I could go see it again. To be honest, I don't think I can enjoy the movie as much as I did the musical. I will just miss the extra songs such as they live in you and shadowland.

We all know that if Beyoncé sang this as Nala in the remake, it would have been a showstopper and easily the sole reason to even see it in the first place. Why Disney never went for it is beyond me.

My school’s doing the Lion King Jr and I got cast in the play. The whole cast came together early on to listen to the whole soundtrack and this is basically everyone’s favorite.
@theawesomebat1244
@theawesomebat1244 5 лет назад
There’s a scene in the Lion King (2019) where Nala is escaping Pride Rock and leaves to find help. This remake felt too short and I think they should’ve added ‘Shadowland’ right after she runs away from Scar with Sarabi and the Lionesses singing. This and new elements would’ve made this remake less short.
