it is crazy fun and the modding community is adding new gods and mechanics all the time and the creator put access to the mods right there in the main menu :) just remember difficulty is set by map size the larger you set the map the more world you have to corrupt
One thing I think is neat about this game is that before you enter the game, a hundred turns are simulated. This is why different degrees of effects/modifiers already exist in provinces, and why there are already wars taking place. It uses something aproximating a history generator to allow you to enter a living world in media res, with a plethora of existing levers to choose from, very special!

One of my favorite strategy games, up there with the Dominions series. Not enough games let you play as the bad guy like this. Excellent review, as well. I appreciate you going into your own gameplay scenario, that kind of thing is great for showing people how the game is actually played in practice.
the first few play through's all i did was make a dark empire ...it wasn't until i started to explore other mechanics did it really open up as a super repayable game for me Building an orc empire is super fun as you have a large degree of control over how you expand building spell twister camps to support your warlords. Starting deep one cults are wild as they are super vulnerable as first but get out of hand real quick if you protect them until they mature. Ruins out in the wilderness have unique artifacts and equipment that you can trap and lure in heroes to their death or take the goods for yourself. you can seal a queens hand mirror and leave it in the bed of a rival king making both kings go to war .....you can sell poisoned health potions to hero's to make them off them selves in combat you can start civil wars beggar entire nations ...or you can drive rulers so insane they dance naked in the street covered in the blood of their closest supporters only to have the family of those supporters declare a blood feud and watch as the two family's start killing each other making the feud deepen ..... or you can delve into magics and summon hordes of undead, trigger a volcano, turn half the map into an uninhabitable frozen tundra, turn the nobility of a nation into vampires that have to feed on their people ....to name just a few of the things you can do
Neat, this game reminds me a lot of Dominions, where you play as a god competing against other gods to convert the world to your religion. Having to end the world is a novel twist on that, like a Lovecraftian Pandemic/Plague Inc.
I found this game exceptionally slow and dull very fast. Making my own dark empire was fun the first time, but it quickly became the only thing I really do and I ended dropping the game soon after.
I know what you mean, there are definitely limits to it's replayability. I try really focusing on one of the mechanics in each playthrough, recently did primarily Deep Ones and I enjoyed that a lot more than doing dark empire again.
Not enough games let you play as an international conspirator like this. I get that it can get politically incorrect really fast, but it works here because you are playing as a Lovecraftian evil with no plausible deniability lol I absolutely LOVE the general diversity of motivations between characters and nations. Nobody is fully motivated to fight evil until it is too late, it makes things feel less artificial that the heroes dont just generically want to stop you. Alot of strategy games have the issue of the AI being biased against the player. Instead the player is privileged with tons of information and can see on the granular level what makes every leader tick, its amazing!
