Craig really bears his soul there at the end of the second interview when he talks about running. He clearly sees a kindred spirit and is smitten with her, but because of the age difference and inappropriateness of it, plays it off as fatherly concern. For a girl of her age and generation, she is so smart, articulate, and an amazing personality, it's hard not to smitten with her.
I will disagree. He was innuendo free for two interviews and was relentlessly "patron"-ising in a pleasant way. I found his tenor genuinely respectful.
I think he really does. Usually he's flirting up a storm every single interview, but he was so reserved. I honestly think he was a little shy, I don't think that he was very... confident, even. He reminded me so much of one of my friends who does the exact same thing because of his personality, but is super reserved around certain people.
SW: "You got great socks" Craig: "They're tights." SW: "Long johns or tights?" Craig: "They're tights. I wear them for skiing." SW: "Skiing and talk shows." Craig: "I don't know - things go downhill pretty fast around here." His throwaway jokes are better than anything I've ever come up with.
That "it goes downhill" retort was pure genius...and got almost no response. My god, the man is untouchable by today's standards. Seriously. He most definitely feels a very clear connection with her in these interviews, too...he lets his guard down a few times and stops worrying about being funny. What an excellent human being Craig is.
I noticed that too. It’s so subtly clever that nobody got it in the moment. What a brilliant mind, one of the only people alive who kept up with Robin Williams and Russell Brand.
I gotta say, I'm from Brazil and unfortunately we don't have american talk shows around here, but I'm watching a lot of them on youtube and Craig is by far the most amazing host I've ever seen. That's how a talk show should be!
This is the most touching of Craig interviews I've seen to this moment. And also the lady, she connects with the genuine side of you. She is so lovely and respectable.
Craig sensed her innocence and youth and as sympatico as they are, instinctively dropped into a protective mentor role, rather than being his usual flirtatious self. Those sorts of instincts are part of what made him amazing. I miss this show...
I love this interview. Craig respects her as an intellectual equal, and at the end of their second interview he truly shares something personal with her. I think maybe he senses the peril she is in by her tightrope walk with success and wishes her to avoid the same evils that he went through. Shailene is a lovely, amazingly perceptive human.
Two things about this guest. 1) he never flirted. No creepy "it puts the lotion in the basket". Nothing. Pretty cool. 2) everything he said in the second interview about pure artists losing themselves and being non-snooty is exactly how he was being. One of the purest interviews he's done.
I get the sense Craig really saw elements of himself in Shailene and seemed to be trying to share his wisdom and warn her about the industry, I think this is one of my favourite of his interviews.
“I ran so I could feel completely exhausted, so now I can’t panic.” Wow! That was an unexpected, rare look into Craig’s psyche, also completely relatable.
7:15 It's so beautiful what Craig does here. I have seen lots of his interviews and he is genuine, down to Earth, but, this, this is something else. He is really giving from his heart advice for an young talented person. You can tell he is really concerned. I never saw that before anywhere. He does not need to do that, just crack jokes, but, wow, what an amazing human being. And she felt his love, his concern, his feelings... Around 11:00 he confirms what I just said.
She officially entered one of the best guests ever territory when she pulled out the matching smoking pipe. Also, hearing Craig talk about running was really interesting. As a fellow runner myself, I really agree with him about the running as a search for grace and just exhausting your body to the breaking point. It doesn't feel great at first, in fact as he says it is really painful... actual pain during the hard parts, but then you endure it and your body recovers and like she said, you feel as if you have really accomplished something.
Stephen Mason -- Absolutely!! The pipe was brilliant, intelligent, playful, and p.e.r.f.e.c.t. Her timing (waiting for Craig to go first) and then not overplaying it...she came prepared and it was a beautiful thing to witness...Craig was genuinely surprised, too (imho). I want to also agree with you about the "best guests ever territory" -- these two interviews are so unique and so heartfelt (I've watched MANY @TheJaylenoFly videos) NOT ONE other video is like it! And there are other videos on this channel that are unique, too (Desmond Tutu, Michael Caine, more) but NONE that are so sincere in conversation and comments. As I watched this video, I knew in real time that I was watching something completely different than ever before in a guest's interview(s) and I really liked it. And I wouldn't hesitate to place this at video #1 - Craig is SO transparent, SO open / honest, and SO caring it shows a side of him he never let guests really see on his show, but did it so naturally with Shailene Woodley that a casual watcher may have even missed it. Craig may be in the flirting master class, but he let his audience see his heart unzipped in these interviews...and Shailene brought it out. Thank you @TheJaylenoFly for posting this and all your efforts in this channel. They are very much appreciated.
@Stephen Mason: the pipe was a truly clever and entertaining move on her part. So these two interviews didn’t go down well with...the viewers? He was respectful and a gentleman as far as his behaviour went. I guess that a lot of his viewers like to watch for the eye-candy and were disappointed that these two appearances failed to result in the heavy flirting that’s often playfully gone on during Craig's shows & even then...well they’re adults on late night TV. I certainly miss watching this show. Thanks very much for sharing your comment.

I´ve seen a lot of Craig vids (thanks for all those uploads, by the way) and this is really touching. He cares for her, for sure. And they could take off the double meanings and jokes from the show and just having a chat about whatever; he can open himself without sarcasm.
Craig is something of a national treasure I believe he's got a very well informed interview style that can't be replicated, I was even left with an endearing smile after his interviews with Paris Hilton but this, Gold!
She's the king of girl that you always want to date and bring home to the parents. I'd marry her just to listen to her voice everyday. lovely personality!
THIS is Craig being genuinely intersted in somone. With other actresses and actors,he only genuinely lets them get about halfway through a story or thought before he has derailed with some dirty joke. While this is hella funny, I think that is Craig showing that he is bored with the conversation, so he is trying to get a kick out of their reaction. This is not universal with every dirty joke or every other guest, but it does seem to be a trend. With Shailene however, they finish their thoughts, and build on eachothers perspectives, like two people who really understand eachother will do. He is truly interested, (as he reiterates many times), and wants to understand her better. The only other guest I can think of whom he showed a similar conversation style with is Morgan Freeman.
I disagree. Her body language, and how she reacts to him are a sign disinterest to me. Why this interview works is because Craig is a confident interviewer and Shailene is a well-behaved, articulate girl, but I don't see any special chemistry here.
@@electrizer what you see is not what most people see...not disrespecting with your opinion...but thats the way it is...unless you are a body language analyst.
I feel like Craig sees Sailene as like his daughter all grown up like what she would be like when she grew up and the intelligence she shows now and what she would be like in her future. He doesn’t flirt or talk dirty to Sailene he’s just genuinely interested in her and her future
Craig could see that the 'sharks' of Hollywood hadn't had a chance to get at, or manipulate her to suit their money grabbing ways, and he really genuinely seemed to be trying to help her from becoming just another 'Young Thing' to be thrown away when she stopped making money for them. In fact I think I can say he was a totally different person in those two interviews with her from all the others I have ever seen him do in all his long time doing that show. It was almost as if he was being like a 'show-business father figure' and trying to protect her from all the 'pitfalls' that he knew only too well could happen to someone like her in their line of work.
When you have seen as much of life in the 'show biz' world as Craig has and what it can do to you, - and I think he has tried and done most things from what he says in his shows. Luckily for him he managed to 'pull' himself back from the edge just in time, - mind you it cost him several marriages in the process. Maybe he saw the 'red light' just in time - who knows ? - I think in this 'girl' (who isn't stupid by any means) he can see someone who is not in the usual 'Hollywood Mould' and it intrigues him to actually find someone who comes over as being a lot older than her years. It would be interesting to know if they have kept in touch after Craig's time on this show finished.
One of his best guest ever. I think they made an actual intellectual connection. You can tell he respects her and sees real potential in her; that's why he didn't drop into his flit schitck.
thats because she didn't come out in a tight revealing dress that many of the women "celebrities" wear on the show, so if they don't look like a bimbo, he doesn't treat them as one. She dress's just like a normal girl going out to do things, not the general hollywood actress's outfits. Some other cute guests that dress like normal people with nice conversations, like Ellen Page, etc.
I wouldn't cal it "filth shtick" but rather fun double entendres . She just had a different vibe is all. No better, no worse than any other guest, just different.
Anne Mander because she does have a great personality she can be interested in intellectual conversation meanwhile the other female celebrities are not so flitting is away of making them having fun I think this applies for people in general if the person is interesting and intelligent you would engage with them in interesting things
i agree, she is one of the most real down to earth people in hollywood i think, and i have a mad crush on her especailly when she got arrested at standing rock, that just made it for me ;) and i wish he would come back and do his show again,, i was soo bummed when he retired
Craig is one of the most intelligent, thoughtful, and genuine entertainers working today. If you haven't, check out him memoir, American on Purpose. It's one of the best autobiographies that I've ever read. Very inspiring.
I completely agree. I think that if CBS hadn't fucked over Craig and given him The Late Show when Letterman retired, like Craig totally deserved, she would go down as one of Craig's most beloved guests, right there next to people like Bell or Kunis.
@@blairbrown4812 Nope, the reasons he wasn't metoo'd because he is not on the air and the fact he NEVER did anything wrong anyway. And if anybody tried to smear his name he would have either made them look ridiculous or just told them to FU...(toootsy fruitsy)off.
I've watched a lot of Craig's interviews with beautiful women (thanks The Jayleno Fly). In many of them he seems to need something from them...to impress them, to captivate them, to win them over, to master them...these two interviews are different. Here it seems he needs to give something...to advise, to impart, to inspire. It's a beautiful exchange. There is something noble and tender and dear here. Maybe...a search for grace.
This is rather amazing. Something that is an oddly specific moment that feels universally relatable. That moment you fear where the inevitable day arrives of the perfect storm when your brain breaks, you laugh inexplicably with no context or rationale and all with the misplaced, but resigned sense of comfort that you are now mad as a hatter.
One of the best interviews he gave and it’s obvious he is actually interested in her and offered her a great compliment compared her to Meryl Streep towards the end. The audience here seem to laugh at inappropriate times suggesting they didn’t get the connection in that last interview. You can actually see her swell up with tears in the last couple of minutes
Jayleno Fly. I never got to watch this show because I worked nights for many years. I must say thank you for all the effort you've put into these. From your videos I've come really admire and respect Craig Ferguson. Thank for everything you put into these.
She is the most precious actress. I love her with short hair. Very chilled attitude and very beautiful. Craig is blessed to meet such amazing beautiful women. Some of the most cherished ppl in the world.
Wow, I could watch Shailene Woodley in that red dress with the sound off and still be deliriously happy. But she's really together, totally real and funny too. Loved her in Snowden. Great actress. Thank you for sharing.
I have the feeling that if they where somewhat the same age they would hook up right away, you can see that she is kinda smitten with him and it's not just him having a crush on her.
i admire Craig for how he listens to the other person's response and questions em back on something they said . gotta say talk show hosts really really never do that yet he's so patient and a good listener that makes the guest so much more comfortable rather than just hitting them with the questions you've got prepared
she's so gorgeous, but absolutely more beautiful because of how serene, so balanced her personality is. such a great conversationalist, too, not so much for talking but for listening patiently and sincerely. terrific person.
I really like shailene and them two together. They look like real good friends. She feels so likeable and unusual for hollywood. I would also feel protective of her like craig obviously did here :) golden moments. They care for eachother
If you really notice, Craig always welcome young new talents in studio as if they're big stars. Even if they were coming to promote indie movies etc., Craig made them exciting. Which is important because those little-known projects were sometimes personal to the guests. That's the heart of his Late Show.
When Greg gets serious @ 14:27, that's the best part of the video. You can tell that he is genuinely impressed with her and the conversation they are having. I never really knew much about her before but she's does seem like a very interesting person to have a conversation with. I just love the moments when Craig gets serious and has a genuine connection with the people he cares about.
Absolutely fell in love with this young lady when this originally aired thanks to Craig's unabashed endorsement of her true character; if they're good enough for Craig, they're good enough for me!
It is always great when Craig had a guest on that he really enjoyed speaking with. He was always professional, but it was great to see him vibe with a guest! It was the thing that really differentiated him with the rest of the herd.
@@RGZ112 I mean do you hear yourself dude? You can really tell about a person's orientation by watching them on TV or in a stadium? If it comes to be true, you must be a genuine!
@@marvinjazzhands251 I know you Macho football fans don't want to accept it, but Aaron has been in the closet for many years now. He's had a falling out with his family over it. All of these high profile relationships that he has with women are totally fake. Just ask his ex boyfriend Kevin. I'm sorry you can't accept that
Are those divergent movies any good? Do you enjoy them? I saw a good deal at the store for 4 of them together for like 5 bucks or something and wasn't sure if I should buy them or not. As I have not seen any of those movies and I don't know if they are actually entertaining for someone like me.
Shailene is so adorable! She seems so sweet and grounded! Her voice and laughter remind me of Jennifer Lawrence, the way she talks and laughs is similar and so very cute! 😍😍😍❤️❤️❤️
Dude! I am in love with Shailene now! Liked her movies a good bit, the action ones, but now i am in love! She is cool as hell, seems grounded and has her life balanced so well. That young lady will continue to be successful for a long time in my opinion! Good for her. Just love her smile and her confidence, and her uncertainty at times. She’s not afraid to be human!
@@ChrisJ-mf7cj Yeah I think she actually produced _Adrift_ as well and she has good taste in filmmakers because it’s a romantic survival drama done just right. The sinking boat sequences are really quite tense indeed. 👍🏽
I don't think there's any denying Craig's charm and wit, but this interview he came across as vulnerable and willing to concede some control of the conversation. What an interesting interview.
Craig almost bares his soul at 27:02 and 28:47 is one of the rare moments in this show. He must saw something in this young lady to respond like that. Fascinating interviews.
The phrase "normal" is really one that is not easy to define for a person. But for this young actress, it seems very appropriate to call her seemingly "normal". In the world of Hollywood, she is so humble, well spoken, intelligent, at ease, and a delight. And I am an old guy. I appreciate that kind of young person whether they are in the entertainment industry or not.
I believe she's an old soul and Craig also had seen it and she had totally disarmed him and they were both real and at ease and comfortable and intelligent conversations ensued
Second interview. Man, i think Craig hit the nail on the head. She is bound for greatness, and I think she will move on from acting too. I mean, she already has in so many ways.
One of my most favorite guests, such a sweet and naturally beautiful thats for sure. Craig did a fantastic job with this interview, way more calmer then he used to be, I liked that for a change👌🏽
At the time of this interview Craig had two sons, one was 3 and the other 14. I think he stepped outside of his normal creepy role and let his concern for young actors take over the interview. A lifetime in the entertainment industry leaves a good person afraid of what might happen to young people, especially if his children might become entertainers. Craig didn't seem smitten to me. I think he was hopeful. He hoped that young people would not put all their dreams in the basket of stardom and get skills that give them another way to earn a living.
If the show had gone on longer I think she would have been one of the guests that had tons of appearances on the show. I think these might have been two of the most genuine talk show appearances I've ever seen. Craig didn't even try to make some innuendo when she mentioned she needs meat. And I don't even think he held back from making it, I kind of think it just didn't even occur to him for once. I mean they joked around with each other, but the whole thing really just felt like a natural good conversation between two people. Very cool.
Did you all notice this is kind the first time he actually endorsed the guesst to promote its movie? that was like he actually showed interest/he cared.
She is someone who I have admired for ages. She seems like she has an old soul and has this uniqueness about her, which i would love to know more. So much love to my fello Scorpio babe.
Wow! Never watched these interviews before, so interesting. Craig was in a completely different frequency with her, specially in the second interview. He looks genuinely fond of her in a non-flirtatious way, giving advice and asking personal (non-creepy) questions. Only goes to show again what a fantastic conversationalist he is. Very inspiring
Craig is not only personable and funny, but he notices things women LOVE to talk about, shoes, clothes, hair, hands ... Chicks dig all that. Why the chicks dig him and find him attractive.
It’s not just tricks and tropes - he tries to meet people where they are and be genuinely interested in what they’re interested in. So for instance Alice Eve is Oxbridge educated and so he had a pretty high level conversation about philosophy with her.
It's too bad the first interview wasn't until 2014. I think they both genuinely enjoyed the conversations and each other's personalities. I would love to have seen a few more years of interviews.
