His performance is quite unique. He uses A LOT of vibrato in very short notes and joins very gently the passages that are usually more interrupted, even by JdP and Rostropovich. 7:19 is impressive!
Thank you very much for posting this recording of Daniil Shafran! Program : Dvorak Cello Concerto in B minor, Op. 104, B. 191 Cellist : Daniil B. Shafran --- Conductor : Carlo-María Giulini I. Allegro 0:00 II. Adagio 16:33 III. Finale 28:48
I have been looking for a cellist to consider one of the greats like Rostropovich, and there really is no one else.... besides him. Shafran. THAT is masterful playing. No one else can play this concerto with such control. Many have tried, and failed. They may be able to play it, but they do not have a mastery of it.
There is a video of Carlo Maria Giulini in the end of 1977 (this was 78) conducting Dvorak concerto with different orchestra, and Rostropovich. It is interesting to hear both, since they were so different but equally amazing.
@@petrhamersky2295 Rostropovich is a soviet cello player. Shafran is a russian cello player. One follows a great cultural tradition - russian - the other one follows a horrible criminal death regime tradition. I can not explain it better, sorry
This is a wonderful video to see on youtube. Giulini's slightly slower tempos, which the maestro is well known for, here unfortunately rob the concerto of it's Czech rhythms, energy and lilt. At times the Vienna symphony are a little to suave for Dvorak's energetic Cello Concerto. Tonally accurate to be certain, but the slow tempo may not work for everyone. Shafran is marvellous. More modern recordings suit the concerto a little better.
