My biggest problem with the Taming of the Shrew is it's probably the toughest to follow of all his comedies. All the switching of identities may not be so bad if all of the names didn't soudn the same! Too many names, most ending in "-io" and if that's not bad enough, some of them switch identities and take on aliases. So the tutor Cambio is really Tranio disguised as Lucentio, or is it Lucentio disguised as Gremio who switched places with Grimio and pretending to be Grumpy-O and Sneezy-O? I'm losing track of who's courting whom and who's plotting with who. Very complex plot for a comedy.

I’ve watched the Elizabeth Taylor/Richard Burton movie more times than I can remember, beautiful costumes and sets. In it, Taylor takes her situation in hand and cleans up Petrucio’s house and act. A little touch of feminism. Also, she can withhold sex. A woman’s secret power. It’s a really fun romp.

Thank you our prompt was to write about masking and identity as one of the characters from the piece. This was so much better than though 3 min summaries. So grateful!

it was a play for the low classes in London as pure entertainment. it was by no means philosophy. just spoofing the attitudes of the day. I cant believe academics read so much into light romantic comedy. imagine in four hundred years space balls will be a philosophical historical document

"Was he in fact, believing that his Schwartz was as big as the other man's, or was he just projecting his insecurities around the ship? A 500-word essay due tomorrow. Remember class, character analysis! What was Barf REALLY feeling when he and Lone Star were on the ship, alone?"

And why would Gremio present Lucentio/Tranio as a tutor for Bianca, if he knows that he's a rival for Bianca's hand? That part never made sense.
@Nancenotes
@Nancenotes 11 месяцев назад
He doesn’t know he’s a rival. He just thinks he hired a tutor to get in favor with Bianca’s dad. He’s not clever enough to circumvent the father and win the girl like everyone else.

Would you consider Katharina a sinner of wrath according to the seven deadly sins that Shakespeare usually includes in his works?

I hadn’t done classifications that way before. But yes, she could easily be associated with wrath.

That's the way marriages worked in the 16th century, for better or worse. I always find it dangerous to compare social mores of 500 years ago by 21st century standards.
@davidtravis306
@davidtravis306 2 года назад
the only danger is in assuming that we're so different than they were. the fact is that this tale is timeless for a reason because it provokes the thought, and even though most people nowadays aren't as brash as Petruchio, we can see echoes of his behavior throughout society. It's all relevant, even if drenched in 16th century slapstick comedy.
@tomservo75
@tomservo75 11 месяцев назад
@@davidtravis306 But I've always assumed that Petruchio's behavior was considered over the line even for Shakespeare's time, and for this reason the play was always intended as a farce

This is such a strange play. I as a man felt pride for Petrucio in how he was able to get his wife to be more kind through his stern ways but at the same time, I wouldn’t want a man like that even for my strongest will daughter. I love the final speech but even that shouldn’t be mean that my daughter is a doormat. Thanks for this explanation.

Came here for analysis not a summary.

Okay. On the other hand, the title of the video includes the word summary and not the word analysis, right? So it would be a little disingenuous for this to have been the video you were hoping for.
